A Stick Which may be Grabbed on Either Side: Sino-Hellenic Studies in the Mirror of Comparative Philosophy
Recently, Jeremy Tanner has published a highly informative review article in the Journal of Hellenic Studies, in which he introduces and advertises "Sino-Hellenic Studies” as a new and upcoming subfield in academic inquiry. Tanner particularly focuses on what he terms "Sino-Hellenic comparative philosophy,” while developing his perspective clearly from within contemporary Classicists' academic parameters. In this paper, I approach the matter precisely from the other end, i.e. from within contemporary comparative philosophy, distinguishing four different approaches in comparative philosophy, pointing out some pitfalls in comparison and offering a perhaps provocative conclusion by provincializing and politicizing "Sino-Hellenic Studies”. The paper not only seeks to supplement Tanner's review, but also and more importantly to introduce some fundamental methodological problems to be dealt with in any comparative inquir
On Wang Hui's re-imagination of Asia and Europe
For roughly two decades now, WANG HUI has been a prominent voice within academic, cultural and political discourses in China, but increasingly also in Europe and the United States. WANG's still developing oeuvre might be understood as an attempt to 'provincialize Europe' (DIPESH CHAKRABARTY) from a political perspective and by drawing on historical and present-day China. In this article, the main focus is on one specifi c aspect in this attempt, namely WANG's view of Europe, and I shall investigate that aspect on the basis of an article by WANG on the concept of Asia: "The Politics of Imagining Asia" (2007). I fi rst discuss WANG's genealogical analysis of Asia as a “European concept” before attending to what he perceives as derivations of it in Asia itself. I then engage with WANG's proposal to go beyond the framework of nation-state/ empire, and argue that he fails to offer an attractive re-imagination of the concept of Asia. When fi nally turning to his view of Europe, I shall issue a criticism of some misplaced anti-Eurocentrism in his work on the conceptual level.
Development of Accreditation Standards for Commercial Recreation Curricula
The basis of the accreditation process is measuring current content against formal guidelines or standards. This study used a Delphi technique to explore the important content areas to be incorporated into an academic program. This is on exploratory effort because there has been little research done in this area
Erotic positions for two consenting males : considerations for a gay painting practise : an exegesis presented with exhibition as fulfillment of the requirements for thesis Master of Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand
This exegesis is an exploration into painting and gay visual culture, and investigates what might constitute
a "gay painting practise". It discusses my focus on the work of American photographer Bob Mizer and Physique
Pictorial as source material for painting and the questions it raises regarding queer histories, gay sexuality
and camp sensibilities. It considers the idea of queer utopian memory as a framework of looking back to moments
of "sexual possibility" in order to transmit and receive utopian visions across intergenerational divides. It
also considers gay sexuality, its ability to reimagine and restructure notions of intimacy, and its role in
resisting gay assimilationist narratives.
Drawing on the writings of various queer theorists, this exegesis considers how colour, form and content may
contribute to a queer aesthetic. Making the argument for camp as a style of relating to things, I aim to
situate my painting practise as a "gay painting practise" through a network of gay associations, affiliations
and references
Microsporidial Infections in Immunodeficient and Immunocompetent Patients
Microsporidia are obligate, intracellular, spore-forming protozoal parasites. Their host range is extensive and includes most invertebrates and all classes of vertebrates. Five microsporidial genera (Enterocytozoon, Encephalitozoon, Septata, Pleistophom, and Nosema) and unclassified microsporidia have been associated with human disease, which appears to manifest primarily in immunocompromised persons. The clinical manifestations of microsporidiosis are diverse and include intestinal, pulmonary, ocular, muscular, and renal disease. The majority of microsporidial infections in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are attributed to Enterocytozoon bieneusi, an important cause of chronic diarrhea and wasting. Four cases of microsporidial infection among persons not infected with HIV who had documented or presumed cellular immunodeficiency and four cases of corneal stroma infection due to microsporidia in immunocompetent patients have been described. Furthermore, the first case of traveler's diarrhea due to E. bieneusi in an immunocompetent and otherwise healthy patient is reported in this issue. The sources of human microsporidial infections and modes of transmission are unknow
