    The integrin heterodimer CD11b/CD18 (alpha M beta 2, Mac-1, CR3) expressed on monocytes or polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) is a receptor for iC3b, fibrinogen, heparin, and for intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 on endothelium, crucially contributing to vascular cell interactions in inflammation and atherosclerosis. In this report, we summarize our findings on the effects of lipid mediators and lipid-lowering drugs. Exposure of endothelial cells to oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) induces upregulation of ICAM-1 and increases adhesion of monocytic cells expressing Mac-1. Inhibition experiments show that monocytes use distinct ligands, i.e. ICAM-1 and heparan sulfate proteoglycans for adhesion to oxLDL-treated endothelium. An albumin-transferable oxLDL activity is inhibited by the antioxidant pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), while 8-epi-prostaglandin F2 alpha (8-epi-PGF2 alpha) or lysophosphatidylcholine had no effect, implicating yet unidentified radicals. Sequential adhesive! and signaling events lead to the firm adhesion of rolling PMN on activated and adherent platelets, which may occupy areas of endothelial denudation. Shear resistant arrest of PMN on thrombin-stimulated platelets in flow conditions requires distinct regions of Mac-1, involving its interactions with fibrinogen bound to platelet alpha llb beta 3, and with other platelet ligands. Both arrest and adhesion strengthening under flow are stimulated by platelet-activating factor and leukotriene B4, but not by the chemokine receptor CXCR2. We tested whether Mac-1-dependent monocyte adhesiveness is affected by inhibitors of hydroxy-methylglutaryl-Coenzyme A reductase (statins) which improve morbidity and survival of patients with coronary heart disease. As compared to controls, adhesion of isolated monocytes to endothelium ex vivo was increased in patients with hypercholesterolemia. Treatment with statins decreased total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol plasma levels, surface expression of Mac-1, and resulted in a dramatic reduction of Mac,mediated monocyte adhesion to endothelium. The inhibition of monocyte adhesion was reversed by mevalonate but not LDL in vitro,indicating that isoprenoid precursors are crucial for adhesiveness of Mac-1. Such effects may crucially contribute to the clinical benefit of statins, independent of cholesterol-lowering, and may represent a paradigm for novel, anti-inflammatory mechanisms of action by this class of drugs

    Evidence of Two Distinct Dynamic Critical Exponents in Connection with Vortex Physics

    The dynamic critical exponent zz is determined from numerical simulations for the three-dimensional (3D) lattice Coulomb gas (LCG) and the 3D XY models with relaxational dynamics. It is suggested that the dynamics is characterized by two distinct dynamic critical indices z0z_0 and zz related to the divergence of the relaxation time τ\tau by τξz0\tau\propto \xi^{z_0} and τkz\tau\propto k^{-z}, where ξ\xi is the correlation length and kk the wavevector. The values determined are z01.5z_0\approx 1.5 and z1z\approx 1 for the 3D LCG and z01.5z_0\approx 1.5 and z2z\approx 2 for the 3D XY model. It is argued that the nonlinear IVIV exponent relates to z0z_0, whereas the usual Hohenberg-Halperin classification relates to zz. Possible implications for the interpretation of experiments are pointed out. Comparisons with other existing results are discussed.Comment: to appear in PR

    Detection of a period decrease in NN Ser with ULTRACAM: evidence for strong magnetic braking or an unseen companion?

    We present results of high time resolution photometry of the eclipsing pre-cataclysmic variable NN Ser. We observed 13 primary eclipses of NN Ser using the high-speed CCD camera ULTRACAM and derived times of mid-eclipse, from fitting of light curve models, with uncertainties as low as 0.06 s. The observed rates of period change appear difficult to reconcile with any models of orbital period change. If the observed period change reflects an angular momentum loss, the average loss rate is consistent with the loss rates (via magnetic stellar wind braking) used in standard models of close binary evolution, which were derived from observations of much more massive cool stars. Observations of low-mass stars such as NN Ser's secondary predict rates of ~100 times lower than we observe. We show that magnetic activity-driven changes in the quadrupole moment of the secondary star (Applegate, 1992) fail to explain the period change by an order of magnitude on energetic grounds, but that a light travel time effect caused by the presence of a third body in a long (~ decades) orbit around the binary could account for the observed changes in the timings of NN Ser's mid-eclipses. We conclude that we have either observed a genuine angular momentum loss for NN Ser, in which case our observations pose serious difficulties for the theory of close binary evolution, or we have detected a previously unseen low-mass companion to the binary.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures.     Scaling behavior in the β\beta-relaxation regime of a supercooled Lennard-Jones mixture

    We report the results of a molecular dynamics simulation of a supercooled binary Lennard-Jones mixture. By plotting the self intermediate scattering functions vs. rescaled time, we find a master curve in the β\beta-relaxation regime. This master curve can be fitted well by a power-law for almost three decades in rescaled time and the scaling time, or relaxation time, has a power-law dependence on temperature. Thus the predictions of mode-coupling-theory on the existence of a von Schweidler law are found to hold for this system; moreover, the exponents in these two power-laws are very close to satisfying the exponent relationship predicted by the mode-coupling-theory. At low temperatures, the diffusion constants also show a power-law behavior with the same critical temperature. However, the exponent for diffusion differs from that of the relaxation time, a result that is in disagreement with the theory.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex, four postscript figures available on request, MZ-Physics-10

    A novel, aerosol-nanocrystal floating-gate device for non-volatile memory applications

    This paper describes the fabrication, and structural and electrical characterization of a new, aerosol-nanocrystal floating-gate FET, aimed at non-volatile memory (NVM) applications. This aerosol-nanocrystal NVM device features program/erase characteristics comparable to conventional stacked gate NVM devices, excellent endurance (>l0^5 P/E cycles), and long-term non-volatility in spite of a thin bottom oxide (55-60Å). In addition, a very simple fabrication process makes this aerosol-nanocrystal NVM device a potential candidate for low cost NVM applications

    Critical Dynamics of a Vortex Loop Model for the Superconducting Transition

    We calculate analytically the dynamic critical exponent zMCz_{MC} measured in Monte Carlo simulations for a vortex loop model of the superconducting transition, and account for the simulation results. In the weak screening limit, where magnetic fluctuations are neglected, the dynamic exponent is found to be zMC=3/2z_{MC} = 3/2. In the perfect screening limit, zMC=5/2z_{MC} = 5/2. We relate zMCz_{MC} to the actual value of zz observable in experiments and find that z2z \sim 2, consistent with some experimental results

    Exact Calculation of the Vortex-Antivortex Interaction Energy in the Anisotropic 3D XY-model

    We have developed an exact method to calculate the vortex-antivortex interaction energy in the anisotropic 3D-XY model. For this calculation, dual transformation which is already known for the 2D XY-model was extended. We found an explicit form of this interaction energy as a function of the anisotropic ratio and the separation rr between the vortex and antivortex located on the same layer. The form of interaction energy is lnr\ln r at the small rr limi t but is proportional to rr at the opposite limit. This form of interaction energ y is consistent with the upper bound calculation using the variational method by Cataudella and Minnhagen.Comment: REVTeX 12 pages, In print for publication in Phys.     Outlying HII Regions in HI-Selected Galaxies

    We present results from the first systematic search for outlying HII regions, as part of a sample of 96 emission-line point sources (referred to as ELdots - emission-line dots) derived from the NOAO Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG). Our automated ELdot-finder searches SINGG narrow-band and continuum images for high equivalent width point sources outside the optical radius of the target galaxy (> 2 X r25 in the R-band). Follow-up longslit spectroscopy and deep GALEX images (exposure time > 1000 s) distinguish outlying HII regions from background galaxies whose strong emission lines ([OIII], Hbeta or [OII]) have been redshifted into the SINGG bandpass. We find that these deep GALEX images can serve as a substitute for spectroscopic follow-up because outlying HII regions separate cleanly from background galaxies in color-color space. We identify seven SINGG systems with outlying massive star formation that span a large range in Halpha luminosities corresponding to a few O stars in the most nearby cases, and unresolved dwarf satellite companion galaxies in the most distant cases. Six of these seven systems feature galaxies with nearby companions or interacting galaxies. Furthermore, our results indicate that some outlying HII regions are linked to the extended-UV disks discovered by GALEX, representing emission from the most massive O stars among a more abundant population of lower mass (or older) star clusters. The overall frequency of outlying HII regions in this sample of gas-rich galaxies is 8 - 11% when we correct for background emission-line galaxy contamination (~75% of ELdots).Comment: 20 pages, 14 Figures, Accepted by A
