    Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Personality: Their Relationship to Collegiate Alcohol Abuse

    This study serves to examine the effects Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and personality have on alcohol-related consequences in collegiate students. To investigate these relationships, a survey was distributed to Butler University students via their daily email listserv, and 101 students’ responses were recorded. Using multiple regression analyses, no relationship was found between an individual’s degree of experienced FoMO and alcohol related consequences; however, neuroticism was found to be strongly correlated with FoMO. Additionally, extroversion inversely predicted more alcohol-related consequences, and Greek affiliation was found to be a significant predictor of one’s consequences as well

    Validity of energy expenditure for the Garmin Vivofit during a week of physical activity

    Purpose To determine the accuracy of energy expenditure measured by the Garmin Vivofit during a 7 day period of daily living in comparison to a research grade accelerometer, Actigraph. Methods Participants wore a research grade accelerometer (Actigraph GT3X+) and a Garmin Vivofit device for 7 straight days, 24 hours a day. Paired t-tests were used to examine mean differences in 7-day mean energy expenditure and step values obtained between the devices, as well as the mean energy expenditure values for each day. Pearson correlation was used to assess the relationship of energy expenditure between the devices. Statistical significance was set a priori at p \u3c 0.05. Results There was no significant difference between the Actigraph and the Vivofit for mean total daily energy expenditure. The Vivofit reported a significantly lower mean daily active energy expenditure (271.13 vs 513.02 kcals, for Vivofit vs. Actigraph, respectively, p \u3c 0.001). The Vivofit reported significantly higher mean daily step averages (13,412.00 vs. 11,307.58, for Vivofit vs. Actigraph, respectively, p = 0.01). Paired t-test analysis of mean active kilocalories concluded a significance difference on all 7 days between the devices. There was no significant difference between the devices for mean total kilocalories for any day. Pearson correlations were highly significant between the devices for both total and active kilocalories (r = 0.99, p \u3c 0.001). Conclusion The Vivofit total energy expenditure results matched expected results of having no significant difference between the devices. Active energy expenditure and step results were unexpected with the Vivofit underestimating daily active energy expenditure and overestimating daily step averages as compared to the Actigraph.     The neural correlates of emotion regulation by implementation intentions

    Several studies have investigated the neural basis of effortful emotion regulation (ER) but the neural basis of automatic ER has been less comprehensively explored. The present study investigated the neural basis of automatic ER supported by ‘implementation intentions’. 40 healthy participants underwent fMRI while viewing emotion-eliciting images and used either a previously-taught effortful ER strategy, in the form of a goal intention (e.g., try to take a detached perspective), or a more automatic ER strategy, in the form of an implementation intention (e.g., “If I see something disgusting, then I will think these are just pixels on the screen!”), to regulate their emotional response. Whereas goal intention ER strategies were associated with activation of brain areas previously reported to be involved in effortful ER (including dorsolateral prefrontal cortex), ER strategies based on an implementation intention strategy were associated with activation of right inferior frontal gyrus and ventro-parietal cortex, which may reflect the attentional control processes automatically captured by the cue for action contained within the implementation intention. Goal intentions were also associated with less effective modulation of left amygdala, supporting the increased efficacy of ER under implementation intention instructions, which showed coupling of orbitofrontal cortex and amygdala. The findings support previous behavioural studies in suggesting that forming an implementation intention enables people to enact goal-directed responses with less effort and more efficiency

    Educating for Indigenous health equity: An international consensus statement

    The determinants of health inequities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations include factors amenable to medical education’s influence, for example, the competence of the medical workforce to provide effective and equitable care to Indigenous populations. Medical education institutions have an important role to play in eliminating these inequities. However, there is evidence that medical education is not adequately fulfilling this role, and in fact may be complicit in perpetuating inequities. This article seeks to examine the factors underpinning medical education’s role in Indigenous health inequity, in order to inform interventions to address these factors. The authors developed a consensus statement that synthesizes evidence from research, evaluation, and the collective experience of an international research collaboration including experts in Indigenous medical education. The statement describes foundational processes that limit Indigenous health development in medical education and articulates key principles that can be applied at multiple levels to advance Indigenous health equity. The authors recognize colonization, racism, and privilege as fundamental determinants of Indigenous health that are also deeply embedded in Western medical education. In order to contribute effectively to Indigenous health development, medical education institutions must engage in decolonization processes and address racism and privilege at curricular and institutional levels. Indigenous health curricula must be formalized and comprehensive, and must be consistently reinforced in all educational environments. Institutions’ responsibilities extend to advocacy for health system and broader societal reform to reduce and eliminate health inequities. These activities must be adequately resourced and underpinned by investment in infrastructure and Indigenous leadership

    Submillimetre Constraints on Hyper-Extremely Red Objects in the Subaru Deep Field

    We have mapped the submillimetre wavelength continuum emission from the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) at 450 and 850 microns with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) detector on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The near-IR image of the SDF is one of the deepest near-IR images available and contains four `hyper extremely red objects' (HEROs). These data allow us to test the connection between `extremely red objects' (EROs) found in IR surveys and the population of bright submillimetre sources found with SCUBA. We present a weak measurement of the average flux of the four K-band selected HEROs of 1.15 (+/-0.46) mJy, which fails to support the hypothesis that HEROs should be bright SCUBA sources. Our data are consistent with the HEROs being objects with SEDs like that of Arp220 out to z~1.7, however, the extinction in the HEROs must be about 1 magnitude greater in the J-band than is the case for Arp220 and they would need to be 1.7 times as luminous as Arp220. On the other hand, an evolutionary model of elliptical galaxies at z~2-3 in a dusty starburst phase is also in agreement with the submillimetre data, as was originally proposed for the HEROs.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS July 5th, 200

    Individuals with ASD show differences in face processing abilities from early in development. To examine whether these differences reflect an atypical versus delayed developmental trajectory, neural responses to familiar and unfamiliar faces in 24 18-to 47-month-old children with ASD were compared to responses of 32 12- to 30-month-old typically developing children. Results of two experiments revealed that neural responses to faces in children with ASD resembled those observed in younger typically developing children, suggesting delayed development. Electrophysiological responses to faces were also related to parent-report of adaptive social behaviors for both children with ASD and typical development. Slower development of the face processing system in ASD may be related to reduced self-directed ‘expected’ experience with faces in early development

    Haemophilus ducreyi Cutaneous Ulcer Strains Are Nearly Identical to Class I Genital Ulcer Strains

    BACKGROUND: Although cutaneous ulcers (CU) in the tropics is frequently attributed to Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue, the causative agent of yaws, Haemophilus ducreyi has emerged as a major cause of CU in yaws-endemic regions of the South Pacific islands and Africa. H. ducreyi is generally susceptible to macrolides, but CU strains persist after mass drug administration of azithromycin for yaws or trachoma. H. ducreyi also causes genital ulcers (GU) and was thought to be exclusively transmitted by microabrasions that occur during sex. In human volunteers, the GU strain 35000HP does not infect intact skin; wounds are required to initiate infection. These data led to several questions: Are CU strains a new variant of H. ducreyi or did they evolve from GU strains? Do CU strains contain additional genes that could allow them to infect intact skin? Are CU strains susceptible to azithromycin? METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To address these questions, we performed whole-genome sequencing and antibiotic susceptibility testing of 5 CU strains obtained from Samoa and Vanuatu and 9 archived class I and class II GU strains. Except for single nucleotide polymorphisms, the CU strains were genetically almost identical to the class I strain 35000HP and had no additional genetic content. Phylogenetic analysis showed that class I and class II strains formed two separate clusters and CU strains evolved from class I strains. Class I strains diverged from class II strains ~1.95 million years ago (mya) and CU strains diverged from the class I strain 35000HP ~0.18 mya. CU and GU strains evolved under similar selection pressures. Like 35000HP, the CU strains were highly susceptible to antibiotics, including azithromycin. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These data suggest that CU strains are derivatives of class I strains that were not recognized until recently. These findings require confirmation by analysis of CU strains from other regions
