Responses of global waterbird populations to climate change vary with latitude
While climate change continues to present a major threat to global biodiversity and ecosystems, most research on climate change impacts do not have the resolution to detect changes in species abundance and are often limited to temperate ecosystems. This limits our understanding of global responses in species abundanceâa determinant of ecosystem function and servicesâto climate change including in the highly-biodiverse tropics. We address this knowledge gap by quantifying abundance responses to climate change in waterbirds, an indicator taxon of wetland biodiversity, at 6,822 sites between â55° and 64°. Using 1,303,651 count records since 1990 of 390 species, we show that with temperature increase, the abundance of species and populations decreased at lower latitudes, particularly in the tropics, but increased at higher latitudes. These contrasting responses to temperature increase according to latitude indicate potential global-scale poleward shifts of species abundance under climate change, providing empirical support for predictions by earlier studies. The negative responses to temperature increase in tropical species and populations are of conservation concern, as they are often also threatened by other anthropogenic factors. Our results suggest that existing biases in studies towards temperate regions could underestimate the impact of climate change on waterbirds and other species
Nxele, Ntsikana and the origins of the Xhosa religious reaction
The sudden expulsion of the Xhosa across the Fish River in 1811â12 created a practical and conceptual crisis which the traditional political authorities were unable to resolve. Two commoners, Nxele and Ntsikana, emerged in this vacuum, each proposing his own solution to the problems posed by the white irruption. Although these responses were religious responses, they were neither irrational nor incomprehensible. Xhosa religion had long functioned as an instrument for the control of the material world. By incorporating selected Christian concepts with the Xhosa world-view, Nxele and Ntsikana were able to provide the Xhosa with acceptable explanations of past events and prescriptions for future action. Nxele urged resistance and Ntsikana preached submission, but an examination of their personal histories shows that these final conclusions were more the product of exterior pressure than interior revelation. It may be suggested that the future reputations of the two men, like their past actions, will be determined more by the popular mood than by anything they themselves did or said

Motifs in bipartite ecological networks: uncovering indirect interactions
Indirect interactions play an essential role in governing population, community and coevolutionary dynamics across a diverse range of ecological communities. Such communities are widely represented as bipartite networks: graphs depicting interactions between two groups of species, such as plants and pollinators or hosts and parasites. For over thirty years, studies have used indices, such as connectance and species degree, to characterise the structure of these networks and the roles of their constituent species. However, compressing a complex network into a single metric necessarily discards large amounts of information about indirect interactions. Given the large literature demonstrating the importance and ubiquity of indirect effects, many studies of network structure are likely missing a substantial piece of the ecological puzzle. Here we use the emerging concept of bipartite motifs to outline a new framework for bipartite networks that incorporates indirect interactions. While this framework is a significant departure from the current way of thinking about bipartite ecological networks, we show that this shift is supported by analyses of simulated and empirical data. We use simulations to show how consideration of indirect interactions can highlight differences missed by the current index paradigm that may be ecologically important. We extend this finding to empirical plant-pollinator communities, showing how two bee species, with similar direct interactions, differ in how specialised their competitors are. These examples underscore the need to not rely solely on network- and species-level indices for characterising the structure of bipartite ecological networks

Here, the authors synthesise population trend data for ~2000 animal species to show that population trends cover a wide spectrum of change from losses to gains, which are not related to species rarity

Les psychotropes occupent le deuxiĂšme rang dans la consommation de mĂ©dicaments chez les personnes ĂągĂ©es. L'objectif de cette Ă©tude est de vĂ©rifier un modĂšle explicatif de la consommation de psychotropes dans cette population. Notre principale hypothĂšse est que la qualitĂ© des relations qu'entretient une personne ĂągĂ©e avec autrui, et particuliĂšrement avec ses enfants, a une influence directe sur son bien-ĂȘtre psychologique, lequel a une influence directe sur la non-consommation de psychotropes. Une enquĂȘte a Ă©tĂ© rĂ©alisĂ©e auprĂšs d'un Ă©chantillon de 500 personnes ĂągĂ©es de 65 Ă 84 ans, vivant Ă domicile. Au cours des trois mois prĂ©cĂ©dant l'entrevue, 31,8 % des rĂ©pondants ont consommĂ© des psychotropes. Les donnĂ©es empiriques n'ayant pas permis de vĂ©rifier le modĂšle thĂ©orique retenu, des analyses multivariĂ©es ont conduit Ă l'Ă©laboration d'un modĂšle explicatif de la consommation qui met en Ă©vidence que le bien-ĂȘtre psychologique et la santĂ© sont les meilleurs prĂ©dicteurs de cette consommation. Un bien-ĂȘtre psychologique Ă©levĂ© diminue la consommation alors qu'un mauvais Ă©tat de santĂ© l'augmente. Les relations sociales influencent directement le bien-ĂȘtre psychologique alors que les relations familiales ont un effet de moindre importance. Le modĂšle explicatif proposĂ© explique 13 % du phĂ©nomĂšne de la consommation de psychotropes chez les personnes ĂągĂ©es.Psychotropic drugs are the second most commonly used medication by Quebec's elderly. The objective of this study is to test a theoretical model of psychotropic drug use in the elderly. The principal hypothesis is that the quality of relationships the elderly person has with others, particularly with his or her children, has a direct influence on his or her psychological well-being, which, in turn, directly affects the consumption of psychotropic agents. A survey was conducted on a sample of 500 elderly people, aged 65-84 years, living at home. 31.8% of the respondents used psychotropic drugs during the three-month period preceding the interview. Path analysis led to the elaboration of a modified model for the consumption of psychotropic drugs by the elderly which indicates that the best predictors of consumption are both the psychological well-being and the state of health of the individual. More elevated is the psychological well-being, less is the consumption of psychotropic drugs, whereas poor health condition increases it. The quality of an individual's social relationships has a direct influence on his or her psychological well-being, whereas family relationships are of lesser importance. Our model accounts for 13% of the predictors of psychotropic consumption by the elderly
Raspodjela lindana u vodi, sedimentu i ribama iz rijeke Warri (Delta Nigera, Nigerija)
This paper is the first attempt to quantify the levels and the distribution pattern of lindane in the surface water, sediment and fish (Chrysichthys furcatus and Tilapia zilli). The samples were collected from three stations (Ovwian, Ekakpamre, and Ovu) of the Warri River in the western Niger Delta of Nigeria in 2006: during the dry (January-April) and wet seasons (May-August). The analysis included a total of 96 samples made up of 24 samples each for water, sediment, and fish. The pesticide levels were analysed using high performance liquid chromatography to elucidate its distribution in various environmental compartments. Residue levels in the matrices ranged from below the detection limit (BDL) to 1.37”g L-1 in water, BDL to 12.66 ”g g-1 dry weight (dw) in sediment, BDL to 16.67 ”g g-1dw in Chrysichthys furcatus, and BDL to 0.15 ”g g-1dw in Tilapia zilli .The observed values were above the ecological benchmarks (0.01 ”g L-1) recommended by the Nigerian Environmental Protection Agency and European Union. They were also relatively higher than in previous studies on the Nigerian environment, which calls for regular monitoring of the Niger Delta water bodies.IstraĆŸene su pojava i raspodjela lindana u povrĆĄinskoj vodi, sedimentu i dvije vrste riba Chrysichthys furcatus i Tilapia zilli iz rijeke Warri u zapadnom dijelu delte Nigera (Nigerija). Analizirano je ukupno 96 uzoraka: po 24 uzorka vode, sedimenta i riba. Razine pesticida odre|ene su primjenom tekuÄinske kromatografije visoke djelotvornosti (HPLC) te je utvr|ivana njihova raspodjela u razliÄitim dijelovima okoliĆĄa. Koncentracije rezidua u uzorcima vode bile su u rasponu: ispod granice detekcije (BDL) do 1,37 ”g L-1, u sedimentu: BDL do 12,66 ”g g-1 suhe tvari, u ribama Chrysichthys furcatus: BDL do 16,67 ”g g-1 suhe tvari te Tilapia zilli: BDL do 0,15 ”g g-1 suhe tvari. The Interactional bind of 'just [do X]'
This article examines the use of just-formulated advisings in ordinary, naturally occurring sequences of unsolicited advice giving when produced in response to troubles-tellings. Drawing on two examples from our broader collection, we demonstrate that such advisings are employed in response to advice resistance and function to minimize proposed courses of future action, attenuating their imposing nature. We show they place an interactional bind upon advice recipients that contributes toward further resistance. This article explicates this bind and its categorial, epistemic, and moral implications. Demographic History of Indigenous Populations in Mesoamerica Based on mtDNA Sequence Data
The genetic characterization of Native American groups provides insights into their history and demographic events. We sequenced the mitochondrial D-loop region (control region) of 520 samples from eight Mexican indigenous groups. In addition to an analysis of the genetic diversity, structure and genetic relationship between 28 Native American populations, we applied Bayesian skyline methodology for a deeper insight into the history of Mesoamerica. AMOVA tests applying cultural, linguistic and geographic criteria were performed. MDS plots showed a central cluster of Oaxaca and Maya populations, whereas those from the North and West were located on the periphery. Demographic reconstruction indicates higher values of the effective number of breeding females (Nef) in Central Mesoamerica during the Preclassic period, whereas this pattern moves toward the Classic period for groups in the North and West. Conversely, Nef minimum values are distributed either in the Lithic period (i.e. founder effects) or in recent periods (i.e. population declines). The Mesomerican regions showed differences in population fluctuation as indicated by the maximum Inter-Generational Rate (IGRmax): i) Center-South from the lithic period until the Preclassic; ii) West from the beginning of the Preclassic period until early Classic; iii) North characterized by a wide range of temporal variation from the Lithic to the Preclassic. Our findings are consistent with the genetic variations observed between central, South and Southeast Mesoamerica and the North-West region that are related to differences in genetic drift, structure, and temporal survival strategies (agriculture versus hunter-gathering, respectively). Interestingly, although the European contact had a major negative demographic impact, we detect a previous decline in Mesoamerica that had begun a few hundred years before
