Potentials of social media for tacit knowledge sharing amongst physicians : preliminary findings
Tacit knowledge sharing amongst physicians, such as the sharing of clinical experiences, skills, or know-how, or know-whom, is known to have a significant impact on the quality of medical diagnosis and decisions. This paper posits that social media can provide new opportunities for tacit knowledge sharing amongst physicians, and demonstrates this by presenting findings from a review of relevant literature and a survey conducted with physicians. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten physicians from around the world who were active users of social media. Initial thematic analysis revealed eight themes as potential contributions of social web tools to facilitate tacit knowledge flow amongst physicians. The emergent themes are defined, linked to the literature, and supported by instances of interview transcripts. Findings presented here are preliminary, and final results will be reported after accomplishing all phases of data collection and analysis
Towards promoting youth mental health in Aotearoa/New Zealand: Holistic "houses" of health
A study of the literature on mental health promotion suggests that to a far greater extent than ‘physical’ health concerns, mental health seems to be dominated by the illness focus of established clinical perspectives and practices. In Aotearoa/New Zealand this leaves little in the way of conceptual space or fiscal resources for the development of new preventative possibilities of population-oriented measures focussed on enhancing social and physical environments. Outflanking this unfortunate impasse, indigenous Maori and Samoan (Pacific) conceptual frameworks for health offer holistic theoretical foundations upon which we can work for health through positive development. This paper examines these frameworks and the youth development paradigm to draw out parameters of what might count as healthy youth development in this country

The isolation of useful bioproducts remaining from the large-scale fermentation of penicillium chrysogenum
Chitin, a homopolymer of ß-(1-4) linked N-acetyl D-glucosamine units, and its deacetylated derivative chitosan have unique properties that may allow their utilisation in a diverse array of high-value applications. Currently chitinous materials are commercially produced from the waste products of the seafood processing industry, this supply is seasonal and the extraction procedures required harsh, resulting in products with heterogeneous characteristics. In this work novel methods of extraction of chitinous material from the dry fungal biomass remaining from the large-scale fermentation of Penicillium chrysogenum in the penicillin manufacturing industry were investigated, with the aim of avoiding or minimising the harsh chemical treatments. This work was carried out in partnership with Angel Biotechnology, who produce penicillin commercially and provided the waste biomass. It was determined that the chitinous material present in this biomass was too intractable for this to be a suitable commercial source of chitin, as large quantities of non-chitinous polysaccharide impurities remained in the product. Attempted enzymatic degradations of the fungal cell wall did not increase the level of purity of the extract. Comparison to other fungal sources of chitinous material indicated that P. chrysogenum does not provide the most efficient source of chitinous material. During the course of these studies it became apparent that there is no agreed literature procedure for the determination of the degree of deacetylation (DDA) of chitinous material, this characteristic is essential in determining the physiochemical properties of the polymer. In reviewing the procedures available we concluded that (^15)N solid-state NMR offered the most reliable method, however, its use was limited by the low natural abundance of (^15)N. We therefore developed a novel, efficient and directed strategy for the (^15)N labelling of chitinous material in fungal cells walls. This allows the direct determination of the DDA of chitinous material in whole fungal cells without the need for lengthy extraction procedures. The whole cell CPMAS ssNMR techniques developed may find many applications, such as monitoring cell wall biogenesis in response to varying nutrient conditions. Additionally, this may allow the rapid screening of fungal species to determine the concentration and DDA of chitinous material
A grounded theory of reconstructing public sector audit
This thesis explores the effects of the transfer of English public sector audit contracts to private firms in 2012 as a result of the abolition of the Audit Commission. Financial audit is a key accountability mechanism over public spending, so changes in audit arrangements can affect the accountability of public sector entities. I use a constructivist grounded theory approach and 23 interviews with auditors and clients to research how the transfer has affected the financial audit of public sector entities.
I find that auditors and audit firms have reconstructed what it means to undertake a good quality audit in the UK public sector, in line with the firms’ commercial objectives. There is more emphasis on image and customer service, and less on public sector specialisation. Crucially, efficiency is incorporated into auditors’ understanding of audit quality, such that less work is necessary to do a good quality audit. I draw on Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic violence to demonstrate how the new meaning of audit is imposed and perpetuated.
This research explicates hitherto unexplored practical consequences of the change to public sector audit in England. This could be valuable to those making policy decisions in other jurisdictions of the UK (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), which still operate national audit institutions similar to the Audit Commission. More generally, it helps to explain how some New Public Management cost savings are achieved. It also adds to our theoretical understanding of how the dominant parties in the audit sector continue to extend their remit, and to define how audit works
Interview with Ms. Helen Watson – Dean of Women
Helen Linnemeier Watson came to Rollins College in 1956 as the Dean of Women. During her time with the College, Watson took a special interest in the quality of students\u27 on-campus living conditions.
Watson was born on December 11, 1911, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She earned her BA in psychology from Florida State College for Women [now FSU] and received her MA from Simmons College. Before coming to Rollins, Watson already had extensive job experience, including a series of posts at Webber College that culminated in her appointment as the college\u27s president.
While at Rollins College, Watson was heavily involved in sorority life and the residence halls. She suggested that washers and dryers be installed in the girls\u27 dorms and helped promote the idea that the campus should have a nighttime security guard. Watson was also a member of several organizations, including the National Association of Deans of Women, the National Education Association, and the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. In 1965, she was awarded the Rollins Decoration of Honor for her service to the institution.
Watson eventually became the Executive Director and Educational Consultant for the Collegiate Business Institute
A STUDY OF GENDER IN SENIOR CIVIL SERVICE POSITIONS IN IRELAND. ESRI RESEARCH SERIES NUMBER 66 DECEMBER 2017
Women make up the majority of those employed in the civil service but are underrepresented
at the most senior grades, where key policy and operational decisions
are taken. Action 8 of the Civil Service Renewal Plan commits to improving gender
balance at each level, including senior grades. The present study was
commissioned by a high-level steering group set up to oversee implementation of
this action. It draws on a combination of administrative data, reanalysis of the Civil
Service Employee Engagement Survey conducted in 2015, and in-depth work
history interviews with 50 senior civil servants across four departments. In
addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with staff involved in recruitment
and promotion within the public service. This rich combination of data yields new
insights into the processes shaping gender differences in representation at the
most senior grades of the civil service and thus provides a strong evidence base to
inform future policy and practice
Replacement of dichloromethane within chromatographic purification : a guide to alternative solvents
Replacement of dichloromethane as the bulk medium within chromatographic purification has been evaluated with a broad range of molecules containing functionality common within Medicinal Chemistry programmes. Analysis of the data set has generated a set of general guidelines to assist in the selection of alternative solvents for CH2Cl2 as the bulk media in these ubiquitously employed processes
