Modified electronic voice encoder /Vocoder/ includes an independent analog mode of operation in addition to the conventional digital mode. The Vocoder is a bandwidth compression equipment that permits voice transmission over channels, having only a fraction of the bandwidth required for conventional telephone-quality speech transmission
Metastable Cosmic Strings in Realistic Models
We investigate the stability of the electroweak Z-string at high
temperatures. Our results show that while finite temperature corrections can
improve the stability of the Z-string, their effect is not strong enough to
stabilize the Z-string in the standard electroweak model. Consequently, the
Z-string will be unstable even under the conditions present during the
electroweak phase transition. We then consider phenomenologically viable models
based on the gauge group and show
that metastable strings exist and are stable to small perturbations for a large
region of the parameter space for these models. We also show that these strings
are superconducting with bosonic charge carriers. The string superconductivity
may be able to stabilize segments and loops against dynamical contraction.

New research on bioregenerative air/water purification systems
For the past several years, air and water purification systems have been developed and used. This technology is based on the combined activities of plants and microorganisms as they function in a natural environment. More recently, researchers have begun to address the problems associated with indoor air pollution. Various common houseplants are currently being evaluated for their abilities to reduce concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCS) such as formaldehyde and benzene. With development of the Space Exploration Initiative, missions will increase in duration, and problems with resupply necessitates implementation of regenerative technology. Aspects of bioregenerative technology have been included in a habitat known as the BioHome. The ultimate goal is to use this technology in conjunction with physicochemical systems for air and water purification within closed systems. This study continued the risk assessment of bioregenerative technology with emphasis on biological hazards. In an effort to evaluate the risk for human infection, analyses were directed at enumeration of fecal streptococci and enteric viruses with the BioHome waste water treatment system
Study of guidance techniques for aerial application of agricultural compounds
Candidate systems were identified for evaluation of suitability in meeting specified accuracy requirements for a swath guidance system in an agriculture aircraft. Further examination reduced the list of potential candidates to a single category, i.e., transponder type systems, for detailed evaluation. Within this category three systems were found which met the basic accuracy requirements of the work statement. The Flying Flagman, the Electronic Flagging and the Raydist Director System. In addition to evaluating the systems against the specified requirements, each system was compared with the other two systems on a relative basis. The conclusions supported by the analyses show the Flying Flagman system to be the most suitable system currently available to meet the requirements

Magnetised Thermal Self-focusing and Filamentation of Long-Pulse Lasers in Plasmas Relevant to Magnetised ICF Experiments
In this paper we study the influence of the magnetised thermal conductivity
on the propagation of a nanosecond laser in an
underdense plasma by performing simulations of a paraxial model laser in a
plasma with the full Braginskii magnetised transport coefficients. Analytic
theory and simulations show the shortening of the self-focal length of a laser
beam in a plasma as a result of the reduction of the plasma thermal
conductivity in a magnetic field. Furthermore the filamentation of a laser via
the thermal mechanism is found to have an increased spatial growth rate in a
magnetised plasma. We discuss the effect of these results on recent magnetised
inertial fusion experiments where filamentation can be detrimental to laser
propagation and uniform laser heating. We conclude the application of external
magnetic fields to laser-plasma experiments requires the inclusion of the
extended electron transport terms in simulations of laser propagation.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

Hubble flow variance and the cosmic rest frame
We characterize the radial and angular variance of the Hubble flow in the
COMPOSITE sample of 4534 galaxies, on scales in which much of the flow is in
the nonlinear regime. With no cosmological assumptions other than the existence
of a suitably averaged linear Hubble law, we find with decisive Bayesian
evidence (ln B >> 5) that the Hubble constant averaged in independent spherical
radial shells is closer to its asymptotic value when referred to the rest frame
of the Local Group, rather than the standard rest frame of the Cosmic Microwave
Background. An exception occurs for radial shells in the range 40/h-60/h Mpc.
Angular averages reveal a dipole structure in the Hubble flow, whose amplitude
changes markedly over the range 32/h-62/h Mpc. Whereas the LG frame dipole is
initially constant and then decreases significantly, the CMB frame dipole
initially decreases but then increases. The map of angular Hubble flow
variation in the LG rest frame is found to coincide with that of the residual
CMB temperature dipole, with correlation coefficient -0.92. These results are
difficult to reconcile with the standard kinematic interpretation of the motion
of the Local Group in response to the clustering dipole, but are consistent
with a foreground non-kinematic anisotropy in the distance-redshift relation of
0.5% on scales up to 65/h Mpc. Effectively, the differential expansion of space
produced by nearby nonlinear structures of local voids and denser walls and
filaments cannot be reduced to a local boost. This hypothesis suggests a
reinterpretation of bulk flows, which may potentially impact on calibration of
supernovae distances, anomalies associated with large angles in the CMB
anisotropy spectrum, and the dark flow inferred from the kinematic
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. It is consistent with recent studies that find
evidence for a non-kinematic dipole in the distribution of distant radio

Stellar Encounters with Massive Star-Disk Systems
The dense, clustered environment in which massive stars form can lead to
interactions with neighboring stars. It has been hypothesized that collisions
and mergers may contribute to the growth of the most massive stars. In this
paper we extend the study of star-disk interactions to explore encounters
between a massive protostar and a less massive cluster sibling using the
publicly available SPH code GADGET-2. Collisions do not occur in the parameter
space studied, but the end state of many encounters is an eccentric binary with
a semi-major axis ~ 100 AU. Disk material is sometimes captured by the
impactor. Most encounters result in disruption and destruction of the initial
disk, and periodic torquing of the remnant disk. We consider the effect of the
changing orientation of the disk on an accretion driven jet, and the evolution
