Macroscopic control parameter for avalanche models for bursty transport
Similarity analysis is used to identify the control parameter RA for the subset of avalanching systems that can exhibit self-organized criticality (SOC). This parameter expresses the ratio of driving to dissipation. The transition to SOC, when the number of excited degrees of freedom is maximal, is found to occur when RA-->0. This is in the opposite sense to (Kolmogorov) turbulence, thus identifying a deep distinction between turbulence and SOC and suggesting an observable property that could distinguish them. A corollary of this similarity analysis is that SOC phenomenology, that is, power law scaling of avalanches, can persist for finite RA with the same RA-->0 exponent if the system supports a sufficiently large range of lengthscales, necessary for SOC to be a candidate for physical (RA finite) systems
Consumer-Directed Health Insurance vs. Managed Care: Analysis of Health Care Utilization and Expenditure Incurred by Employees in a Rural Area
Consumer-Directed Health Plans (CDHPs) are proposed as an option to control healthcare costs. No research has addressed their applicability in rural settings. This study analyzes three years (2003–2005) of healthcare expenditure and utilization incurred by two employers and a national carrier providing data from a rural state, Kentucky. The study included two measures of expenditures (health care and prescription drugs) and three measures of utilization (physician visits, hospital admissions, and hospital inpatient days). In general, the CDHP successfully controlled the growth of medical costs. These findings suggest that CDHPs may be a viable alternative benefit structure for rural employers
A Survey for Circumstellar Disks Around Young Substellar Objects
(Abridged) We have completed the first systematic survey for disks around
spectroscopically identified young brown dwarfs and very low mass stars. We
have obtained L'-band (3.8 um) imaging for 38 very cool objects in IC 348 and
Taurus. Our targets span spectral types from M6 to M9.5 (~100 to ~15 Mjup).
Using the objects' measured spectral types and extinctions, we find that most
of our sample (77%+/-15%) possess intrinsic IR excesses, indicative of disks.
Because the excesses are modest, conventional analyses using only IR colors
would have missed most of the sources with excesses. The observed IR excesses
are correlated with Halpha emission, consistent with a common accretion disk
origin. The excesses can be explained by disk reprocessing of starlight alone;
the implied accretion rates are at least an order of magnitude below typical
values for classical T Tauri stars. The observed distribution of IR excesses
suggests the presence of inner disk holes. The disk frequency appears to be
independent of the mass and age. In the same star-forming regions, disks around
brown dwarfs are at least as long-lived (~3 Myr) as disks around the T Tauri
stars. Altogether, the frequency and properties of young circumstellar disks
appear to be similar from the stellar regime down to the substellar and
planetary-mass regime. This provides prima facie evidence of a common origin
for most stars and brown dwarfs.Comment: ApJ, in press, 28 pages. Minor change to the online, abridged version

Fast stable direct fitting and smoothness selection for Generalized Additive Models
Existing computationally efficient methods for penalized likelihood GAM
fitting employ iterative smoothness selection on working linear models (or
working mixed models). Such schemes fail to converge for a non-negligible
proportion of models, with failure being particularly frequent in the presence
of concurvity. If smoothness selection is performed by optimizing `whole model'
criteria these problems disappear, but until now attempts to do this have
employed finite difference based optimization schemes which are computationally
inefficient, and can suffer from false convergence. This paper develops the
first computationally efficient method for direct GAM smoothness selection. It
is highly stable, but by careful structuring achieves a computational
efficiency that leads, in simulations, to lower mean computation times than the
schemes based on working-model smoothness selection. The method also offers a
reliable way of fitting generalized additive mixed models
Ambipolar charge injection and transport in a single pentacene monolayer island
Electrons and holes are locally injected in a single pentacene monolayer
island. The two-dimensional distribution and concentration of the injected
carriers are measured by electrical force microscopy. In crystalline monolayer
islands, both carriers are delocalized over the whole island. On disordered
monolayer, carriers stay localized at their injection point. These results
provide insight into the electronic properties, at the nanometer scale, of
organic monolayers governing performances of organic transistors and molecular
devices.Comment: To be published in Nano Letter
Rational bidding using reinforcement learning: an application in automated resource allocation
The application of autonomous agents by the provisioning and usage of computational resources is an attractive research field. Various methods and technologies in the area of artificial intelligence, statistics and economics are playing together to achieve i) autonomic resource provisioning and usage of computational resources, to invent ii) competitive bidding strategies for widely used market mechanisms and to iii) incentivize consumers and providers to use such market-based systems.
The contributions of the paper are threefold. First, we present a framework for supporting consumers and providers in technical and economic preference elicitation and the generation of bids. Secondly, we introduce a consumer-side reinforcement learning bidding strategy which enables rational behavior by the generation and selection of bids. Thirdly, we evaluate and compare this bidding strategy against a truth-telling bidding strategy for two kinds of market mechanisms – one centralized and one decentralized
First-principles calculation of intrinsic defect formation volumes in silicon
We present an extensive first-principles study of the pressure dependence of
the formation enthalpies of all the know vacancy and self-interstitial
configurations in silicon, in each charge state from -2 through +2. The neutral
vacancy is found to have a formation volume that varies markedly with pressure,
leading to a remarkably large negative value (-0.68 atomic volumes) for the
zero-pressure formation volume of a Frenkel pair (V + I). The interaction of
volume and charge was examined, leading to pressure--Fermi level stability
diagrams of the defects. Finally, we quantify the anisotropic nature of the
lattice relaxation around the neutral defects.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
