Constraining the properties of neutron star crusts with the transient low-mass X-ray binary Aql X-1
Aql X-1 is a prolific transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary that
exhibits an accretion outburst approximately once every year. Whether the
thermal X-rays detected in intervening quiescent episodes are the result of
cooling of the neutron star or due to continued low-level accretion remains
unclear. In this work we use Swift data obtained after the long and bright 2011
and 2013 outbursts, as well as the short and faint 2015 outburst, to
investigate the hypothesis that cooling of the accretion-heated neutron star
crust dominates the quiescent thermal emission in Aql X-1. We demonstrate that
the X-ray light curves and measured neutron star surface temperatures are
consistent with the expectations of the crust cooling paradigm. By using a
thermal evolution code, we find that ~1.2-3.2 MeV/nucleon of shallow heat
release describes the observational data well, depending on the assumed
mass-accretion rate and temperature of the stellar core. We find no evidence
for varying strengths of this shallow heating after different outbursts, but
this could be due to limitations of the data. We argue that monitoring Aql X-1
for up to ~1 year after future outbursts can be a powerful tool to break model
degeneracies and solve open questions about the magnitude, depth and origin of

Locus ceruleus regulates sensory encoding by neurons and networks in waking animals
Substantial evidence indicates that the locus ceruleus (LC)ânorepinephrine (NE) projection system regulates behavioral state and state-dependent processing of sensory information. Tonic LC discharge (0.1â5.0 Hz) is correlated with levels of arousal and demonstrates an optimal firing rate during good performance in a sustained attention task. In addition, studies have shown that locally applied NE or LC stimulation can modulate the responsiveness of neurons, including those in the thalamus, to nonmonoaminergic synaptic inputs. Many recent investigations further indicate that within sensory relay circuits of the thalamus both general and specific features of sensory information are represented within the collective firing patterns of like-modality neurons. However, no studies have examined the impact of NE or LC output on the discharge properties of ensembles of functionally related cells in intact, conscious animals. Here, we provide evidence linking LC neuronal discharge and NE efflux with LC-mediated modulation of single-neuron and neuronal ensemble representations of sensory stimuli in the ventral posteriomedial thalamus of waking rats. As such, the current study provides evidence that output from the LC across a physiologic range modulates single thalamic neuron responsiveness to synaptic input and representation of sensory information across ensembles of thalamic neurons in a manner that is consistent with the well documented actions of LC output on cognition

The valuation of European financial firms
We extend the recent literature concerning accounting based valuation models to investigate financial firms from six European countries with substantial financial sectors: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. Not only are these crucial industries worthy of study in their own right, but unusual accounting practices, and inter-country differences in those accounting practices, provide valuable insights into the accounting-value relationship. Our sample consists of 7,714 financial firm/years observations from 1,140 companies drawn from 1989-2000. Sub-samples include 1,309 firm/years for banks, 650 for insurance companies, 1,705 for real estate firms, and 3,239 for investment companies. In most countries we find that the valuation models work as well or better in explaining cross-sectional variations in the market-to-book ratio for financial firms as they do for industrial and commercial firms in the same countries, although Switzerland is an exception to this generalization. As expected, the results are sensitive to industrial differences, accounting regulation and accounting practices. In particular, marking assets to market value reduces the relevance of earnings figures and increases that of equity

Simultaneous detection of controlled substances in waste water
This study presents a method of simultaneous detection of both traditional and newly emerged drugs of abuse in wastewater. The method is based on solid phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. This analytical method separates 25 drugs from different classes including amphetamines, cathinones, tropane alkaloids, piperazines plus ketamine, amitriptyline, diazepam and morphine. In addition, newer compounds (methcathinone, mephedrone, butylone), and isomers (1-(2-methoxyphenyl) piperazine, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl) piperazine; 1-(2-flurophenyl) piperazine, 1-(4-flurophenyl) piperazine; 1-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl) piperazine, 1-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl) piperazine) have been separated, with greater sensitivity (Ă100 order of magnitude). This work reports the detection of butylone, mephedrone, 1-(4-methoxyphenyl) piperazine, 1-(2-flurophenyl) piperazine and 1-methyl-4-benzylpiperazine for the first time in waste water. This suggests that with changes in drug use patterns, constant monitoring of waste water entering treatment plants should be carried out and treatment processes need to be put in place for their removal
A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Phase II Trial of Gemcitabine and Nab-Paclitaxel Plus Apatorsen or Placebo in Patients with Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer: The RAINIER Trial.
Lessons learnedThe addition of the heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27)-targeting antisense oligonucleotide, apatorsen, to a standard first-line chemotherapy regimen did not result in improved survival in unselected patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer.Findings from this trial hint at the possible prognostic and predictive value of serum Hsp27 that may warrant further investigation.BackgroundThis randomized, double-blinded, phase II trial evaluated the efficacy of gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel plus either apatorsen, an antisense oligonucleotide targeting heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27) mRNA, or placebo in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer.MethodsPatients were randomized 1:1 to Arm A (gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel plus apatorsen) or Arm B (gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel plus placebo). Treatment was administered in 28-day cycles, with restaging every 2 cycles, until progression or intolerable toxicity. Serum Hsp27 levels were analyzed at baseline and on treatment. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS).ResultsOne hundred thirty-two patients were enrolled, 66 per arm. Cytopenias and fatigue were the most frequent grade 3/4 treatment-related adverse events for both arms. Median progression-free survival (PFS) and OS were 2.7 and 5.3 months, respectively, for arm A, and 3.8 and 6.9 months, respectively, for arm B. Objective response rate was 18% for both arms. Patients with high serum level of Hsp27 represented a poor-prognosis subgroup who may have derived modest benefit from addition of apatorsen.ConclusionAddition of apatorsen to chemotherapy does not improve outcomes in unselected patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer in the first-line setting, although a trend toward prolonged PFS and OS in patients with high baseline serum Hsp27 suggests this therapy may warrant further evaluation in this subgroup
Biliary stenting in patients with pancreatic cancer: results from a population-based cohort study
We aimed to describe management of biliary obstruction (BO) in the context of pancreatic cancer within a population-based cohort.We examined management of BO in 1863 patients diagnosed as having pancreatic cancer in 2010/2011. We used descriptive statistics and logistic regression to describe patterns of biliary stent usage, complications and duration of patency, associations between preoperative stenting and surgical outcomes, and between patient factors and management of jaundice.Almost half of the people in the cohort (n = 909) were jaundiced within 12 months of diagnosis. Two-thirds of these had at least 1 stent inserted. Preoperative stenting, mostly with plastic stents, occurred for 72% of patients who experienced jaundice prior to an attempted resection but was not associated with surgical outcomes. Seventy percent of the jaundiced patients who did not have an attempted resection were stented. Metal stents were less frequently replaced within 30 days than plastic (9% vs 42%). Living in a rural area was associated with reduced likelihood of having jaundice managed.Plastic stents were still used frequently, despite guidelines recommending metal in most contexts. Patients living in rural areas were less likely to have BO managed. This work highlights the need to monitor current practice
Determination of the absolute accuracy of UK chamber facilities used in measuring methane emissions from livestock
Respiration chambers are one of the primary sources of data on methane emissions from livestock. This paper describes the results from a coordinated set of chamber validation experiments which establishes the absolute accuracy of the methane emission rates measured by the chambers, and for the first time provides metrological traceability to international standards, assesses the impact of both analyser and chamber response times on measurement uncertainty and establishes direct comparability between measurements made across different facilities with a wide range of chamber designs. As a result of the validation exercise the estimated combined uncertainty associated with the overall capability across all facilities reduced from 25.7% (k = 2, 95% confidence) before the validation to 2.1% (k = 2, 95% confidence) when the validation results are applied to the facilitiesâ data
Ultrasonic assisted creep feed grinding of Inconel 718
AbstractThe paper details the effects of depth of cut and vibration amplitude when ultrasonic assisted (US) creep feed grinding Inconel 718 with an open structured alumina based wheel. The workpiece was actuated at a constant frequency (âŒ20.5kHz) via a block sonotrode attached to a 1kW piezoelectric transducer-generator system. A full factorial experimental array comprising 12 tests was conducted involving variation in depth of cut (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0mm), amplitude of vibration (high and low) and grinding condition (with and without vibration). Wheel speed and table feed were fixed at 30m/s and 600mm/min respectively for all tests. Application of ultrasonic vibration resulted in reductions in vertical (Fv) and horizontal (Fh) force components by up to 28% and 37% respectively, however greater wheel wear (30-60% lower G-ratio) occurred under hybrid operation due to increased grit/bond fracture. SEM micrographs of the slots machined with US assistance revealed higher levels of side flow/ploughing in comparison to standard creep feed ground specimens. Additionally, more overlapping grit marks were visible on surfaces subject to ultrasonic assisted grinding. Increasing amplitude of vibration produced lower grinding forces (up to 30% for Fv and 43% for Fh) but higher workpiece surface roughness (up to 24%). Topographic maps of grinding wheel surface replicas indicated that use of US vibration generally led to an increase in the number of active cutting points on the wheel
