Background/Aim: This study aimed to elucidate the detailed characteristics of CYP3A5 expression and the association between CYP3A5 expression and clinical outcomes in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Patients and Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled 124 Japanese patients with RCC treated at the Okayama University Hospital. The commonest CYP3A5 gene polymorphism, CYP3A5*3, and expression levels of CYP3A5 mRNA and protein in each tissue were examined. Results: Expression of CYP3A5 mRNA and protein in RCC tissues was significantly down-regulated compared to that in adjacent normal tissues. High level of CYP3A5 mRNA expression significantly extended cancer-specific survival (p=0.004) and overall survival (p=0.002). The CYP3A5 mRNA expression level was identified as a significant independent prognostic factor for both cancer-specific survival and overall survival. Conclusion: CYP3A5 could serve as a potential marker for prognostication and treatment planning for patients with RCC

Residents’ associations are long-established foundations of support for local communities in Japan. However, with rapid urbanization and the changes in socioeconomic circumstances, these traditional organizational forms have been forced to change. In this research, we focused on 67 residents’ associations in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture and classified them into rural and urban types according to their socioeconomic characteristics and land utilization. We then clarified the characteristics of the activities engaged in by these two types of association by comparing their residents’ association rules

Combined Laparoscopic and CT Monitoring of the Ice-Ball Margin during Cryoablation for Renal Cell Carcinoma Associated with von Hippel-Lindau Disease: First Case

We report a 47-year-old Japanese female with 10 previous treatments for multiple bilateral renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with von Hippel-Lindau disease. The 14-mm right lower pole renal tumor was in contact with the right ureter. Laparoscopic cryoablation was performed to protect the ureter wrapped with gauze. Computed tomography (CT) monitoring was used to confirm the precise ≥ 6 mm ice-ball margin. There was no local progression at 6-months post-surgery. The serum creatinine has been stable. This is apparently the first report of combined laparoscopic and CT monitoring of an ice-ball formation and its margin during cryoablation for RCC

    Candida albicansマンナンのマクロファージ傷害作用

Mannan of Candida albicans NIH A-207 strain induced cytotoxic activity in RAW264.7 cells, a murine macrophage cell line, but not in U937 cells, a human monocyte cell line. The mannan greatly increased TNF-α production in RAW264.7 cells. Anti-TNF-α antibody completely inhibited both the TNF-α production from RAW264.7 cells and the cytotoxicity of the cells by mannan. Commercial recombinant TNF-α showed cytotoxic activity in RAW264.7 cells

The role of endoscopic ultrasound in the evaluation of rectal polypoid lesions in 25 dogs

We investigated the role of endoscopic ultrasound in the evaluation of rectal polypoid lesions in 25 dogs. Twenty-five cases of rectal polypoid lesions in dogs who underwent surgery after endoscopic and EUS assessment were studied. The invasion depth of the polypoid lesion was classified as M stage (lesions in the mucosa only), SM stage (lesions in the mucosa and submucosa), and MP stage (lesions extending to the muscularis propria). Transabdominal ultrasound was performed in nine cases, but not all were evaluated in detail. EUS provided detailed images for all cases and showed a significant correlation with surgical pathology in the T stage (accuracy, 92%; κ = 0.77). As per classification by invasion depth, inflammatory polyps were only M polypoid lesions, whereas SM and MP polypoid lesions were only adenocarcinomas (P < 0.05). The average survival time according to specific condition was as follows: 1,235 days for inflammatory polyps, and 804 days for M adenocarcinoma. The survival time of two SM adenocarcinoma cases was 756 and 2,114 days, respectively, and the survival time of two MP adenocarcinoma cases was 16 and 42 days, respectively. EUS were useful for the evaluation of rectal polypoid lesions in dogs, whereas transabdominal ultrasound was not. Determination of the invasion depth of polypoid lesions using EUS may be useful for the evaluation of malignancy and prognosis

Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid and Serum Canine Surfactant Protein A Concentrations in Dogs with Chronic Cough by Bronchial and Interstitial Lung Diseases

We measured bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum canine surfactant protein (cSP)-A concentrations in dogs with chronic cough. There were no significant differences between bronchial and interstitial lung diseases in BALF cSP-A concentrations. However, serum cSP-A concentrations in dogs with the interstitial lung disease as diffuse panbronchiolitis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis were significantly higher than those in dogs with the bronchial disease as chronic bronchitis. These results suggest that serum cSP-A concentrations may be a useful and noninvasive biomarker to understand the existence of interstitial lung damage in dogs with chronic cough
