    Management of Wintering Short-Eared Owls at Airports in the Lower Great Lakes Region

    USDA Wildlife Services airport wildlife biologists have been tasked with reducing the hazards that raptors (including owls) pose to safe aircraft operations at airports and military airfields throughout the USA. A review of available wildlife strike information suggests short-eared owls (Asio flammeus) are frequently struck by aircraft during the winter months at numerous airports within the Lower Great Lakes Region of the United States. Further, this species is listed as ‘endangered’ by state fish and wildlife agencies in many states, although not at the federal level. Consequently, there is particular interest in developing non-lethal management tools for reducing the hazards posed by this species. In an effort to gain a better understanding of the efficacy of managing the hazards to aviation posed by short-eared owls, we developed methods to live-capture, mark with USGS aluminum leg bands, and translocate short-eared owls from airport environments (i.e., airfield areas) as part of the overall programs to reduce wildlife hazards to safe aircraft operations at airports. During 2012−2015, a total of 32 short-eared owls was live-captured, banded, and translocated to release sites approximately 64 to 80 km (40 to 50 miles) away from the airports. Only 1 short-eared owl (3%) was resighted and this bird was found on a different airport from where it had been translocated from. Future research in needed to evaluate the efficacy of translocating wintering short-eared owls from airport environments

    Isotopic evidence for mercury photoreduction and retention on particles in surface waters of Central California, USA

    Cache Creek (Coast Range, California) and the Yuba River (Sierra Nevada Foothills, California) are two river systems affected by extensive mercury (Hg) contamination due to legacy sources of Hg related to mining. Stable Hg isotope techniques have proven useful for elucidating the complex cycling of Hg within aquatic ecosystems, and we applied these techniques to improve understanding of Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) transformations in these watersheds. Total mercury (THg) concentrations and Hg stable isotope ratios were measured in filtered surface waters and suspended particulate matter collected from 14 sites within the Cache Cr. and Yuba R. watersheds. Filtered surface waters from both watersheds exhibited values of ∆199Hg (0.37‰ to 0.71‰), consistently elevated above those observed in sediments (∆199Hg average = 0.07‰). Associated suspended particulates from these surface water samples displayed a much greater range of values for ∆199Hg (−0.61‰ to 0.70‰), although suspended particulates from the Yuba R. exhibited mostly negative ∆199Hg values (−0.61‰ to 0.10‰). The relationship between ∆199Hg and ∆201Hg in the filtered surface waters and associated suspended particulates was calculated using a bivariate York regression, yielding a slope of 1.57 ± 0.49 (±2SE) for the Yuba R. and 1.40 ± 0.27 (±2SE) for Cache Cr., both within error of the previously reported experimentally-derived slopes for MeHg- and inorganic Hg(II)-photoreduction. This provides isotopic evidence that Hg photoreduction is occurring within these surface waters to a significant degree, and suspended particulate phases are retaining the reduced product of Hg photoreduction, particularly within the Yuba R. The isotopic compositions of filtered surface waters are consistent with the isotopic signatures recorded in biota at low trophic positions within these watersheds, suggesting that the reservoir of Hg incorporated within the biota of these systems is similar to the filter-passing Hg fraction in surface waters

    The oceans are an important global reservoir for mercury (Hg), and marine fish consumption is the dominant human exposure pathway for its toxic methylated form. A more thorough understanding of the global biogeochemical cycle of Hg requires additional information on the mechanisms that control Hg cycling in pelagic marine waters. In this study, Hg isotope ratios and total Hg concentrations are used to explore Hg biogeochemistry in oligotrophic marine environments north of Hawaii. We present the first measurements of the vertical water column distribution of Hg concentrations and the Hg isotopic composition in precipitation, marine particles, and zooplankton near Station ALOHA (22°45â ²N, 158°W). Our results reveal production and demethylation of methylmercury in both the euphotic (0â 175 m) and mesopelagic zones (200â 1,000 m). We document a strong relationship between Hg isotopic composition and depth in particles, zooplankton, and fish in the water column and diurnal variations in Î 199Hg values in zooplankton sampled near the surface (25 m). Based on these observations and stable Hg isotope relationships in the marine food web, we suggest that the Hg found in large pelagic fish at Station ALOHA was originally deposited largely by precipitation, transformed into methylâ Hg, and bioaccumulated in situ in the water column.     Linking Oviposition Site Choice to Offspring Fitness in Aedes aegypti: Consequences for Targeted Larval Control of Dengue Vectors

    Controlling the mosquito Aedes aegypti, the predominant dengue vector, requires understanding the ecological and behavioral factors that influence population abundance. Females of several mosquito species are able to identify high-quality egg-laying sites, resulting in enhanced offspring development and survival, and ultimately promoting population growth. Here, the authors investigated egg-laying decisions of Ae. aegypti. Paradoxically, they found that larval survival and development were poorest in the containers females most often selected for egg deposition. Thus, egg-laying decisions may contribute to crowding of larvae and play a role in regulating mosquito populations. The authors also tested whether removal of the containers producing the most adult mosquitoes, a World Health Organization-recommended dengue prevention strategy, changes the pattern of how females allocate their eggs. Elimination of the most productive containers led to a more even distribution of eggs in one trial, but not another. These results suggest that behavioral adjustments by egg-laying females may lessen the effectiveness of a common mosquito control tactic. The authors advocate incorporating control strategies that take advantage of the natural egg-laying preferences of this vector species, such as luring egg-laying females to traps or places where their eggs will accumulate, but not develop

    Logging Affects Fledgling Sex Ratios and Baseline Corticosterone in a Forest Songbird

    Silviculture (logging) creates a disturbance to forested environments. The degree to which forests are modified depends on the logging prescription and forest stand characteristics. In this study we compared the effects of two methods of group-selection (“moderate” and “heavy”) silviculture (GSS) and undisturbed reference stands on stress and offspring sex ratios of a forest interior species, the Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla), in Algonquin Provincial Park, Canada. Blood samples were taken from nestlings for corticosterone and molecular sexing. We found that logging creates a disturbance that is stressful for nestling Ovenbirds, as illustrated by elevated baseline corticosterone in cut sites. Ovenbirds nesting in undisturbed reference forest produce fewer male offspring per brood (proportion male = 30%) while logging with progressively greater forest disturbance, shifted the offspring sex ratio towards males (proportion male: moderate = 50%, heavy = 70%). If Ovenbirds in undisturbed forests usually produce female-biased broods, then the production of males as a result of logging may disrupt population viability. We recommend a broad examination of nestling sex ratios in response to anthropogenic disturbance to determine the generality of our findings

    Introduction to “Binary Binds”: Deconstructing Sex and Gender Dichotomies in Archaeological Practice

    YesGender archaeology has made significant strides toward deconstructing the hegemony of binary categorizations. Challenging dichotomies such as man/woman, sex/gender, and biology/culture, approaches informed by poststructuralist, feminist, and queer theories have moved beyond essentialist and universalist identity constructs to more nuanced configurations. Despite the theoretical emphasis on context, multiplicity, and fluidity, binary starting points continue to streamline the spectrum of variability that is recognized, often reproducing normative assumptions in the evidence. The contributors to this special issue confront how sex, gender, and sexuality categories condition analytical visibility, aiming to develop approaches that respond to the complexity of theory in archaeological practice. The papers push the ontological and epistemological boundaries of bodies, personhood, and archaeological possibility, challenging a priori assumptions that contain how sex, gender, and sexuality categories are constituted and related to each other. Foregrounding intersectional approaches that engage with ambiguity, variability, and difference, this special issue seeks to “de-contain” categories, assumptions, and practices from “binding” our analytical gaze toward only certain kinds of persons and knowledges, in interpretations of the past and practices in the present
