    Pattern of skin diseases and common drugs prescribed in dermatology OPD of an Indian tertiary care hospital

    Background: The pattern of skin diseases varies from one country to another and across different parts within the same country. The prevalence of skin disease in the general population varies from 11.16 % to 63 %. Patients in their second and third decades of age form the largest group of population. A proper treatment is essential for cure and control of these diseases. The aim of the study was to find the pattern of skin diseases in Meerut district of western UP and common group of drugs prescribed for them.Methods: It was a prospective, observational, single center study. The relevant data was collected from OPD prescriptions by taking photographs of the prescriptions and details were filled in the predesigned proforma.Results: A total of 500 OPD prescriptions were collected and analyzed for demographic profile, disease incidence and drug prescription. Three most common conditions observed were tinea (15.25%), acne (12.36%), drug induced cutaneous reactions (10.11%). Antifungals (19.4%), Antibiotics (17.6%), Antihistamines (15.9%) and Corticosteroids (9.4%) were the most common class of drugs prescribed. Dosage forms prescribed were mostly topical (51.2%) in the form of ointments, creams, lotions, shampoo, powders.Conclusions: From our study we found out that tinea (15.25%) and acne (12.36%) were more common in this region and antifungals were most the commonly prescribed group of drugs (19.4%). Number of drugs/prescription was much higher (4.1) than the recommended limit of 2 approved by WHO and practice of polypharmacy was also commonly seen

    Eighth order Predictor-Corrector Method to Solve Quadratic Riccati Differential Equations

    In this paper, the eighth-order predictor-corrector method is presented for solving quadratic Riccati differential equations. First, the interval is discretized and then the method is formulated by using Newton’s backward difference interpolation formula. The stability and convergence of the method have been investigated. To validate the applicability of the proposed method, two model examples with exact solutions have been considered and numerically solved. Maximum absolute errors are presented in tables and figures for different values of mesh size h and the present method gives better results than some existing numerical methods reported in the literature. &nbsp

    Effects of Lipid Activating Chemical Compounds on the Growth and Production of Fatty Acids and Metabolites in Green Algae

    This study examines the effects of small molecule lipid activating chemical compound, discovered from the high throughput screening (HTS) (2) methods of previous FATTT Lab studies on the growth and production of lipids and metabolites in microalgae. For this study, the effects of two lipid inducing chemical compounds from the HTS method were implemented with the microalgae strain Chlamydomonas reinhardtii CC-125. This experiment focused on scaling up to large amounts of culture, approximately 1L. These cultures were grown in specially designed large bioreactors that were able to accommodate for such large volume of algal culture. Algal cells were treated with 10 μM concentration of the chemical compounds at initial time of inoculation. A control set was also implemented to be compared against the treatment conditions. Daily samples of algae cultures were taken in order to analyze growth on a time course-based method in addition. After five days, algae cultures were harvested completely, spun down into pellet form to be freeze dried vacuum by lyophilizer machine. The dried biomass was then recorded and used to carry out analytical techniques to quantify total lipids and metabolites of the algal cells

    Optimizing the Traversal Time for Gantry Trajectories for Proton Arc Therapy Treatment Plans

    Background: Proton arc therapy is an emerging radiation therapy technique where either the gantry or the patient continuously rotates during the irradiation treatment. One of the perceived advantages of proton arc therapy is the reduced treatment time, but it is still unclear exactly how long these treatment times will be, given that no machine capable of its delivery is available at the market at the time of writing. Purpose: We introduce the algorithm Arc Trajectory Optimization Method (ATOM), which aims to determine an efficient velocity profile for the gantry for rapid delivery of a given proton arc treatment plan. Methods: ATOM computes the trajectory with the shortest delivery time while ensuring there is enough time to deliver all spots in each energy layer and switch energy between layers. The feasibility of the dynamic gantry movement was assured by enforcing maximum and minimum limits for velocity, acceleration, and jerk. This was achieved by discretizing the gantry velocity and combining the A* algorithm with the open-source motion generation library Ruckig. The algorithm was tested on a synthetic data set as well as a liver case, a prostate case and a head and neck case. Results: Arc trajectories for plans with 360 energy layers were calculated in under a second using 256 discrete velocities. Conclusions: ATOM is an open-source C++ library with a Python interface that rapidly generates velocity profiles, making it a highly efficient tool for determining proton arc delivery times, which could be integrated into the treatment planning process
