About the role of visual field defects in pure alexia

Pure alexia is an acquired reading disorder characterized by a disproportionate prolongation of reading time as a function of word length. Although the vast majority of cases reported in the literature show a right-sided visual defect, little is known about the contribution of this low-level visual impairment to their reading difficulties. The present study was aimed at investigating this issue by comparing eye movement patterns during text reading in six patients with pure alexia with those of six patients with hemianopic dyslexia showing similar right-sided visual field defects. We found that the role of the field defect in the reading difficulties of pure alexics was highly deficit-specific. While the amplitude of rightward saccades during text reading seems largely determined by the restricted visual field, other visuo-motor impairments—particularly the pronounced increases in fixation frequency and viewing time as a function of word length—may have little to do with their visual field defect. In addition, subtracting the lesions of the hemianopic dyslexics from those found in pure alexics revealed the largest group differences in posterior parts of the left fusiform gyrus, occipito-temporal sulcus and inferior temporal gyrus. These regions included the coordinate assigned to the centre of the visual word form area in healthy adults, which provides further evidence for a relation between pure alexia and a damaged visual word form area. Finally, we propose a list of three criteria that may improve the differential diagnosis of pure alexia and allow appropriate therapy recommendation

Explicitly searching for useful inventions: dynamic relatedness and the costs of connecting versus synthesizing

Inventions combine technological features. When features are barely related, burdensomely broad knowledge is required to identify the situations that they share. When features are overly related, burdensomely broad knowledge is required to identify the situations that distinguish them. Thus, according to my first hypothesis, when features are moderately related, the costs of connecting and costs of synthesizing are cumulatively minimized, and the most useful inventions emerge. I also hypothesize that continued experimentation with a specific set of features is likely to lead to the discovery of decreasingly useful inventions; the earlier-identified connections reflect the more common consumer situations. Covering data from all industries, the empirical analysis provides broad support for the first hypothesis. Regressions to test the second hypothesis are inconclusive when examining industry types individually. Yet, this study represents an exploratory investigation, and future research should test refined hypotheses with more sophisticated data, such as that found in literature-based discovery research

Chronology and stratigraphy of the Medieval pottery of Cyprus: a critical review

The paper deals primarily with problems, not with facts. The main interest is a discussion of questions to be faced if we attempt to get reliable answers about classification and dating of the Medieval pottery produced in Cyprus. After a brief look at the development of research on this class of pottery, the paper concentrates on three main topics. First: the problem of local workshops, second: their stratigraphy and chronology, third: Cypriot glazed pottery in the East Mediterranean context. The results published so far ask obviously for a critical review of the present state of research with regard to the limits imposed by the evidence. The paper tries to differentiate reliable results based on conclusive stratigraphical and comparative evidence from hypotheses of a more speculative character. A critical interpretation of the evidence from the earth serves to define more precisely the problems of future research. It is a long established fact that the development of the Cypriot ceramic production reflects general developments in the Near Eastern and Western Asian region into which Byzantine and Frankish Cyprus was closely integrated. Although the impact of Eastern traditions on the Cypriot manufacture is obvious, the way in which they operated yet needs further critical analysis
