Stress Dependence of Exciton Relaxation Processes in Cu2O
A comprehensive study of the exciton relaxation processes in Cu2O has led to
some surprises. We find that the ortho-para conversion rate becomes slower at
high stress, and that the Auger nonradiative recombination rate increases with
stress, with apparently no Auger recombination at zero stress. These results
have important consequences for the pursuit of Bose-Einstein condensation of
excitons in a harmonic potential.Comment: 10 figures, 1 tabl
EUV Analysis of a Quasi-Static Coronal Loop Structure
Decaying active region 10942 is investigated from 4:00-16:00 UT on February
24, 2007 using a suite of EUV observing instruments. Results from Hinode/EIS,
STEREO and TRACE show that although the active region has decayed and no
sunspot is present, the physical mechanisms that produce distinguishable loop
structures, spectral line broadening, and plasma flows still occur. A coronal
loop that appears as a blue-shifted structure in Doppler maps is apparent in
intensity images of log(T) = 6.0-6.3 ions. The loop structure is found to be
anti-correlated with spectral line broadening generally attributed to
nonthermal velocities. This coronal loop structure is investigated physically
(temperature, density, geometry) and temporally. Lightcurves created from
imaging instruments show brightening and dimming of the loop structure on two
different time scales; short pulses of 10-20 min and long duration dimming of
2-4 hours until its disappearance. The coronal loop structure, formed from
relatively blue-shifted material that is anti-correlated with spectral line
broadening, shows a density of 10^10 to 10^9.3 cm-3 and is visible for longer
than characteristic cooling times. The maximum nonthermal spectral line
broadenings are found to be adjacent to the footpoint of the coronal loop

Habitable Zones of Host Stars During the Post-MS Phase
A star will become brighter and brighter with stellar evolution, and the
distance of its habitable zone will become farther and farther. Some planets
outside the habitable zone of a host star during the main sequence phase may
enter the habitable zone of the host star during other evolutionary phases. A
terrestrial planet within the habitable zone of its host star is generally
thought to be suited to life existence. Furthermore, a rocky moon around a
giant planet may be also suited to life survive, provided that the planet-moon
system is within the habitable zone of its host star. Using Eggleton's code and
the boundary flux of habitable zone, we calculate the habitable zone of our
Solar after the main sequence phase. It is found that Mars' orbit and Jupiter's
orbit will enter the habitable zone of Solar during the subgiant branch phase
and the red giant branch phase, respectively. And the orbit of Saturn will
enter the habitable zone of Solar during the He-burning phase for about 137
million years. Life is unlikely at any time on Saturn, as it is a giant gaseous
planet. However, Titan, the rocky moon of Saturn, may be suitable for
biological evolution and become another Earth during that time. For low-mass
stars, there are similar habitable zones during the He-burning phase as our
Solar, because there are similar core masses and luminosities for these stars

Seasonal size variation in the predatory cladoceran Bythotrephes cederstroemii in Lake Michigan
1.  Dry weight, body length and spine length were measured for the exotic cladoceran Bythotrephes cederstroemii collected from offshore and inshore stations in southeastern Lake Michigan. Average dry weight of each developmental stage exhibited seasonal variation by a factor of more than 5. 2.  Mean dry weight of Bythotrephes was closely correlated with water temperature. Contrary to the inverse relationship between water temperature and body size frequently observed for other invertebrates, the dry weight of Bythotrephes increased at higher ambient temperatures. 3.  No significant correlation was observed between abundances of major zooplankton taxa and the dry weight of Bythotrephes . An indirect effect of temperature on prey consumption may cause seasonal variation in dry weight of Bythotrephes in Lake Michigan. 4.  Distances between adjacent pairs of barbs, added to the caudal spine with each moult, are significantly shorter in Bythotrephes which produce resting eggs. Signatures of the slow solar wind streams from active regions in the inner corona
Some of local sources of the slow solar wind can be associated with
spectroscopically detected plasma outflows at edges of active regions
accompanied with specific signatures in the inner corona. The EUV telescopes
(e.g. SPIRIT/CORONAS-F, TESIS/CORONAS-Photon and SWAP/PROBA2) sometimes
observed extended ray-like structures seen at the limb above active regions in
1MK iron emission lines and described as "coronal rays". To verify the
relationship between coronal rays and plasma outflows, we analyze an isolated
active region (AR) adjacent to small coronal hole (CH) observed by different
EUV instruments in the end of July - beginning of August 2009. On August 1 EIS
revealed in the AR two compact outflows with the Doppler velocities V =10-30
km/s accompanied with fan loops diverging from their regions. At the limb the
ARCH interface region produced coronal rays observed by EUVI/STEREO-A on July
31 as well as by TESIS on August 7. The rays were co-aligned with open magnetic
field lines expanded to the streamer stalks. Using the DEM analysis, it was
found that the fan loops diverged from the outflow regions had the dominant
temperature of ~1 MK, which is similar to that of the outgoing plasma streams.
Parameters of the solar wind measured by STEREO-B, ACE, WIND, STEREO-A were
conformed with identification of the ARCH as a source region at the
Wang-Sheeley-Arge map of derived coronal holes for CR 2086. The results of the
study support the suggestion that coronal rays can represent signatures of
outflows from ARs propagating in the inner corona along open field lines into

Preembryo Personhood: An Assessment of the President’s Council Arguments
The President’s Council on Bioethics has addressed the moral status of human preembryos in its reports on stem cell research and human therapeutic cloning. Although the Council has been criticized for being hand-picked to favor the right-to-life viewpoint concerning human preembryos, it has embraced the idea that the right-to-life position should be defended in secular terms. This is an important feature of the Council’s work, and it demonstrates a recognition of the need for genuine engagement between opposing sides in the debate over stem cell research. To promote this engagement, the Council has stated in secular terms several arguments for the personhood of human preembryos. This essay presents and critiques those arguments, and it concludes that they are unsuccessful. If the best arguments in support of the personhood of human preembryos have been presented by the Council, then there are no reasonable secular arguments in support of that view
Extreme Ultra-Violet Spectroscopy of the Lower Solar Atmosphere During Solar Flares
The extreme ultraviolet portion of the solar spectrum contains a wealth of
diagnostic tools for probing the lower solar atmosphere in response to an
injection of energy, particularly during the impulsive phase of solar flares.
These include temperature and density sensitive line ratios, Doppler shifted
emission lines and nonthermal broadening, abundance measurements, differential
emission measure profiles, and continuum temperatures and energetics, among
others. In this paper I shall review some of the advances made in recent years
using these techniques, focusing primarily on studies that have utilized data
from Hinode/EIS and SDO/EVE, while also providing some historical background

A high repetition rate beam profile monitor
A high repetition rate beam profile monitor is needed to measure the momentum distribution of each bunch in a 200 bunch train at the Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility. We have designed a monitor using secondary emission from a microstrip delay line. The delay line converts position information into discrete time delays synchronous with the sampling rate of a fast transient digitizer. We present the results of initial electrical testing here
Sub-femto-g free fall for space-based gravitational wave observatories: LISA pathfinder results
We report the first results of the LISA Pathfinder in-flight experiment. The results demonstrate that two free-falling reference test masses, such as those needed for a space-based gravitational wave observatory like LISA, can be put in free fall with a relative acceleration noise with a square root of the power spectral density of 5.2 ± 0.1 fm s−2/√Hz or (0.54 ± 0.01) × 10−15 g/√Hz, with g the standard gravity, for frequencies between 0.7 and 20 mHz. This value is lower than the LISA Pathfinder requirement by more than a factor 5 and within a factor 1.25 of the requirement for the LISA mission, and is compatible with Brownian noise from viscous damping due to the residual gas surrounding the test masses. Above 60 mHz the acceleration noise is dominated by interferometer displacement readout noise at a level of (34.8 ± 0.3) fm/√Hz, about 2 orders of magnitude better than requirements. At f ≤ 0.5 mHz we observe a low-frequency tail that stays below 12 fm s−2/√Hz down to 0.1 mHz. This performance would allow for a space-based gravitational wave
observatory with a sensitivity close to what was originally foreseen for LISA
