Semantic aware Bayesian network model for actionable knowledge discovery in linked data
The majority of the conventional mining algorithms treat the mining process as an isolated data-driven procedure and overlook the semantic of the targeted data. As a result, the generated patterns are abundant and end users cannot act upon them seamlessly. Furthermore, interdisciplinary knowledge can not be obtained from domain-specific silo of data. The emergence of Linked Data (LD) as a new model for knowledge representation, which intertwines data with its semantics, has introduced new opportunities for data miners. Accordingly, this paper proposes an ontology-based Semantic-Aware Bayesian network (BN) model. In contrast to the existing mining algorithms, the proposed model does into transform the original format of the LD set. Therefore, it not only accommodates the semantic aspects in LD, but also caters to the need of connecting different data-sets from different domains. We evaluate the proposed model on a Bone Dysplasia dataset, Experimental results show promising performance
High-bone-mass causing mutant LRP5 receptors are resistant to endogenous inhibitors in vivo
Certain missense mutations affecting LRP5 cause high bone mass (HBM) in humans. Based on in vitro evidence, HBM LRP5 receptors are thought to exert their effects by providing resistance to binding/inhibition of secreted LRP5 inhibitors such as sclerostin (SOST) and Dickkopf homolog-1 (DKK1). We previously reported the creation of two Lrp5 HBM knock-in mouse models, in which the human p.A214V or p.G171V missense mutations were knocked into the endogenous Lrp5 locus. To determine whether HBM knock-in mice are resistant to SOST- or DKK1-induced osteopenia, we bred Lrp5 HBM mice with transgenic mice that overexpress human SOST in osteocytes ((8kb) Dmp1-SOST) or mouse DKK1 in osteoblasts and osteocytes ((2.3kb) Col1a1-Dkk1). We observed that the (8kb) Dmp1-SOST transgene significantly lowered whole-body bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), femoral and vertebral trabecular bone volume fraction (BV/TV), and periosteal bone-formation rate (BFR) in wild-type mice but not in mice with Lrp5 p.G171V and p.A214V alleles. The (2.3kb) Col1a1-Dkk1 transgene significantly lowered whole-body BMD, BMC, and vertebral BV/TV in wild-type mice and affected p.A214V mice more than p.G171V mice. These in vivo data support in vitro studies regarding the mechanism of HBM-causing mutations, and imply that HBM LRP5 receptors differ in their relative sensitivity to inhibition by SOST and DKK1
Chronotype and environmental light exposure in a student population
In humans and most other species, changes in the intensity and duration of light provide a critical set of signals for the synchronisation of the circadian system to the astronomical day. The timing of activity within the 24Â h day defines an individualâs chronotype, i.e. morning, intermediate or evening type. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between environmental light exposure, due to geographical location, on the chronotype of university students. Over 6Â 000 university students from cities in the Northern Hemisphere (Oxford, Munich and Groningen) and Southern Hemisphere (Perth, Melbourne and Auckland) completed the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire. In parallel, light measures (daily irradiance, timing of sunrise and sunset) were compiled from satellite or ground stations at each of these locations. Our data shows that later mid-sleep point on free days (corrected for oversleep on weekends MFSsc) is associated with (i) residing further from the equator, (ii) a later sunset, (iii) spending more time outside and (iv) waking from sleep significantly after sunrise. However, surprisingly, MSFscdid not correlate with daily light intensity at the different geographical locations. Although these findings appear to contradict earlier studies suggesting that in the wider population increased light exposure is associated with an earlier chronotype, our findings are derived exclusively from a student population aged between 17 and 26Â years. We therefore suggest that the age and occupation of our population increase the likelihood that these individuals will experience relatively little light exposure in the morning whilst encountering more light exposure later in the day, when light has a delaying effect upon the circadian system
Spin Dynamics of the Triangular Heisenberg Antiferromagnet: A Schwinger Boson Approach
We have analyzed the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on
the triangular lattice using a Schwinger boson mean-field theory. By expanding
around a state with local order, we obtain, in the limit of
infinite spin, results for the excitation spectrum in complete agreement with
linear spin wave theory (LSWT). In contrast to LSWT, however, the modes at the
ordering wave vectors acquire a mass for finite spin. We discuss the origin of

Quantum Ferromagnetism and Phase Transitions in Double-Layer Quantum Hall Systems
Double layer quantum Hall systems have interesting properties associated with
interlayer correlations. At where is an odd integer they exhibit
spontaneous symmetry breaking equivalent to that of spin easy-plane
ferromagnets, with the layer degree of freedom playing the role of spin. We
explore the rich variety of quantum and finite temperature phase transitions in
these systems. In particular, we show that a magnetic field oriented parallel
to the layers induces a highly collective commensurate-incommensurate phase

Predicting Outcome in dogs with Primary Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia: Results of a Multicenter Case Registry
BACKGROUND: Outcome prediction in dogs with immuneâmediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is challenging and few prognostic indicators have been consistently identified. OBJECTIVES: An online case registry was initiated to: prospectively survey canine IMHA presentation and management in the British Isles; evaluate 2 previously reported illness severity scores, Canine Hemolytic Anemia Score (CHAOS) and Tokyo and to identify independent prognostic markers. ANIMALS: Data from 276 dogs with primary IMHA across 10 referral centers were collected between 2008 and 2012. METHODS: Outcome prediction by previously reported illnessâseverity scores was tested using univariate logistic regression. Independent predictors of death in hospital or by 30âdays after admission were identified using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Purebreds represented 89.1% dogs (n = 246). Immunosuppressive medications were administered to 88.4% dogs (n = 244), 76.1% (n = 210) received antithrombotics and 74.3% (n = 205) received packed red blood cells. Seventyâfour per cent of dogs (n = 205) were discharged from hospital and 67.7% (n = 187) were alive 30âdays after admission. Two dogs were lost to followâup at 30âdays. In univariate analyses CHAOS was associated with death in hospital and death within 30âdays. Tokyo score was not associated with either outcome measure. A model containing SIRSâclassification, ASA classification, ALT, bilirubin, urea and creatinine predicting outcome at discharge was accurate in 82% of cases. ASA classification, bilirubin, urea and creatinine were independently associated with death in hospital or by 30âdays. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Markers of kidney function, bilirubin concentration and ASA classification are independently associated with outcome in dogs with IMHA. Validation of this score in an unrelated population is now warranted
Possible Quantum Spin Liquid States on the Triangular and Kagome Lattices
The frustrated spin-one-half Heisenberg model on triangualr and Kagome
Lattices is mapped onto a single specis of fermion carrying statistical flux.
The corresponding Chern-Simons gauge theory is analyzed at the Gaussian level
and found to be massive. This provides a new motivation for the spin-liquid
Kalmeyer-Laughlin wave function. Good overlap of this wave function with the

Is the lower return to immigrantsâ foreign schooling a postarrival problem in Canada?
Published versionUsing the 2006 Canadian Census, this paper investigates the lower return to immigrantsâ foreign education credentials after adjusting for their occupational matching in hosting labor markets. We develop two continuous indices that quantify the matching quality of the native-born in both horizontal (fields of study) and vertical (educational degrees) dimensions. This allows us to separate the effects of immigrantsâ occupational attainment and their foreign schooling quality on wage earnings by measuring immigrantsâ occupational match relative to that of native-born. Our findings indicate that the lack of portability in immigrantsâ foreign credentials may not be addressed effectively by post arrival policies as the results show that a significant and persistent poor matching quality for internationally educated immigrants cannot substantiate the lower return to their foreign education credentials
