The effects of childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder on women and their relationships: a qualitative study
There is converging evidence that 1%-2% of women develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of childbirth. The current study aimed to explore the long-term effects of childbirth-related PTSD on women, their relationship with their partner and their relationship with their child. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with six women who reported clinically significant PTSD after birth, ranging from 7 months to 18 years beforehand. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Childbirth-related PTSD was found to have wide-ranging effects on women and their relationships. Women reported changes in physical well-being, mood and behaviour, social interaction, and fear of childbirth. Women reported negative effects on their relationship with their partner, including sexual dysfunction, disagreements and blame for events of birth. The mother-baby bond was also seriously affected. Nearly all women reported initial feelings of rejection towards the baby but this changed over time. Long-term, women seemed to have either avoidant or anxious attachments with their child. It is concluded that childbirth-related PTSD can have severe and lasting effects on women and their relationships with their partner and children. Further research is needed to compare this to normal difficulties experienced by women after having children
Driving terrestrial ecosystem models from space
Regional air pollution, land-use conversion, and projected climate change all affect ecosystem processes at large scales. Changes in vegetation cover and growth dynamics can impact the functioning of ecosystems, carbon fluxes, and climate. As a result, there is a need to assess and monitor vegetation structure and function comprehensively at regional to global scales. To provide a test of our present understanding of how ecosystems operate at large scales we can compare model predictions of CO2, O2, and methane exchange with the atmosphere against regional measurements of interannual variation in the atmospheric concentration of these gases. Recent advances in remote sensing of the Earth's surface are beginning to provide methods for estimating important ecosystem variables at large scales. Ecologists attempting to generalize across landscapes have made extensive use of models and remote sensing technology. The success of such ventures is dependent on merging insights and expertise from two distinct fields. Ecologists must provide the understanding of how well models emulate important biological variables and their interactions; experts in remote sensing must provide the biophysical interpretation of complex optical reflectance and radar backscatter data
Alkali oxide-tantalum, niobium and antimony oxide ionic conductors
The phase equilibrium relations of four systems were investigated in detail. These consisted of sodium and potassium antimonates with antimony oxide and tantalum and niobium oxide with rubidium oxide as far as the ratio 4Rb2O:llB2O5 (B=Nb, Ta). The ternary system NaSbO3-Sb2O4-NaF was investigated extensively to determine the actual composition of the body centered cubic sodium antimonate. Various other binary and ternary oxide systems involving alkali oxides were examined in lesser detail. The phases synthesized were screened by ion exchange methods to determine mobility of the mobility of the alkali ion within the niobium, tantalum or antimony oxide (fluoride) structural framework. Five structure types warranted further investigation; these structure types are (1) hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB), (2) pyrochlore, (3) the hybrid HTB-pyrochlore hexagonal ordered phases, (4) body centered cubic antimonates and (5) 2K2O:3Nb2O5. Although all of these phases exhibit good ion exchange properties only the pyrochlore was prepared with Na(+) ions as an equilibrium phase and as a low porosity ceramic. Sb(+3) in the channel interferes with ionic conductivity in this case, although relatively good ionic conductivity was found for the metastable Na(+) ion exchanged analogs of RbTa2O5F and KTaWO6 pyrochlore phases

Forests, fresh perspectives from ecosystem analysis : proceedings of the 40th annual Biology Colloquium
Over the last decade a new perspective on how forest ecosystems operate has emerged. Ecosystems appear much more flexÂible than we once thought. Even the most persistent is still evolving in composition. Yet for all their diversity, very similar processes are seen as operating in all forests, providing a point for comparative studies. A more balanced time perspective brings a greater appreciation of the inÂfrequent but dominating events that shape the course of ecosystem development. Through joint studies of forests and streams we see new roles for living and dead comÂponents of both ecosystems.
For the 40th annual Biology Colloquim held April 27-28 1979 at Oregon State University, a select group of scientists was invited to share this new perspective on forest ecosystems with a wider audience. The colloquium papers are grouped into three sections within this volume. The first section (chapters 1-3) revises classical theories on community structure, succession, and ecosystems. The second section (chapÂters 4-8) examines in detail how forest canopies, soil microbes, and root systems operate as almost independent subsystems. The final section (chapters 9-12) focuses on the impact of the different materials-Âlogs and leaves, soil and sediments, water and minerals--that move through forests and into stream ecosystems. Although each section is distinct in scope, they share a common link of matter and energy flow.
