Calculations of giant magnetoresistance in Fe/Cr trilayers using layer potentials determined from {\it ab-initio} methods
The ab initio full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method
explicitly designed for the slab geometry was employed to elucidate the
physical origin of the layer potentials for the trilayers nFe/3Cr/nFe(001),
where n is the number of Fe monolayers. The thickness of the transition-metal
ferromagnet has been ranged from up to n=8 while the spacer thickness was
fixed to 3 monolayers. The calculated potentials were inserted in the
Fuchs-Sondheimer formalism in order to calculate the giant magnetoresistance
(GMR) ratio. The predicted GMR ratio was compared with the experiment and the
oscillatory behavior of the GMR as a function of the ferromagnetic layer
thickness was discussed in the context of the layer potentials. The reported
results confirm that the interface monolayers play a dominant role in the

Nonhuman animals as symbols in the #BlackLivesMatter protests of 2020
This is the final version. Available on open access from Brill via the DOI in this record. Racial uprisings often include animalized commentary and symbolic use of nonhuman animal bodies. This paper highlights some of the nonhuman animal bodies observed during the #BlackLivesMatter protests within the United States in 2020 - specifically, the use of pig, horse, and dog bodies during street protests. Displays of pigs carry with them a racially rife past in the United States. This history harmed protesters during #BlackLivesMatter protests, being described as suffering "like animals,"and the use of "pig"as an epithet for the police is explored. For the Black Cowboys who joined the protests on horseback, the physical presence of their horses amplified their message, symbolized a shift in their freedom, and positioned them eye-to-eye with the mounted police officers. The use of dog bodies within politics, how they amplified political messages as "sign-carrying vehicles,"and the dangers for them and others in protests are addressed

A device for auricular electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve was developed. The advantage of the developed product is the possibility of changing the shape of the stimulation signal, setting the duration of the stimulation session and monitoring the impedance of the load during the stimulation procedure

Semiclassical Description of Exotic Nuclear Shapes
Exotic nuclear structures such as bubbles and tori are analyzed through
semiclassical extended Thomas-Fermi calculations with the Skyrme force SkM.
The variational equations for neutron and proton densities are solved fully
self-consistently in spherical (bubbles) and cylindrical (tori) symmetries. The
possible existence of bubble configurations in some astrophysical scenarios is
discussed. The stability of toroidal structures against change of quadrupole

FACT -- the First Cherenkov Telescope using a G-APD Camera for TeV Gamma-ray Astronomy (HEAD 2010)
Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiodes (G-APD) bear the potential to significantly
improve the sensitivity of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT). We are
currently building the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) by refurbishing
an old IACT with a mirror area of 9.5 square meters and construct a new, fine
pixelized camera using novel G-APDs. The main goal is to evaluate the
performance of a complete system by observing very high energy gamma-rays from
the Crab Nebula. This is an important field test to check the feasibility of
G-APD-based cameras to replace at some time the PMT-based cameras of planned
future IACTs like AGIS and CTA. In this article, we present the basic design of

FACT -- The G-APD revolution in Cherenkov astronomy
Since two years, the FACT telescope is operating on the Canary Island of La
Palma. Apart from its purpose to serve as a monitoring facility for the
brightest TeV blazars, it was built as a major step to establish solid state
photon counters as detectors in Cherenkov astronomy. The camera of the First
G-APD Cherenkov Telesope comprises 1440 Geiger-mode avalanche photo diodes
(G-APD), equipped with solid light guides to increase the effective light
collection area of each sensor. Since no sense-line is available, a special
challenge is to keep the applied voltage stable although the current drawn by
the G-APD depends on the flux of night-sky background photons significantly
varying with ambient light conditions. Methods have been developed to keep the
temperature and voltage dependent response of the G-APDs stable during
operation. As a cross-check, dark count spectra with high statistics have been
taken under different environmental conditions. In this presentation, the
project, the developed methods and the experience from two years of operation
of the first G-APD based camera in Cherenkov astronomy under changing

FACT - The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope: Status and Results
The First G-APD Cherenkov telescope (FACT) is the first telescope using
silicon photon detectors (G-APD aka. SiPM). It is built on the mount of the
HEGRA CT3 telescope, still located at the Observatorio del Roque de los
Muchachos, and it is successfully in operation since Oct. 2011. The use of
Silicon devices promises a higher photon detection efficiency, more robustness
and higher precision than photo-multiplier tubes. The FACT collaboration is
investigating with which precision these devices can be operated on the
long-term. Currently, the telescope is successfully operated from remote and
robotic operation is under development. During the past months of operation,
the foreseen monitoring program of the brightest known TeV blazars has been
carried out, and first physics results have been obtained including a strong
flare of Mrk501. An instantaneous flare alert system is already in a testing
phase. This presentation will give an overview of the project and summarize its
goals, status and first results
Nuclear Skins and Halos in the Mean-Field Theory
Nuclei with large neutron-to-proton ratios have neutron skins, which manifest
themselves in an excess of neutrons at distances greater than the radius of the
proton distribution. In addition, some drip-line nuclei develop very extended
halo structures. The neutron halo is a threshold effect; it appears when the
valence neutrons occupy weakly bound orbits. In this study, nuclear skins and
halos are analyzed within the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov
and relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theories for spherical shapes. It is
demonstrated that skins, halos, and surface thickness can be analyzed in a
model-independent way in terms of nucleonic density form factors. Such an
analysis allows for defining a quantitative measure of the halo size. The
systematic behavior of skins, halos, and surface thickness in even-even nuclei

1-Year COMBO stent outcomes stratified by the PARIS bleeding prediction score: From the MASCOT registry
Background: The COMBO stent is a biodegradable-polymer sirolimus-eluting stent with endothelial progenitor cell capture technology for faster endothelialization. Objective: We analyzed COMBO stent outcomes in relation to bleeding risk using the PARIS bleeding score. Methods: MASCOT was an international registry of all-comers undergoing attempted COMBO stent implantation. We stratified patients as low bleeding-risk (LBR) for PARIS score 3 based on baseline age, body mass index, anemia, current smoking, chronic kidney disease and need for triple therapy. Primary endpoint was 1-year target lesion failure (TLF), composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI) not clearly attributed to a non-target vessel or clinically-driven target lesion revascularization (TLR). Bleeding was adjudicated using the Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) definition. Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) cessation was independently adjudicated. Results: The study included 56% (n = 1270) LBR and 44% (n = 1009) IHBR patients. Incidence of 1-year TLF was higher in IHBR patients (4.1% vs. 2.6%, p = 0.047) driven by cardiac death (1.7% vs. 0.7%, p = 0.029) with similar rates of MI (1.8% vs. 1.1%, p = 0.17), TLR (1.5% vs. 1.6%, p = 0.89) and definite/ probable stent thrombosis (1.2% vs. 0.6%, p = 0.16). Incidence of 1-year major BARC 3 or 5 bleeding was significantly higher in IHBR patients (2.3% vs. 0.9%, p = 0.0094), as was the incidence of DAPT cessation (29.3% vs. 22.8%, p < 0.01), driven by physician-guided discontinuation. Conclusions: Patients with intermediate-to-high PARIS bleeding risk in the MASCOT registry experienced greater incidence of 1-year TLF, major bleeding and DAPT cessation than LBR patients, without significant differences in stent thrombosis
