Error analysis of householder transformations as applied to the standard and generalized eigenvalue problems
Backward error analyses of the application of Householder transformations to both the standard and the generalized eigenvalue problems are presented. The analysis for the standard eigenvalue problem determines the error from the application of an exact similarity transformation, and the analysis for the generalized eigenvalue problem determines the error from the application of an exact equivalence transformation. Bounds for the norms of the resulting perturbation matrices are presented and compared with existing bounds when known
Effects of spacecraft reflections on RF interferometer position location accuracy
This report describes one of three study tasks related to the application of an RF interferometer aboard a low-orbiting spacecraft to determine the location of ground-based transmitters. Computer modeling was used to estimate the error in the measured signal angle-of-arrival caused by reflection and diffraction off the spacecraft. Existing computer codes (NEC-BSC) were modified and used to determine the perturbation, due to the spacecraft, in the phase difference between two interferometer antennas, suspended on either side of the spacecraft. This phase perturbation was found as a function of the angle-of-arrival of the signal from a far-field source. The spacecraft antennas were assumed to be circularly polarized with a cardioid pattern. It was found that the perturbation was as much 12.4 deg within the + or - 60 deg field-of-view. This suggests that phase calibration and correction of phase measurements are essential for precision position location using this technique
A qualitative exploration of consumers’ perceived impacts, behavioural reactions, and future reflections of the EU Tobacco Products Directive (2017) as applied to electronic cigarettes
Background: Electronic cigarette regulations included in the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), Article 20, implemented in Europe by May 2017, aimed to improve safety for e-cigarette consumers, and prevent uptake among non-smokers, particularly young people. Before implementation, there were significant concerns from consumers, industry, and some in the scientific community about the potential negative impact of the TPD on people using e-cigarettes to stay stopped from smoking. To date, there is limited evidence on how the TPD has affected consumers. This study aimed to add insight into how consumers perceived and experienced the regulations. Methods: Qualitative data, collected between March 2018 and March 2019, relating to participant views of the TPD were extracted from 160 interviews/extended surveys of e-cigarette consumers as part of a wider study into e-cigarette use trajectories (ECtra study). Data were thematically analysed. Results: Awareness of the TPD amongst consumers was not universal. Participants’ smoking behaviour did not appear to be influenced by the legislation. Participants were reassured by manufacturing regulations and requirements for ingredients labels. Participants responded negatively to changes perceived to cause inconvenience and extra plastic waste. The product restrictions prompted some participants to purchase non-compliant products illegally, potentially putting their safety at risk. Conclusions: E-cigarette regulation should focus on ensuring product safety. Raising awareness of the TPD amongst consumers and smokers could be beneficial
Highly Ionised Gas as a Diagnostic of the Inner NLR
The spectra of AGN from the ultraviolet to the near infrared, exhibit
emission lines covering a wide range of ionisation states, from neutral species
such as [O I] 6300A, up to [Fe XIV] 5303A. Here we report on some recent
studies of the properties of highly ionised lines (HILs), plus two case studies
of individual objects. Future IFU observations at high spatial and good
spectral resolution, will probe the excitation and kinematics of the gas in the
zone between the extended NLR and unresolved BLR. Multi-component SED fitting
can be used to link the source of photoionisation with the strengths and ratios

Efficiency of N use by wheat as a function of influx and efflux of NO sub 3
Since N assimilation is one of the most costly functions of a plant, its efflux before assimilation results in a serious energy cost and loss in efficiency which could decrease yields. Efficient crop production is critical to the Controlled Ecological Life-Support System (CELSS). The objective is to determine the extent of efflux of the N species NO3(-), NH4(+), NO2(-), and urea after uptake, and possible means of regulation. It was found that NO3(-) efflux became serious as its substrate level increased. Efflux/Influx (E/I) of 3NO3(-) was greater in darkness (35 pct) than in light (14 pct) and the ratio greatly increased with increased substrate NO3(-), (up to 45 pct at 10 mM). It seems advantageous to use the lowest possible nutrient concentration of NO3(-). The feasibility of using ClO3(-) as a trapping agent (competitive inhibitor of NO3(-) uptake) for effluxed NO3(-) was assessed and its toxicity determined
On The Orbital Evolution of Jupiter Mass Protoplanet Embedded in A Self-Gravity Disk
We performed a series of hydro-dynamic simulations to investigate the orbital
migration of a Jovian planet embedded in a proto-stellar disk. In order to take
into account of the effect of the disk's self gravity, we developed and adopted
an \textbf{Antares} code which is based on a 2-D Godunov scheme to obtain the
exact Reimann solution for isothermal or polytropic gas, with non-reflecting
boundary conditions. Our simulations indicate that in the study of the runaway
(type III) migration, it is important to carry out a fully self consistent
treatment of the gravitational interaction between the disk and the embedded
planet. Through a series of convergence tests, we show that adequate numerical
resolution, especially within the planet's Roche lobe, critically determines
the outcome of the simulations. We consider a variety of initial conditions and
show that isolated, non eccentric protoplanet planets do not undergo type III
migration. We attribute the difference between our and previous simulations to
the contribution of a self consistent representation of the disk's self
gravity. Nevertheless, type III migration cannot be completely suppressed and
its onset requires finite amplitude perturbations such as that induced by
planet-planet interaction. We determine the radial extent of type III migration
as a function of the disk's self gravity.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure

Arctic marine climate of the early nineteenth century
The climate of the early nineteenth century is likely to have been significantly cooler than that of today, as it was a period of low solar activity (the Dalton minimum) and followed a series of large volcanic eruptions. Proxy reconstructions of the temperature of the period do not agree well on the size of the temperature change, so other observational records from the period are particularly valuable. Weather observations have been extracted from the reports of the noted whaling captain William Scoresby Jr., and from the records of a series of Royal Navy expeditions to the Arctic, preserved in the UK National Archives. They demonstrate that marine climate in 1810 - 1825 was marked by consistently cold summers, with abundant sea-ice. But although the period was significantly colder than the modern average, there was considerable variability: in the Greenland Sea the summers following the Tambora eruption (1816 and 1817) were noticeably warmer, and had less sea-ice coverage, than the years immediately preceding them; and the sea-ice coverage in Lancaster Sound in 1819 and 1820 was low even by modern standards. © 2010 Author(s)
