Chinese television between propaganda and entertainment: socialist traditions, marketisation and popular TV dramas, 1992â2017
China's economic reforms and opening to the world since 1978 have profoundly changed the operation and function of Chinese television. Following the accelerated market reforms from 1992, the production of Chinese TV programmes has become increasingly driven by ratings and oriented towards popular entertainment. Within this context, this project examines how Chinese television has evolved over recent decades in response to wider political, economic and cultural changes in China, with a focus on prime-time television dramas broadcast between 1992 and 2017. It situates the analysis of TV dramas within the spectrum of two poles â propaganda and entertainment, aiming to explore how these TV programmes have continued to serve the propaganda imperatives of the Party-state, while at the same time responding to audience demands regarding entertainment.In order to map the changes and continuities exemplified by Chinese TV dramas, this project has adopted a mixed-method approach. This approach includes a systematic quantitative analysis to delineate long-term trends, and four qualitative case studies to establish a more thorough understanding of the detailed transformation in Chinese television. The thesis demonstrates that while Chinese television has become increasingly driven by commercial values that prioritise audience interests and popular elements, television entertainment in China still needs to align with official ideological lines. In the meantime, varying degrees of political supervision have been identified from different levels of TV stations, and the Party-state has actively engaged in promoting its own agenda through Chinese television entertainment. These have shown an increasingly complex picture of socialist television in the new era.In these ways, this project sheds light on the interplay between political propaganda and commercial trends within the Chinese television system over the past two decades and a half. It is intended to contribute to existing studies on the relationship between propaganda and popular entertainment, and to the analyses of propaganda in television drama. It would also facilitate a systematic understanding of socialist television contexts, bridging the east-west divide on the perceptions of contemporary socialist television culture.</div
A socialist superwoman for the new era: Chinese television and the changing ideals of femininity
This paper examines changing representations of women in Chinese television dramas
since the early 1990s and interprets them within a framework of global socialist media
cultures, considering both domestic developments and transnational trends. Drawing on
the analysis of three selected dramas, it traces the trajectory of televised femininity from
exemplary socialist worker-citizens devoted to family and community, to more
individualized middle-class urbanites. It is tempting to see this transformation as an
outcome of Chinaâs integration into the global capitalist economy, the attendant retreat
of the party-state from the private realm, and the infusion of Western cultural gender
ideals. Yet this interpretation downplays important continuities, and misses intriguing
parallels with TV dramas produced in socialist Eastern Europe. The argument pays
particular attention to the enduring appeal of the socialist-style superwoman who
shoulders the double burden of a professional career and unpaid domestic work while
also acting as a discerning citizen-consumer
Human-Robot Interaction Based on Gaze Gestures for the Drone Teleoperation
Teleoperation has been widely used to perform tasks in dangerous and unreachable environments by replacing humans with controlled agents. The idea of human-robot interaction (HRI) is very important in teleoperation. Conventional HRI input devices include keyboard, mouse and joystick, etc. However, they are not suitable for handicapped users or people with disabilities. These devices also increase the mental workload of normal users due to simultaneous operation of multiple HRI input devices by hand. Hence, HRI based on gaze tracking with an eye tracker is presented in this study. The selection of objects is of great importance and occurs at a high frequency during HRI control. This paper introduces gaze gestures as an object selection strategy into HRI for drone teleoperation. In order to test and validate the performance of gaze gestures selection strategy, we evaluate objective and subjective measurements, respectively. Drone control performance, including mean task completion time and mean error rate, are the objective measurements. The subjective measurement is the analysis of participant perception. The results showed gaze gestures selection strategy has a great potential as an additional HRI for use in agent teleoperation
Personalize Wayfinding Information for Fire Responders based on Virtual Reality Training Data
Modern buildings with increasing complexity can cause serious difficulties for first responders in emergency wayfinding. While real-time data collection and information analytics become easier in indoor wayfinding, a new challenge has arisen: cognitive overload due to information redundancy. Standardized and universal spatial information systems are still widely used in emergency wayfinding, ignoring first respondersâ individual difference in information intake. This paper proposes and tests the theoretical framework of a spatial information systems for first responders, which reflects their individual difference in information preference and helps reduce the cognitive load in line of duty. The proposed method includes the use of Virtual Reality (VR) experiments to simulate real world buildings, and the modeling of first respondersâ reactions to different information formats and contents in simulated wayfinding tasks. This work is expected to set a foundation of future spatial information system that correctly and effectively responds to first respondersâ needs

Near-Infrared and Visible Photoactivation to Uncage Carbon Monoxide from an Aqueous-Soluble PhotoCORM.
Multiphoton excitation allows one to access high energy excited states and perform valuable tasks in biological systems using tissue penetrating near-infrared (NIR) light. Here, we describe new photoactive manganese tricarbonyl complexes incorporating the ligand 4'-p-N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino-benzyl-2,2':6',2âł-terpyridine (TPYOH), which can serve as an antenna for two photon NIR excitation. Solutions of Mn(CO)3(TPYOH)X (X = Br- or CF3SO3-) complexes are very photoactive toward CO release under visible light excitation (405 nm, 451 nm). The same responses were also triggered by multiphoton excitation at 750 and 800 nm. In this context, we discuss the potential applications of these complexes as visible/NIR light photoactivated carbon monoxide releasing moieties (photoCORMs). We also report the isolation and crystal structures of the TPYOH complexes Mn(TPYOH)Cl2 and [Mn(TPYOH)2](CF3SO3)2, to illustrate a possible photolysis product(s)

Ice Lithography for Nano-Devices
We report the successful application of a new approach, ice lithography (IL), to fabricate nanoscale devices. The entire IL process takes place inside a modified scanning electron microscope (SEM), where a vapor-deposited film of water ice serves as a resist for e-beam lithography, greatly simplifying and streamlining device fabrication. We show that labile nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes can be safely imaged in an SEM when coated in ice. The ice film is patterned at high e-beam intensity and serves as a mask for lift-off without the device degradation and contamination associated with e-beam imaging and polymer resist residues. An easy iris center detection method for eye gaze tracking system
Iris center detection accuracy has great impact on eye gaze tracking system performance. This paper proposes an easy and efficient iris center detection method based on modeling the geometric relationship between the detected rough iris center and the two corners of the eye. The method fully considers four states of iris within the eye region, i.e. center, left, right, and upper. The proposed active edge detection algorithm is utilized to extract iris edge points for ellipse fitting. In addition, this paper also presents a predicted edge point algorithm to solve the decrease in ellipse fitting accuracy, when part of the iris becomes hidden from rolling into a nasal or temporal eye corner. The evaluated result of the method on our eye database shows the global average accuracy of 94.3%. Compared with existing methods, our method achieves the highest iris center detection accuracy. Additionally, in order to test the performance of the proposed method in gaze tracking, this paper presents the results of gaze estimation achieved by our eye gaze tracking system
