    β-Catenin/Tcf-4 signaling pathway plays important roles in colorectal tumorigenesis. RT-PCR, western blotting and immunoprecipitation were used to study the effects of curcumin on β-catenin/Tcf-4 signaling pathway in HT-29 cells. Treatment of curcumin could induce cleavage of β-catenin and the cleavage could be inhibited by caspase inhibitors. The association of β-catenin with Tcf-4 in nucleus could be inhibited by curcumin. The expression of c-myc and cyclinD1 was downregulated by curcumin, which could not be blocked by Z-DEVD-FMK. The results showed curcumin could induce thecleavage of β-catenin by activition of caspases and downregulate the activity of β-catenin/Tcf signaling pathway independent of the caspases in HT-29 cells

    Interference in transport through double barriers in interacting quantum wires

    We investigate interference effects of the backscattering current through a double-barrier structure in an interacting quantum wire attached to noninteracting leads. Depending on the interaction strength and the location of the barriers, the backscattering current exhibits different oscillation and scaling characteristics with the applied voltage in the strong and weak interaction cases. However, in both cases, the oscillation behaviors of the backscattering current are mainly determined by the quantum mechanical interference due to the existence of the double barriers.Comment: 6 pages, 3 fig

    The Opioid Crisis, Employee Health Capital, and Corporate Information Production

    This study examines the effect of employee health on corporate information production. Utilizing exposure to opioid abuse as the proxy for employee health, we find that firms headquartered in counties of high opioid prescription rate produce significantly less accurate management earnings forecasts. This result is robust to controlling for other dimensions of human capital and to utilizing the effective anti-opioid legislation across states as a plausibly exogenous variation that limits the prescriptions of opioid. The negative effect of opioid abuse is stronger for firms facing higher forecast difficulty, and is mitigated for firms with easier access to opioid treatment, for firms with superior employee welfare policies, and for firms with a corporate social responsibility (CSR) committee. We also show that managers delay earnings announcements and reduce forecast precision amidst high local opioid activity. Finally, we show that investors react less strongly to news in forecasts issued by firms located in high opioid areas, consistent with their recognition of the potential adverse effect of opioid abuse on information production within the firm

    Crack identification of functionally graded beams using continuous wavelet transform

    © 2018 Elsevier Ltd This paper proposes a new damage index for the crack identification of beams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) by using the wavelet analysis. The damage index is defined based on the position of the wavelet coefficient modulus maxima in the scale space. The crack is assumed to be an open edge crack and is modeled by a massless rotational spring. It is assumed that the material properties follow exponential distributions along the beam thickness direction. The Timoshenko beam theory is employed to derive the governing equations which are solved analytically to obtain the frequency and mode shape of cracked FGM beams. Then, we apply the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to the mode shapes of the cracked FGM beams. The locations of the cracks are determined from the sudden changes in the spatial variation of the damage index. An intensity factor, which relates to the size of the crack and the coefficient of the wavelet transform, is employed to estimate the crack depth. The effects of the crack size, the crack location and the Young's modulus ratio on the crack depth detection are investigated
