    Bayesian cross validation for gravitational-wave searches in pulsar-timing array data

    Gravitational-wave data analysis demands sophisticated statistical noise models in a bid to extract highly obscured signals from data. In Bayesian model comparison, we choose among a landscape of models by comparing their marginal likelihoods. However, this computation is numerically fraught and can be sensitive to arbitrary choices in the specification of parameter priors. In Bayesian cross validation, we characterize the fit and predictive power of a model by computing the Bayesian posterior of its parameters in a training dataset, and then use that posterior to compute the averaged likelihood of a different testing dataset. The resulting cross-validation scores are straightforward to compute; they are insensitive to prior tuning; and they penalize unnecessarily complex models that overfit the training data at the expense of predictive performance. In this article, we discuss cross validation in the context of pulsar-timing-array data analysis, and we exemplify its application to simulated pulsar data (where it successfully selects the correct spectral index of a stochastic gravitational-wave background), and to a pulsar dataset from the NANOGrav 11-year release (where it convincingly favors a model that represents a transient feature in the interstellar medium). We argue that cross validation offers a promising alternative to Bayesian model comparison, and we discuss its use for gravitational-wave detection, by selecting or refuting models that include a gravitational-wave component.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures.     During the First World War, anti-German sentiments manifested itself as riots in several occasions in London. Several explanations and interpretations were put forward by contemporary observers and later historians. This essay intends to provide a more balanced discourse on the causes of the anti-German riots. I will demonstrate that the popular anti-German violence was a mixed product of press propaganda and local grievance caused by food shortage and economic inflation. Moreover, while this essay does not aim to fully exonerate the British government, I will explain that in some instances, the role of authority was quite limited in terms of promoting anti-German hatred

    Effectiveness of folic acid fortified flour for prevention of neural tube defects in a high risk region

    Despite efforts to tackle folate deficiency and Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) through folic acid fortification, its implementation is still lacking where it is needed most, highlighting the need for studies that evaluate the effectiveness of folic acid fortified wheat flour in a poor, rural, high-risk, NTD region of China. One of the most affected regions, Shanxi Province, was selected as a case study. A community intervention was carried out in which 16,648 women of child-bearing age received fortified flour (eight villages) and a control group received ordinary flour (three villages). NTD birth prevalence and biological indicators were measured two years after program initiation at endline only. The effect on the NTD burden was calculated using the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) method. In the intervention group, serum folate level was higher than in the control group. NTDs in the intervention group were 68.2% lower than in the control group (OR = 0.313, 95% CI = 0.207-0473, p < 0.001). In terms of DALYs, burden in intervention group was approximately 58.5% lower than in the control group. Flour fortification was associated with lower birth prevalence and burden of NTDs in economically developing regions with a high risk of NTDs. The positive findings confirm the potential of fortification when selecting an appropriate food vehicle and target region. As such, this study provides support for decision makers aiming for the implementation of (mandatory) folic acid fortification in China

    The performance of a novel latching-type electromagnetic actuator for single-port laparoscopic surgery

    This paper reports on the performance evaluation of a novel latching-type electromagnetic actuator which is designed to be embedded at selected joints along single-port laparoscopic surgical instruments (SLS). The aim of this actuator is to allow these instruments to become articulated with a push of a button in order to provide the optimum angulation required during SLS operations. This new actuator is comprised of electromagnetic coil elements, soft magnetic frames and a permanent magnet. Unlike conventional electromagnetic actuators, latching-type electromagnetic actuators could maintain their positions at either end of the actuation stroke without any power application requirement. In the current design, magnetic attraction forces initiated between the permanent magnet and the magnetic frame are utilised to lock the position of the actuator whilst a certain angulation position of the actuator is achieved as a result of the magnetic repulsion forces established between the permanent magnet and the coil elements. The performance of the new actuator in terms of the output force, maximum angulation and patient’s safety, was evaluated experimentally and the results were found to compare well with those acquired numerically using finite element methods. This actuator was seen to exhibit sufficient actuation forces and hence, it was capable of providing adaptable angulation characteristics for SLS tools. Finally, thermal evaluation of the actuator’s operation was conducted, which was found to be within safety limits specified by clinicians

    A Posteriori Error Estimation and Adaptive Algorithm for Atomistic/Continuum Coupling in Two Dimensions

    Atomistic/continuum coupling methods aim to achieve optimal balance between accuracy and efficiency. Adaptivity is the key for the efficient implementation of such methods. In this paper, we carry out a rigorous a posteriori analysis of the residual, the stability constant, and the error bound, for a consistent atomistic/continuum coupling method in 2D. We design and implement the corresponding adaptive mesh refinement algorithm, and the convergence rate with respect to degrees of freedom is optimal compare with a priori error estimates
