    Pileup Behavior in Sharp Nanoindentation of AISI 1045 Steel

    AbstractExperimental measurements have been used to investigate the pileup behavior during nanoindentation with a sharp indenter. The AISI 1045 steels treated by quenching and annealing were examined. The results show that during sharp nanoindentation process, the amount of pileup is related to the residual stress state, the indentation depth and the work hardening. The quenched steel with compressive residual stress will tend to pile up, and the stress-free annealed steel can decrease the pileup height. It is found that the pileup height gradually increases for the two steels as the indentation depth becomes larger. It is also shown that the low work hardening of the two steels can also result in the pileup deformation

    'Candidatus Liberibacter' species are insect-transmitted, phloem-limited α-Proteobacteria in the order of Rhizobiales. The citrus industry is facing significant challenges due to huanglongbing, associated with infection from 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (Las). In order to gain greater insight into 'Ca. Liberibacter' biology and genetic diversity, we have performed genome sequencing and comparative analyses of diverse 'Ca. Liberibacter' species, including those that can infect citrus. Our phylogenetic analysis differentiates 'Ca. Liberibacter' species and Rhizobiales in separate clades and suggests stepwise evolution from a common ancestor splitting first into nonpathogenic Liberibacter crescens followed by diversification of pathogenic 'Ca. Liberibacter' species. Further analysis of Las genomes from different geographical locations revealed diversity among isolates from the United States. Our phylogenetic study also indicates multiple Las introduction events in California and spread of the pathogen from Florida to Texas. Texan Las isolates were closely related, while Florida and Asian isolates exhibited the most genetic variation. We have identified conserved Sec translocon (SEC)-dependent effectors likely involved in bacterial survival and virulence of Las and analysed their expression in their plant host (citrus) and insect vector (Diaphorina citri). Individual SEC-dependent effectors exhibited differential expression patterns between host and vector, indicating that Las uses its effector repertoire to differentially modulate diverse organisms. Collectively, this work provides insights into the evolution of 'Ca. Liberibacter' species, the introduction of Las in the United States and identifies promising Las targets for disease management

    Magnetic field and pressure effects on charge density wave, superconducting, and magnetic states in Lu5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10} and Er5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10}

    We have studied the charge-density-wave (CDW) state for the superconducting Lu5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10} and the antiferromagnetic Er5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10} as variables of temperature, magnetic field, and hydrostatic pressure. For Lu5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10}, the application of pressure strongly suppresses the CDW phase but weakly enhances the superconducting phase. For Er5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10}, the incommensurate CDW state is pressure independent and the commensurate CDW state strongly depends on the pressure, whereas the antiferromagnetic ordering is slightly depressed by applying pressure. In addition, Er5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10} shows negative magnetoresistance at low temperatures, compared with the positive magnetoresistance of Lu5_5Ir4_4Si10_{10}.Comment: 12 pages, including 6 figure

    Potential loss of nutrients from different rearing strategies for fattening pigs on pasture

    Nutrient load and distribution on pasture were investigated with fattening pigs that: 1) spend a proportion of or their entire life on pasture, 2) were fed either restrictively or ad libitum, and 3) were weaned at different times of the year. The N and P retention in pigs decreased the longer they were kept on pasture. The contents of soil inorganic N and exchangeable K were significantly raised compared to the soil outside the enclosures but with no differences between treatments. Pig grazing did not affect extractable soil P. Regular moving of huts, feeding and water troughs was effective in ensuring that nutrients were more evenly distributed on the paddocks. Grass cover, as determined by spectral reflectance, was not related to the experimental treatments but only to time of year. During spring and summer, grass was present in parts of the paddocks, whereas during autumn and winter the pigs kept grass cover below 10%. Fattening pigs on pasture carries a high risk of nutrient loss and it is concluded that the most environmentally acceptable way of keeping fattening pigs on pasture involves a combination of reduced dietary N intake, reduced stocking rate and seasonal rather than all year production

    Robust H-infinity filtering for 2-D systems with intermittent measurements

    This paper is concerned with the problem of robust H∞ filtering for uncertain two-dimensional (2-D) systems with intermittent measurements. The parameter uncertainty is assumed to be of polytopic type, and the measurements transmission is assumed to be imperfect, which is modeled by a stochastic variable satisfying the Bernoulli random binary distribution. Our attention is focused on the design of an H∞ filter such that the filtering error system is stochastically stable and preserves a guaranteed H∞ performance. This problem is solved in the parameter-dependent framework, which is much less conservative than the quadratic approach. By introducing some slack matrix variables, the coupling between the positive definite matrices and the system matrices is eliminated, which greatly facilitates the filter design procedure. The corresponding results are established in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which can be easily tested by using standard numerical software.     Temperature dependence of Vortex Charges in High Temperature Superconductors

    Using a model Hamiltonian with d-wave superconductivity and competing antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions, the temperature (T) dependence of the vortex charge in high T_c superconductors is investigated by numerically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The strength of the induced AF order inside the vortex core is T dependent. The vortex charge could be negative when the AF order with sufficient strength is present at low temperatures. At higher temperatures, the AF order may be completely suppressed and the vortex charge becomes positive. A first order like transition in the T dependent vortex charge is seen near the critical temperature T_{AF}. For underdoped sample, the spatial profiles of the induced spin-density wave and charge-density wave orders could have stripe like structures at T < T_s, and change to two-dimensional isotropic ones at T > T_s.     Scaling Behavior of Anomalous Hall Effect and Longitudinal Nonlinear Response in High-Tc Superconductors

    Based on existing theoretical model and by considering our longitudinal nonlinear response function, we derive a nonliear equation in which the mixed state Hall resistivity can be expressed as an analytical function of magnetic field, temperature and applied current. This equation enables one to compare quantitatively the experimental data with theoretical model. We also find some new scaling relations of the temperature and field dependency of Hall resistivity. The comparison between our theoretical curves and experimental data shows a fair agreement.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Spectral isolation of naturally reductive metrics on simple Lie groups

    We show that within the class of left-invariant naturally reductive metrics MNat⁥(G)\mathcal{M}_{\operatorname{Nat}}(G) on a compact simple Lie group GG, every metric is spectrally isolated.
