Assessment of crash fire hazard of LH sub 2 fueled aircraft
The relative safety of passengers in LH2 - fueled aircraft, as well as the safety of people in areas surrounding a crash scene, has been evaluated in an analytical study. Four representative circumstances were postulated involving a transport aircraft in which varying degrees of severity of damage were sustained. Potential hazard to the passengers and to the surroundings posed by the spilled fuel was evaluated for each circumstance. Corresponding aircraft fueled with liquid methane, Jet A, and JP-4 were also studied in order to make comparisons of the relative safety. The four scenarios which were used to provide a basis for the evaluation included: (1) a small fuel leak internal to the aircraft, (2) a survivable crash in which a significant quantity of fuel is spilled in a radial pattern as a result of impact with a stationary object while taxiing at fairly low speed, (3) a survivable crash in which a significant quantity of fuel is spilled in an axial pattern as a result of impact during landing, and (4) a non-survivable crash in which a massive fuel spill occurs instantaneously
Geochemical signatures in otoliths record natal origins of American shad

We used geochemical signatures in the otoliths of American shad Alosa sapidissima to determine natal origins and estimate rates of straying among river-specific populations along the U.S. Atlantic coast. Stable isotope (δ13C, δ18O and 87Sr:86Sr) and elemental (Mg:Ca, Mn:Ca, Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca) signatures in otoliths of juvenile American shad from rivers from Georgia to New Hampshire varied significantly, allowing for an average of 91% cross-validated accuracy when classifying individual fish to their natal rivers. We also found significant interannual variability in the geochemical signatures from several rivers, due largely to differences in δ18O values among years. We then used the ground-truthed geochemical signatures in the otoliths of juvenile American shad to identify the natal origins of spawning adults in the York River system in Virginia. Approximately 6% of the spawning adults collected in the York River were strays from other rivers. Of the remaining fish, 79% were spawned in the Mattaponi River and 21% in the Pamunkey River. The combined results of this and other recent studies suggest that although most American shad spawning in the York River were homing to their natal river, there was much less fidelity to individual tributaries. Direct observation of molecular cooperativity near the glass transition
We describe direct observations of molecular cooperativity near the glass
transition in poly-vinyl-acetate (PVAc), through nanometer-scale probing of
dielectric fluctuations. Molecular clusters switched spontaneously between two
to four distinct configurations, producing complex random-telegraph-signals
(RTS). Analysis of the RTS and their power spectra shows that individual
clusters exhibit both transient dynamical heterogeneity and non-exponential

Target Zones in History and Theory: Lessons from an Austro-Hungarian Experiment (1896-1914)
The first known experiment with an exchange rate band took place in Austria-
Hungary between 1896 and 1914. The rationale for introducing this policy rested
on precisely those intuitions that the modern literature has emphasized: the band
was designed to secure both exchange rate stability and monetary policy
autonomy. However, unlike more recent experiences, such as the ERM, this
policy was not undermined by credibility problems. The episode provides an ideal
testing ground for some important ideas in modern macroeconomics: specifically,
can formal rules, when faithfully adhered to, provide policy makers with some
advantages such as short term autonomy? First, we find that a credible band has a
"microeconomic" influence on exchange rate stability. By reducing uncertainty, a
credible fluctuation band improves the quality of expectations, a channel that has been neglected in the modern literature. Second, we show that the standard test of the basic target zone model is flawed and develop an alternative methodology. We believe that these findings shed a new light on the economics of exchange rate bands
Heralded generation of entangled photon pairs
Entangled photons are a crucial resource for quantum communication and linear
optical quantum computation. Unfortunately, the applicability of many
photon-based schemes is limited due to the stochastic character of the photon
sources. Therefore, a worldwide effort has focused in overcoming the limitation
of probabilistic emission by generating two-photon entangled states conditioned
on the detection of auxiliary photons. Here we present the first heralded
generation of photon states that are maximally entangled in polarization with
linear optics and standard photon detection from spontaneous parametric
down-conversion. We utilize the down-conversion state corresponding to the
generation of three photon pairs, where the coincident detection of four
auxiliary photons unambiguously heralds the successful preparation of the
entangled state. This controlled generation of entangled photon states is a
significant step towards the applicability of a linear optics quantum network,
in particular for entanglement swapping, quantum teleportation, quantum
cryptography and scalable approaches towards photonics-based quantum computing
An examination of the effects of self-regulatory focus on the perception of the media richness: the case of email
Communication is a key element in organizations’ business success. The media richness theory and the channel expansion theory are two of the most influential theories regarding the selection and use of communication media in organizations; however, literature has focused little on the effects of self-regulation by managers and employees in these theories. To analyze these topics, this study develops an empirical investigation by gathering data from 600 managers and employees using a questionnaire. The results suggest that the perception of media richness is positively affected when the individual shows a promotion focus or strategy.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft
Macroscopic Interference Effects in Resonant Cavities
We investigate the possibility of interference effects induced by macroscopic
quantum-mechanical superpositions of almost othogonal coherent states - a
Schroedinger cats state - in a resonant microcavity. Despite the fact that a
single atom, used as a probe of the cat state, on the average only change the
mean number of photons by one unit, we show that this single atom can change
the system drastically. Interference between the initial and almost orthogonal
macroscopic quantum states of the radiation field can now take place.
Dissipation under current experimental conditions is taken into account and it
is found that this does not necessarily change the intereference effects
