Bottom and charm production at LHC and RHIC

    Get PDF
We study b¯b and c¯c production and the influence of nuclear shadowing at LHC and RHIC energies. We find a significant reduction in the production cross section of both charm and bottom at RHIC and LHC. Bound states such as and J/psi are suppressed by this reduction in the charm production cross sections. Therefore, J/psi suppression may not be useful as a signature for the quark gluon plasma. Common errors and clinical guidelines for manual muscle testing: "the arm test" and other inaccurate procedures

    Get PDF

Abstract

Background

The manual muscle test (MMT) has been offered as a chiropractic assessment tool that may help diagnose neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction. We contend that due to the number of manipulative practitioners using this test as part of the assessment of patients, clinical guidelines for the MMT are required to heighten the accuracy in the use of this tool.

Objective

To present essential operational definitions of the MMT for chiropractors and other clinicians that should improve the reliability of the MMT as a diagnostic test. Controversy about the usefulness and reliability of the MMT for chiropractic diagnosis is ongoing, and clinical guidelines about the MMT are needed to resolve confusion regarding the MMT as used in clinical practice as well as the evaluation of experimental evidence concerning its use.

Discussion

We expect that the resistance to accept the MMT as a reliable and valid diagnostic tool will continue within some portions of the manipulative professions if clinical guidelines for the use of MMT methods are not established and accepted. Unreliable assessments of this method of diagnosis will continue when non-standard MMT research papers are considered representative of the methods used by properly trained clinicians.

Conclusion

Practitioners who employ the MMT should use these clinical guidelines for improving their use of the MMT in their assessments of muscle dysfunction in patients with musculoskeletal pain.</p

    Utilization of Wave Energy

    Get PDF
When looking upon an aroused sea, many wonder how this seemingly large energy resource could be used. Inventive minds have gone to work on devices of all kinds - pumps and bellows, buoys, barges, and ramps, surface and subsurface siting, using alloys and plastics, etc. -generally based on mechanical or hydraulic principles. They would probably all work (if somebody would build them), but none thus far have been shown to do so profitably

Observation of enhanced X-ray emission from the CTTS AA Tau during a transit of an accretion funnel

AA Tau was observed for about 5h per XMM orbit (2 days) over 8 successive orbits, which covers two optical eclipse periods (8.2 days). The XMM optical/UV monitor simultaneously provided UV photometry with a ~15 min sampling rate. Some V-band photometry was also obtained from the ground during this period in order to determine the dates of the eclipses. Two X-ray and UV measurements were secured close to the center of the eclipse. The UV flux is the highest just before the eclipse starts and the lowest towards the end of it. We model the UV flux variations with a weekly modulation (inner disk eclipse), plus a daily modulation, which suggests a non-steady accretion. No eclipses are detected in X-rays. For one measurement, the X-ray count rate was nearly 50 times stronger than the minimum observed level, and the plasma temperature reached 60 MK, i.e., a factor of 2-3 higher than in the other observations. This X-ray event, observed close to the center of the optical eclipse, is interpreted as an X-ray flare. We identify the variable column density with the low-density accretion funnel flows blanketing the magnetosphere. The lack of X-ray eclipses indicates that X-ray emitting regions are located at high latitudes. Furthermore, the occurrence of a strong X-ray flare near the center of the optical eclipse suggests that the magnetically active areas are closely associated with the base of the high-density accretion funnel flow. We speculate that the impact of this free falling accretion flow onto the strong magnetic field of the stellar corona may boost the X-ray emission (abridged).Comment: 17 pages and 9 Figures.

Coronal properties of G-type stars in different evolutionary phases

We report on the analysis of XMM-Newton observations of three G-type stars in very different evolutionary phases: the weak-lined T Tauri star HD 283572, the Zero Age Main Sequence star EK Dra and the Hertzsprung-gap giant star 31 Com. They all have high X-ray luminosity (10^31 erg/s for HD 283572 and 31 Com and 10^30 erg/s for EK Dra). We compare the Emission Measure Distributions (EMDs) of these active coronal sources, derived from high-resolution XMM-Newton grating spectra, as well as the pattern of elemental abundances vs. First Ionization Potential (FIP). We also perform time-resolved spectroscopy of a flare detected by XMM from EK Dra. We interpret the observed EMDEMDs as the result of the emission of ensembles of magnetically confined loop-like structures with different apex temperatures. Our analysis indicates that the coronae of HD 283572 and 31 Com are very similar in terms of dominant coronal magnetic structures, in spite of differences in the evolutionary phase, surface gravity and metallicity. In the case of EK Dra the distribution appears to be slightly flatter than in the previous two cases, although the peak temperature is similar.Comment: 15 pages, 13 Postscript figures, to be published in A&

In südlichen Gefilden wächst so manches, was in Maßen genossen dem Wohlbefinden dient. Macht mediterrane Kost wirklich geistig fit

X-rays from accretion shocks in T Tauri stars: The case of BP Tau

We present an XMM-Newton observation of the classical T Tauri star BP Tau. In the XMM-Newton RGS spectrum the O {\sc vii} triplet is clearly detected with a very weak forbidden line indicating high plasma densities and/or a high UV flux environment. At the same time concurrent UV data point to a small hot spot filling factor suggesting an accretion funnel shock as the site of the X-ray and UV emission. Together with the X-ray data on TW Hya these new observations suggest such funnels to be a general feature in classical T Tauri stars.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted by A&
