    “Come you spirits unsex me!”: representations of the female executive in recent French film & fiction

    This article analyses the representation of female executives in a corpus of French films and novels produced from 2000 on. The corpus includes a mixture of male and female directors and novelists, all of whom adopt broadly centre-left or left-wing positions that are highly critical of contemporary forms of globalised, neo-liberal capitalism. Yet each of these directors and novelists depicts powerful female executives in highly conservative terms, figuring them as ‘unsexed’ beings who have turned their backs on their ‘natural’ destinies as wives and mothers. Further, these films and novels all imply that neo-liberal capitalism could be defeated if women were just to return to their traditional roles as wives and mothers and if the patriarchal nuclear family could once again perform its proper role as the foundation of community and national integrity. The corpus thus offers depictions of a range of powerful women who are, alternately, punished, pitied, or tamed. This being the price that must apparently be paid, if French national integrity is to be preserved from what are figured as the inherently foreign forces of globalised capitalism. Having offered an inventory of these deeply conservative tropes, the article concludes by suggesting some possible reasons for their dispiriting recurrence

    EFFECT OF GENETIC POTENTIAL AND FEED ON GROWTH OF YOUNG BULLS FOR FUTURE BREEDING

    Over a five-year period (1985-1989), a total of 239 bull calves (Angus=119, Hereford=120) were weaned and placed on summer pasture or fed grain concentrate in a feedlot for purpose of studying growth rate of body weight, hip height, and scrotal circumference over 189 days. Average daily gain [ADG, (final wt - weaning wt) / days in period] has been the standard measure of gwwth. However, this does not address how well a particular bull might have performed. ADG values were ranked at each measurement period (0, 21,49,77, 105, 133,161 and 189 days after weaning), changes in rank were determined for each bull, and the data analyzed. Bulls with higher genetic potential and those on the grain-fed diet showed positive rank changes over the 189 days. It was concluded that rank changes would be the best measure of superior growth for future breeding purposes. It ,vas discovered that a bull, poorly prepared (genetic or environmental) prior to weaning, could overcome this if placed on the grain-fed diet

    The City of Collective Melancholy: Revisiting Pamuk’s Istanbul

    This essay looks back upon Orhan Pamuk’s non-fiction book, Istanbul: Memories of a City (2003), and unpacks its multi-layered representation of the city as landscape. It is here that Pamuk pursues most overtly “the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city” which won him the 2006 Nobel Prize for Literature. Weaving personal memoir and historical essay into a unique narrative tapestry, Pamuk’s book explores a series of tensions that define the city’s image and identity; insider/outsider and East/West polarities, in particular, are tirelessly deconstructed. The essay examines Pamuk’s poetics and politics of memory in relation to works by other authors, notably Walter Benjamin. In conclusion, the new edition of Istanbul (2015) is discussed against the background of the social and spatial changes that have beset Turkey’s cultural capital in the interim

    IGR J18483-0311: a new intermediate supergiant fast X-ray transient

    IGR J18483-0311 is a high-mass X-ray binary recently discovered by INTEGRAL. Its periodic fast X-ray transient activity and its position in the Corbet diagram - although ambiguous - led to the conclusion that the source was a likely Be/X-ray binary (BeXB), even if a supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) nature could not be excluded. We aimed at identifying the companion star of IGR J18483-0311 to discriminate between the BeXB and the SFXT nature of the source. Optical and near-infrared photometry, as well as near-infrared spectroscopy of the companion star were performed to identify its spectral type. We also assembled and fitted its broad-band spectral energy distribution to derive its physical parameters. We show that the companion star of IGR J18483-0311 is an early-B supergiant, likely a B0.5Ia, and that its distance is about 3-4 kpc. The early-B supergiant nature of its companion star, as well as its fast X-ray transient activity point towards an SFXT nature of IGR J18483-0311. Nevertheless, the long duration and the periodicity of its outbursts, as well as its high level of quiescence, are consistent with IGR J18483-0311 being an intermediate SFXT, in between classical supergiant X-ray binaries (SGXBs) characterised by small and circular orbits, and classical SFXTs with large and eccentric orbits.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables, accepted in A&
