R-matrix Floquet theory for laser-assisted electron-atom scattering
A new version of the R-matrix Floquet theory for laser-assisted electron-atom
scattering is presented. The theory is non-perturbative and applicable to a
non-relativistic many-electron atom or ion in a homogeneous linearly polarized
field. It is based on the use of channel functions built from field-dressed

Designing physical activity interventions for women aged 50+: a qualitative study of participant perspectives.
BACKGROUND: The Active Women over 50 trial tested a scalable program for increasing physical activity among women aged 50+. The program included information, activity tracker and email support. This study sought to describe the participant perspectives of the Active Women over 50 program and considerations for designing physical activity interventions for this demographic. METHODS: Women who completed the Active Women over 50 trial were purposively recruited for maximum variation in age, employment, carer responsibility, medical conditions and physical activity. Individual semi-structured interviews explored their perspectives on physical activity, Active Women over 50 program components and suggestions for future iterations. Data were thematically analysed. RESULTS: Participants' capacity to be physically active was shaped by an interplay of factors. Our analysis generated four main themes relating to physical activity in general and to the program: Age and gender matters, Physical activity is social, Strategising for physical activity and the Self-responsibility discourse. At this midlife stage, physical activity participation was challenged by personal, life-stage and cultural factors, alongside a tension of the self-responsibility discourse which also impacted the program experience. Social factors and finding a suitable strategy for motivation were deemed integral aspects of being active. Future programs could consider facilitation of social networks and accountability, life-stage health information and positive framing to support self-responsibility. CONCLUSION: A range of strategies is key to supporting women over 50 to be more physically active due to the variety of circumstances and levels of agency experienced. We offer suggestions that do not need to be resource intensive but could be incorporated into a scaled program
Excess resistivity in graphene superlattices caused by umklapp electron-electron scattering
Umklapp processes play a fundamental role as the only intrinsic mechanism
that allows electrons to transfer momentum to the crystal lattice and,
therefore, provide a finite electrical resistance in pure metals. However,
umklapp scattering has proven to be elusive in experiment as it is easily
obscured by other dissipation mechanisms. Here we show that electron-electron
umklapp scattering dominates the transport properties of
graphene-on-boron-nitride superlattices over a wide range of temperatures and
carrier densities. The umklapp processes cause giant excess resistivity that
rapidly increases with increasing the superlattice period and are responsible
for deterioration of the room-temperature mobility by more than an order of
magnitude as compared to standard, non-superlattice graphene devices. The
umklapp scattering exhibits a quadratic temperature dependence accompanied by a
pronounced electron-hole asymmetry with the effect being much stronger for
holes rather than electrons. Aside from fundamental interest, our results have
direct implications for design of possible electronic devices based on
heterostructures featuring superlattices
The transition to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis: an exploratory qualitative study of health professionals' experiences
Background: Identifying the transition from relapsing-remitting to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) can be challenging for clinicians. Little previous research has explored how professionals experience working with patients during this specific stage of the disease. We explored the experiences of a group of multidisciplinary professionals who support patients in the transition to SPMS, to describe this stage from a professional perspective.
Methods: Qualitative semistructured interview study with 11 professionals (medical, nursing, and allied professionals; both specialists and generalists) working with patients with MS in South Wales, United Kingdom. Thematic analysis of the interview data was performed.
Results: Two overarching themes were identified: the transition and providing support. The theme âtransitionâ comprised issues related to recognizing and communicating about SPMS. Uncertainty influenced both recognizing the transition and knowing how to discuss it with patients. âProviding supportâ included descriptions of challenging aspects of patient care, providing support for carers, utilizing the multidisciplinary team, and working within service constraints. Providing adequate psychological support and engaging patients with self-management approaches were seen as particularly challenging.
Conclusions: Caring for patients in the transition to SPMS generates specific challenges for professionals. Further research on health-care interactions and patients'/professionals' experiences around the transition phase may help to identify strategies for professional development and learning, and how to optimize patient experience at this difficult stage of disease
"You are just left to get on with it": qualitative study of patient and carer experiences of the transition to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis
Objectives Although the transition to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) is known to be a period of uncertainty for clinicians, who may find progressive disease challenging to objectively identify, little research has explored the experiences of patients and carers specifically during this transition period. Our objective was to explore what patients and their carers understand about their disease stage and describe their experiences and perspectives on the transition to SPMS.
Design Semistructured qualitative interviews and subsequent validation focus groups were analysed using inductive thematic analysis.
Setting South East Wales, UK.
Participants 20 patients with MS and 13 carers were interviewed. Eight patients and two carers participated in focus groups.
Results Four main themes around disease progression were identified. âRealisationâ describes how patients came to understand they had SPMS while âreactionâ describes their response to this realisation. The ârealitiesâ of living with SPMS, including dealing with the healthcare system during this period, were described along with âfuture challengesâ envisaged by patients and carers.
Conclusions Awareness that the transition to SPMS has occurred, and subsequent emotional reactions and coping strategies, varied widely between patients and their carers. The process of diagnosing the transition was often not transparent and some individuals wanted information to help them understand what the transition to SPMS meant for them
The transition from the adiabatic to the sudden limit in core level photoemission: A model study of a localized system
We consider core electron photoemission in a localized system, where there is
a charge transfer excitation. The system is modelled by three electron levels,
one core level and two outer levels. The model has a Coulomb interaction
between these levels and the continuum states into which the core electron is
emitted. The model is simple enough to allow an exact numerical solution, and
with a separable potential an analytic solution. We calculate the ratio
r(omega) between the weights of the satellite and the main peak as a function
of the photon energy omega. The transition from the adiabatic to the sudden
limit takes place for quite small photoelectron kinetic energies. For such
small energies, the variation of the dipole matrix element is substantial and
described by the energy scale Ed. Without the coupling to the photoelectron,
the corresponding ratio r0(omega) is determined by Ed and the satellite
excitation energy dE. When the interaction potential with the continuum states
is introduced, a new energy scale Es=1/(2Rs^2) enters, where Rs is a length
scale of the interaction potential. At threshold there is typically a (weak)
constructive interference between intrinsic and extrinsic contributions, and
the ratio r(omega)/r0(omega) is larger than its limiting value for large omega.
The interference becomes small or weakly destructive for photoelectron energies
of the order Es. For larger energies r(omega)/r0(omega) therefore typically has
a weak undershoot. If this undershoot is neglected, r(omega)/r0(omega) reaches
its limiting value on the energy scale Es.Comment: 18 pages, latex2e, 13 eps figure
High-order fractal states in graphene superlattices
Graphene superlattices were shown to exhibit high-temperature quantum oscillations due to periodic emergence of delocalized Bloch states in high magnetic fields such that unit fractions of the flux quantum pierce a superlattice unit cell. Under these conditions, semiclassical electron trajectories become straight again, similar to the case of zero magnetic field. Here, we report magnetotransport measurements that reveal second-, third-, and fourth-order magnetic Bloch states at high electron densities and temperatures above 100 K. The recurrence of these states creates a fractal pattern intimately related to the origin of Hofstadter butterflies. The hierarchy of the fractal states is determined by the width of magnetic minibands, in qualitative agreement with our band-structure calculations
Electron quantum metamaterials in van der Waals heterostructures
In recent decades, scientists have developed the means to engineer synthetic
periodic arrays with feature sizes below the wavelength of light. When such
features are appropriately structured, electromagnetic radiation can be
manipulated in unusual ways, resulting in optical metamaterials whose function
is directly controlled through nanoscale structure. Nature, too, has adopted
such techniques -- for example in the unique coloring of butterfly wings -- to
manipulate photons as they propagate through nanoscale periodic assemblies. In
this Perspective, we highlight the intriguing potential of designer
sub-electron wavelength (as well as wavelength-scale) structuring of electronic
matter, which affords a new range of synthetic quantum metamaterials with
unconventional responses. Driven by experimental developments in stacking
atomically layered heterostructures -- e.g., mechanical pick-up/transfer
assembly -- atomic scale registrations and structures can be readily tuned over
distances smaller than characteristic electronic length-scales (such as
electron wavelength, screening length, and electron mean free path). Yet
electronic metamaterials promise far richer categories of behavior than those
found in conventional optical metamaterial technologies. This is because unlike
photons that scarcely interact with each other, electrons in subwavelength
structured metamaterials are charged, and strongly interact. As a result, an
enormous variety of emergent phenomena can be expected, and radically new
classes of interacting quantum metamaterials designed
The role of healthcare professionals in encouraging parents to see and hold their stillborn baby: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.
Background: Globally, during 2013 there were three million recorded stillbirths. Where clinical guidelines exist some recommend that professionals do not encourage parental contact. The guidance is based on quantitative evidence that seeing and holding the baby is not beneficial for everyone, but has been challenged by bereaved parents' organisations. We aim to inform future guideline development through a synthesis of qualitative studies reporting data relevant to the research question; how does the approach of healthcare professionals to seeing and holding the baby following stillbirth impact parents views and experiences?
Methods/Findings: Using a predetermined search strategy of PubMed and PsychINFO we identified robust qualitative studies reporting bereaved parental views and/or experiences relating to seeing and holding their stillborn baby (final search 24 February, 2014). Eligible studies were English language, reporting parental views, with gestational loss >20weeks. Quality was independently assessed by three authors using a validated tool. We used meta-ethnographic techniques to identify key themes and a line of argument synthesis. We included 12 papers, representing the views of 333 parents (156 mothers, 150 fathers, and 27 couples) from six countries. The final themes were: "[Still]birth: Nature of care is paramount", "Real babies: Perfect beauties, monsters and spectres", and "Opportunity of a lifetime lost." Our line-of-argument synthesis highlights the contrast between all parents need to know their baby, with the time around birth being the only time memories can be made, and the variable ability that parents have to articulate their preferences at that time. Thus, we hypothesised that how health professionals approach contact between parents and their stillborn baby demands a degree of active management. An important limitation of this paper is all included studies originated from high income, westernised countries raising questions about the findings transferability to other cultural contexts. We do not offer new evidence to answer the question "Should parents see and hold their stillborn baby?", instead our findings advance understanding of how professionals can support parents to make appropriate decisions in a novel, highly charged and dynamic situation.
Conclusions: Guidelines could be more specific in their recommendations regarding parental contact. The role of healthcare professionals in encouraging parents to see and hold their stillborn baby is paramount. Parental choice not to see their baby, apprehension, or uncertainty should be continuously revisited in the hours after birth as the opportunity for contact is fleeting and final
