    Multi-cultural visualization : how functional programming can enrich visualization (and vice versa)

    The past two decades have seen visualization flourish as a research field in its own right, with advances on the computational challenges of faster algorithms, new techniques for datasets too large for in-core processing, and advances in understanding the perceptual and cognitive processes recruited by visualization systems, and through this, how to improve the representation of data. However, progress within visualization has sometimes proceeded in parallel with that in other branches of computer science, and there is a danger that when novel solutions ossify into `accepted practice' the field can easily overlook significant advances elsewhere in the community. In this paper we describe recent advances in the design and implementation of pure functional programming languages that, significantly, contain important insights into questions raised by the recent NIH/NSF report on Visualization Challenges. We argue and demonstrate that modern functional languages combine high-level mathematically-based specifications of visualization techniques, concise implementation of algorithms through fine-grained composition, support for writing correct programs through strong type checking, and a different kind of modularity inherent in the abstractive power of these languages. And to cap it off, we have initial evidence that in some cases functional implementations are faster than their imperative counterparts

    The influence of in-eye cleaning/re-wetting drops on the performance of 30 day continuous wear silicone hydrogel contact lenses

    30 patients were enrolled in a double blind study designed to determine the efficacy and subjective preferences in reducing deposit accumulation, both lipid and protein, between an in-eye cleaning/re-wetting drop and a control re-wetting drop while wearing silicone hydrogel contact lenses on a 30 day continuous wear schedule. The patients had previously worn these contact lenses on a continuous wear schedule for a minimum of two weeks prior to enrollment in this study, and were asked to determine their preferences based on comfort, vision, and contact lens cleanliness. 27 patients completed the study of two thirty day continuous wear periods. With regard to comfort, 55.56% preferred the control drops, 29.63% preferred the in-eye cleaning/re-wetting drops, and 14.81% had no preference. With regard to vision 33.33% preferred the control drops, 25.93% preferred the in-eye cleaning/re-wetting drops, and 40.74% had no preference. With regard to lens cleanliness 48.15% preferred the control drops, 25.93% preferred the in-eye cleaning/re-wetting drops, and the remaining 25.93% had no preference. Biomicroscopy results of contact lens wetting, deposits, and numbers of mucin balls were equivalent for the two drops. In-eye cleaning/re-wetting drops appear to be compatible with silicone hydrogel contact lenses worn on a continuous wear basis and are similar in performance to re-wetting drops

    Quantitative vulnerability assessment of Corda river water basin: impacts of seasonality on water quality in the State of Maranhao

    The Corda river is the main source of fresh water for recreation, leisure, supply and irrigation to the municipality of Barra do Corda - MA. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the physicochemical parameters of Corda river’s water using the methodology described by the American Public Health Association. The water samples were collected in the seasonal period spanning between February and September of the year of 2018. The parameters which were analyzed during the study were pH, conductivity, turbidity, total dissolved solids and salinity, besides concentrations of nitrite, nitrate, and total phosphorus. Three principal components were identified during the PC Analysis. Those components explain more than 74% of the total variance observed during the rainy and dry season. Axis 1and 2 included variables which were related to quality of water and could be affected by the change in seasons. The results indicated that pH (7.11), P (2,82 mg L-1), NO3- (3,23 mg L-1), turbidity (35.82 NTU) and conductivity (35.83 µS/cm) parameters were most affected by changing from rainy to dry season

    Crop models and their use in assessing crop production and food security: A review

    Agriculture is directly related to food security as it determines the global food supply. Research in agriculture to predict crop productivity and losses helps avoid high food demand with little supply and price spikes. Here, we review ten crop models and one intercomparison project used for simulating crop growth and productivity under various impacts from soil–crop–atmosphere interactions. The review outlines food security and production assessments using numerical models for maize, wheat, and rice production. A summary of reviewed studies shows the following: (1) model ensembles provide smaller modeling errors compared to single models, (2) single models show better results when coupled with other types of models, (3) the ten reviewed crop models had improvements over the years and can accurately predict crop growth and yield for most of the locations, management conditions, and genotypes tested, (4) APSIM and DSSAT are fast and reliable in assessing broader output variables, (5) AquaCrop is indicated to investigate water footprint, quality and use efficiency in rainfed and irrigated systems, (6) all models assess nitrogen dynamics and use efficiency efficiently, excluding AquaCrop and WOFOST, (7) JULES specifies in evaluating food security vulnerability, (8) ORYZA is the main crop model used to evaluate paddy rice production, (9) grain filling is usually assessed with APSIM, DAISY, and DSSAT, and (10) the ten crop models can be used as tools to evaluate food production, availability, and security
