A spinor approach to Walker geometry
A four-dimensional Walker geometry is a four-dimensional manifold M with a
neutral metric g and a parallel distribution of totally null two-planes. This
distribution has a natural characterization as a projective spinor field
subject to a certain constraint. Spinors therefore provide a natural tool for
studying Walker geometry, which we exploit to draw together several themes in
recent explicit studies of Walker geometry and in other work of Dunajski (2002)
and Plebanski (1975) in which Walker geometry is implicit. In addition to
studying local Walker geometry, we address a global question raised by the use

Surface and capillary transitions in an associating binary mixture model
We investigate the phase diagram of a two-component associating fluid mixture
in the presence of selectively adsorbing substrates. The mixture is
characterized by a bulk phase diagram which displays peculiar features such as
closed loops of immiscibility. The presence of the substrates may interfere the
physical mechanism involved in the appearance of these phase diagrams, leading
to an enhanced tendency to phase separate below the lower critical solution
point. Three different cases are considered: a planar solid surface in contact
with a bulk fluid, while the other two represent two models of porous systems,
namely a slit and an array on infinitely long parallel cylinders. We confirm
that surface transitions, as well as capillary transitions for a large
area/volume ratio, are stabilized in the one-phase region. Applicability of our

Symmetry Properties on Magnetization in the Hubbard Model at Finite Temperatures
By making use of some symmetry properties of the relevant Hamiltonian, two
fundamental relations between the ferromagnetic magnetization and a spin
correlation function are derived for the -dimensional Hubbard model
at finite temperatures. These can be viewed as a kind of Ward-Takahashi
identities. The properties of the magnetization as a function of the applied
field are discussed. The results thus obtained hold true for both repulsive and
attractive on-site Coulomb interactions, and for arbitrary electron fillings.Comment: Latex file, no figur
I-123-FP-CIT SPECT in dementia with Lewy bodies, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease: a new quantitative analysis of autopsy confirmed cases
Purpose The aim of this study was to re-evaluate the differentiation of patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) using a quantitative analysis of I-123-FP-CIT SPECT scans.Methods Thirty-six patients with in vivo I-123-FP-CIT SPECT and neuropathological diagnoses were included. Based on neuropathological criteria, patients were further subclassified into nine AD, eight DLB, ten PD and nine with other diagnoses. An additional 16 healthy controls (HC) scanned with I-123-FP-CIT SPECT were also included. All images were visually assessed as normal versus abnormal uptake by consensus of five nuclear medicine physicians. Bihemispheric mean was calculated for caudate binding potential (CBP), putamen binding potential (PBP) and putamen-to-caudate ratio (PCR).Results Patients with DLB had significantly lower CBP and PBP than patients with AD and significantly higher PCR than patients with PD. Qualitative visual analysis of the images gave an accuracy of 88% in the evaluation of the status of the nigrostriatal pathway considering all individuals, and 96% considering only the patients with PD, AD and DLB. Quantitative analyses provided a balanced accuracy of 94%, 94% and 100% in binary classifications DLB versus AD, DLB versus PD and PD versus AD, respectively, and an accuracy of 93% in the differentiation among patients with DLB, AD and PD simultaneously. No statistically significant differences were observed between the AD and HC.Conclusions This study demonstrates a very high diagnostic accuracy of the quantitative analysis of(I-123-FP-CIT SPECT data to differentiate among patients with DLB, PD and AD.Neuro Imaging Researc
Human rights education in Japan: An historical account, characteristics and suggestions for a better-balanced approach
Although human rights are often expressed as universal tenets, the concept was conceived in a particular socio-political and historical context. Conceptualisations and practice of human rights vary across societies, and face numerous challenges. After providing an historical account of the conceptualisation of human rights in Japanese society, this paper examines human rights education in Japan, focusing on implementation of the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education. Whilst the Decadeâs Action Plan advocates a comprehensive approach, Japanese human rights education focuses far less attention on imparting knowledge and developing learnersâ attitudes, placing strong emphasis on aspects of responsibility and harmonious human relations understood in the historical context of Japanese moral education. Pedagogical proposals are made to promote a comprehensive approach, including focus on the role of empowering learners, enabling them to protect themselves by invoking human rights

Magnetization steps in a diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain: Theory and experiments on TMMC:Cd
A theory for the equilibrium low-temperature magnetization M of a diluted
Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is presented. The magnetization curve, M
versus B, is calculated using the exact contributions of finite chains with 1
to 5 spins, and the "rise and ramp approximation" for longer chains. Some
non-equilibrium effects that occur in a rapidly changing B, are also
considered. Specific non-equilibrium models based on earlier treatments of the
phonon bottleneck, and of spin flips associated with cross relaxation and with
level crossings, are discussed. Magnetization data on powders of TMMC diluted
with cadmium [i.e., (CH_3)_4NMn_xCd_(1-x)Cl_3, with 0.16<=x<=0.50 were measured
at 0.55 K in 18 T superconducting magnets. The field B_1 at the first MST from
pairs is used to determine the NN exchange constant, J, which changes from -5.9
K to -6.5 K as x increases from 0.16 to 0.50. The magnetization curves obtained
in the superconducting magnets are compared with simulations based on the
equilibrium theory. Data for the differential susceptibility, dM/dB, were taken
in pulsed magnetic fields (7.4 ms duration) up to 50 T, with the powder samples
in a 1.5 K liquid-helium bath. Non-equilibrium effects, which became more
severe as x decreased, were observed. The non-equilibrium effects are
tentatively interpreted using the "Inadequate Heat Flow Scenario," or to
cross-relaxation, and crossings of energy levels, including those of excited

Dichromatic state sum models for four-manifolds from pivotal functors
A family of invariants of smooth, oriented four-dimensional manifolds is defined via handle decompositions and the Kirby calculus of framed link diagrams. The invariants are parametrised by a pivotal functor from a spherical fusion category into a ribbon fusion category.
A state sum formula for the invariant is constructed via the chain-mail procedure, so a large class of topological state sum models can be expressed as link invariants. Most prominently, the Crane-Yetter state sum over an arbitrary ribbon fusion category is recovered, including the nonmodular case. It is shown that the Crane-Yetter invariant for nonmodular categories is stronger than signature and Euler invariant.
A special case is the four-dimensional untwisted Dijkgraaf-Witten model. Derivations of state space dimensions of TQFTs arising from the state sum model agree with recent calculations of ground state degeneracies in Walker-Wang models.
Relations to different approaches to quantum gravity such as Cartan geometry and teleparallel gravity are also discussed
Anomalous Effects of "Guest" Charges Immersed in Electrolyte: Exact 2D Results
We study physical situations when one or two "guest" arbitrarily-charged
particles are immersed in the bulk of a classical electrolyte modelled by a
Coulomb gas of positive/negative unit point-like charges, the whole system
being in thermal equilibrium. The models are treated as two-dimensional with
logarithmic pairwise interactions among charged constituents; the
(dimensionless) inverse temperature is considered to be smaller than 2
in order to ensure the stability of the electrolyte against the collapse of
positive-negative pairs of charges. Based on recent progress in the integrable
(1+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon theory, exact formulas are derived for the
chemical potential of one guest charge and for the asymptotic large-distance
behavior of the effective interaction between two guest charges. The exact
results imply, under certain circumstances, anomalous effects such as an
effective attraction (repulsion) between like-charged (oppositely-charged)
guest particles and the charge inversion in the electrolyte vicinity of a
highly-charged guest particle. The adequacy of the concept of renormalized
charge is confirmed in the whole stability region of inverse temperatures and

Magnetic properties of exactly solvable doubly decorated Ising-Heisenberg planar models
Applying the decoration-iteration procedure, we introduce a class of exactly
solvable doubly decorated planar models consisting both of the Ising- and
Heisenberg-type atoms. Exact solutions for the ground state, phase diagrams and
basic physical quantities are derived and discussed. The detailed analysis of
the relevant quantities suggests the existence of an interesting quantum
