    The Eliza effect and its dangers: from demystification to gender critique

    This essay provides a gender critique of the Eliza effect. It delineates the way in which the Eliza effect is operationalised in AI research even as it is ostensibly demystified, for example in the writings of Douglas Hofstadter and Joseph Weizenbaum. It then exposes the gendered assumptions embedded in the nomenclature used to name this misperception of the computer as having capabilities equivalent to the human. It traces the genealogy of that nomenclature back through Weizenbaum’s ELIZA, to George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. A close reading of the play is deployed in order to reveal the structural inequities of gender, class, and who or what gets to be human, that are both explored in the play and encoded in the operation and operationalisations of the Eliza effect. It concludes by attending to that operation and operationalisation in relation to today’s Virtual Personal Assistant’s, and makes a case for the importance of critique in order to expose the inequitable structures of power obscured and compounded by the Eliza effect – both its name, and that which it names

    The significance of seniority for women managers’ interpretations of organizational restructuring

    This paper examines the impact of restructuring within the transport and logistics sector on women managers working at senior and less senior (middle/junior management) levels of the organization. The majority of women experienced increased performance pressures and heavier workloads as well as an increase in working hours. At the same time, there were pressures to work at home (i.e. week-ends and evenings) and reduced opportunities to work from home (i.e. during normal office hours). Management level emerged as an important factor in how these changes were interpreted. Senior managers perceived more positive outcomes in terms of increased motivation and loyalty. Despite a longer working week, they were less likely to report low morale as an outcome from long hours. In fact, irrespective of management level, women working shorter hours were more likely to report low morale as an outcome. Results are discussed in relation to literature on restructuring and careers, in terms of perceptual framing and in relation to different levels of investment in the organization

    Mutations in the paralogous human α-globin genes yielding identical hemoglobin variants

    The human α-globin genes are paralogues, sharing a high degree of DNA sequence similarity and producing an identical α-globin chain. Over half of the α-globin structural variants reported to date are only characterized at the amino acid level. It is likely that a fraction of these variants, with phenotypes differing from one observation to another, may be due to the same mutation but on a different α-globin gene. There have been very few previous examples of hemoglobin variants that can be found at both HBA1 and HBA2 genes. Here, we report the results of a systematic multicenter study in a large multiethnic population to identify such variants and to analyze their differences from a functional and evolutionary perspective. We identified 14 different Hb variants resulting from identical mutations on either one of the two human α-globin paralogue genes. We also showed that the average percentage of hemoglobin variants due to a HBA2 gene mutation (α2) is higher than the percentage of hemoglobin variants due to the same HBA1 gene mutation (α1) and that the α2/α1 ratio varied between variants. These α-globin chain variants have most likely occurred via recurrent mutations, gene conversion events, or both. Based on these data, we propose a nomenclature for hemoglobin variants that fall into this category

    Technology use, adoption and behaviour in older adults: results from the iStoppFalls Project

    Technology use is a common constituent of modern life. However, little is known about older adults’ use of technology. This article presents a subset of data collected via the technology deployed in the iStoppFalls randomized control trial. The primary focus lies on questions about digital device/Internet use, ownership, length, and frequency as well as social networking. Data was collected from participants aged 65 years or older. Seventy-eight participants completed a specifically developed technology survey as part of the baseline assessment. Results showed that the majority of subjects owned a computer with men being its main user. Participants used technological devices on a daily basis for more than 1 year. The main reason for using technology was e-mail communication, search engines, text processing, and online shopping. Only a few participants used social network applications, with Google+ and Facebook being the most popular ones. Future work should consider an in-depth qualitative approach to further increase understanding of technology use in older adults

    Clinically relevant updates of the HbVar database of human hemoglobin variants and thalassemia mutations

    HbVar (http://globin.bx.psu.edu/hbvar) is a widely-used locus-specific database (LSDB) launched 20 years ago by a multi-center academic effort to provide timely information on the numerous genomic variants leading to hemoglobin variants and all types of thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies. Here, we report several advances for the database. We made clinically relevant updates of HbVar, implemented as additional querying options in the HbVar query page, allowing the user to explore the clinical phenotype of compound heterozygous patients. We also made significant improvements to the HbVar front page, making comparative data querying, analysis and output more user-friendly. We continued to expand and enrich the regular data content, involving 1820 variants, 230 of which are new entries. We also increased the querying potential and expanded the usefulness of HbVar database in the clinical setting. These several additions, expansions and updates should improve the utility of HbVar both for the globin research community and in a clinical setting

    Stuck in the slow lane: reconceptualising the links between gender, transport and social exclusion

    This article draws upon primary research undertaken with over 3,000 women in the North East of England to explore the links between women, transport and the labour market. The research, funded by the ESF, advances the idea of spatiality as a social construction and builds on seminal studies relating to women and poverty to consider the way in which a gender division of transport constrains women's mobility and restricts their employment opportunities. It is likely to contribute to important debates, concerning strategies to tackle worklessness and the most effective spatial level at which to configure public transport networks

    Hb H disease resulting from the association of an α0-thalassemia allele [-(α)20.5] with an unstable α-globin variant [Hb Icaria]: First report on the occurrence in Brazil

    Hb H Disease is caused by the loss or inactivation of three of the four functional α-globin genes. Patients present chronic hemolytic anemia and splenomegaly. In some cases, occasional blood transfusions are required. Deletions are the main cause of this type of thalassemia ( α-thalassemia). We describe here an unusual case of Hb H disease caused by the combination of a common α0 deletion [-( α) 20.5 ] with a rare point mutation (c.427T > A), thus resulting in an elongated and unstable α-globin variant, Hb Icaria, (X142K), with 31 additional amino-acid residues. Very high levels of Hb H and Hb Bart's were detected in the patient's red blood cells (14.7 and 19.0%, respectively). This is the first description of this infrequent association in the Brazilian population
