Secondly, a set of questions was constructed to observe studentsā€˜ feedback. Surprisingly, the result of the study shows that eight chapters presented in the module are, considerably, more appropriate for EGAP class rather than ESAP class. Besides, it was found that each chapter is less-defined as every of them is organized differently. Furthermore, the whole aspects conclude that aĀ lot of room remains for improvement for the materials in order to meet the studentsā€˜ need

ABSTRACT Ā  Wahyunianto, Dian. 2012. Using Pictorial Cards to Enhance Speaking Skill of The Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 5 Kediri. Undergraduate Thesis, English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang. Advisor: Drs. Fachrurrazy, M.A., Ph.D. Ā  Keywords : speaking, pictorial cards, senior high school Ā  In a real teaching-learning process, speaking does not get a special attention. Teachers prefer to teach reading and listening, while speaking and writing are being number two in their teaching and learning process. Based on the result of the preliminary study, it was known that students of class X.3 at SMAN 5 Kediri had problems in speaking. Their problems were mostly caused by the lack of speaking activity in their class. Besides, the students could not elaborate their ideas in speaking. To overcome this problem, the use of pictorial cards was suggested as the media to enhance studentsā€™ speaking skill. The objective of this study is to improve studentsā€™ speaking skill. The research design used in this study is classroom action research (CAR). It consists four steps: planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting the action. The setting of the study was in SMAN 5 Kediri and the subjects are 30 students from X.3 class in the second semester of 2013/2014 academic year. The researcher designed the lesson plan, prepared the materials and instruments, decided the criteria of success, and also assessed the studentsā€™ speaking performance. The research findings indicated that using pictorial cards as the media to enhance studentsā€™ speaking skill was successful. It can be seen in studentsā€™ speaking score that could reach the SKM (Standar Kelulusan Minimal) or standard score determined by the researcher. 86.2% of the students got a score above or the same as 70. Besides, the results of questionnaire showed that 92% of the students were enjoying the teaching and learning process using pictorial cards as the media. With the help of the pictorial cards, the students could mention more than 6 characteristics of an animal if compared to the studentsā€™ performance in the preliminary study that showed the students could only mention 2 to 4 characteristics. Pictorial cards could help the students to develop their ideas since it contains pictures. In addition, in the teaching and learning process, the students could enjoy and did the activities given by the researcher well. Based on the result of the study, the researcher suggested English teachers use pictorial cards as the media in the classroom activities, especially in speaking activity. Furthermore, the other researchers are suggested to implement this study with adjustments in technique and levels of education or different settings or places.
