One-year follow-up of family versus child CBT for anxiety disorders: Exploring the roles of child age and parental intrusiveness.
ObjectiveTo compare the relative long-term benefit of family-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (FCBT) and child-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CCBT) for child anxiety disorders at a 1-year follow-up.MethodThirty-five children (6-13 years old) randomly assigned to 12-16 sessions of family-focused CBT (FCBT) or child-focused CBT (CCBT) participated in a 1-year follow-up assessment. Independent evaluators, parents, and children rated anxiety and parental intrusiveness. All were blind to treatment condition and study hypotheses.ResultsChildren assigned to FCBT had lower anxiety scores than children assigned to CCBT on follow-up diagnostician- and parent-report scores, but not child-report scores. Exploratory analyses suggested the advantage of FCBT over CCBT may have been evident more for early adolescents than for younger children and that reductions in parental intrusiveness may have mediated the treatment effect.ConclusionFCBT may yield a stronger treatment effect than CCBT that lasts for at least 1 year, although the lack of consistency across informants necessitates a circumspect view of the findings. The potential moderating and mediating effects considered in this study offer interesting avenues for further study

Marine Conservation Begins at Home : How a Local Community and Protection of a Small Bay Sent Waves of Change Around the UK and Beyond
The Firth of Clyde, on the west coast of Scotland, was once one of the most productive fishing grounds in Europe. However, successive decades of poor management and overfishing led to a dramatic loss of biodiversity and the collapse of finfish fisheries. In response, concerned local residents on the Isle of Arran, which lies in the middle of the Clyde, formed the Community of Arran Seabed Trust (COAST) in 1995. After 13 years of campaigning, a small (2.67 km2) area in Lamlash Bay became Scotland’s first no-take zone (NTZ) in 2008, and only the second in the UK. Since protection, biodiversity has increased substantially, along with the size, age and density of commercially important species such as the king scallop, Pecten maximus, and the European lobster, Homarus gammarus. Arguably more important, however, is the influence the Lamlash Bay NTZ and COAST have had on UK marine protection in general. Most notably, detailed research has created a case study that clearly demonstrates the benefits of protection in an area where little such evidence is available. This case has been used repeatedly to support efforts for increased protection of UK waters to help rebuild marine ecosystems and enhance their resilience in an uncertain future. In Scotland specifically, lobbying by COAST led to the designation of a much larger marine protected area (MPA, >250 km2) around the south of Arran, one of 30 new MPAs in the country. Evidence from Lamlash Bay has supported development of strong protection for these MPAs, seeing off lobbyist efforts to weaken management. Arran’s conservation success has been recognized internationally and is inspiring greater involvement of local communities around the UK, and further afield, to take the destiny of their coastal waters into their own hands. Equipment management trial : final report
Executive Summary
The Equipment Management (EM) trial was one of the practical initiatives conceived and
implemented by members of The Application Home Initiative (TAHI) to demonstrate the
feasibility of interoperability between white and brown goods, and other domestic equipment.
The trial ran from October 2002 to June 2005, over which period it achieved its core
objectives through the deployment in early 2005 of an integrated system in trials in 15
occupied homes. Prior to roll out into the field, the work was underpinned by soak testing,
validation, laboratory experiments, case studies, user questionnaires, simulations and other
research, conducted in a single demonstration home in Loughborough, as well as in
Universities in the East Midlands and Scotland.
Throughout its life, the trial faced significant membership changes, which had a far greater
impact than the technical issues that were tackled. Two blue chip companies withdrew at the
point of signing the collaborative agreement; another made a major change in strategic
direction half way through and withdrew the major portion of its backing; another corporate left
at this point, a second one later; one corporate was a late entrant; the technical leader made
a boardroom decision not to do the engineering work that it had promised; one company went
into liquidation; another went up for sale whilst others reorganised. The trial was conducted
against this backdrop of continual commercial change. Despite this difficult operating
environment, the trial met its objectives, although not entirely as envisaged initially – a tribute
to the determination of the trial’s membership, the strength of its formal governance and
management processes, and especially, the financial support of the dti.
The equipment on trial featured a central heating/hot water boiler, washing machine, security
system, gas alarm and utility meters, all connected to a home gateway, integrated functionally
and presented to the users via a single interface.
The trial met its principal objective to show that by connecting appliances to each other and to
a support system, benefits in remote condition monitoring, maintenance, appliance & home
controls optimisation and convenience to the customer & service supplier could be provided.
This is one of two main reports that form the trial output (the other, the Multi Home Trial
Report, is available to EM Trial members only as it contains commercially sensitive
information). A supporting library of documents is also available and is held in the virtual
office hosted by Loughborough University Centre for the Integrated Home Environment

The EM trial identified exciting opportunities for the UK’s domestic white and brown goods manufacturing sector. Despite the relative immaturity of some of the enabling technologies people seem interested in the use of smart home devices to improve their quality of life or just generally make things easier at home in their busy schedules. Whilst the enabling technology behind future smart homes is being developed at a rapid pace, it is the intelligent application and integration of this technology that will make the difference to the home consumer. Just because the technology provider can make a ‘useful’ device it does not necessarily mean that the consumer actually wants to buy the ‘new’ invention. The EM trial has successfully shown where certain technology can be deployed successfully and also identified areas where further work is required

Practice makes perfect: the development of a medical student-led crowdsourced question bank for self-study in undergraduate medical education
Implication Statement
The development of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) for undergraduate medical education study purposes is resource intensive. Commercially available question banks are typically expensive, only available in English, and may not be aligned with medical school learning objectives. Here, we introduce The Ottawa Question Bank: a student-led, bilingual study resource curated to a Canadian undergraduate medicine curriculum (www.theottawaquestionbank.ca). In total, 205 medical students wrote and edited 4438 original MCQs linked to objectives from the University of Ottawa undergraduate medical education curriculum. The project has received positive feedback from both developers and users. Our experience suggests that involving medical students in MCQ development is feasible and can result in the rapid creation of a low-cost, high-quality study resource curated to a program’s learning objectives. The platform outlined here can be used as a model for other medical schools and professional degree programs to develop their own question banks, including pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and physiotherapy.
