    Performance modelling and analysis of software defined networking

    Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging architecture for the next-generation Internet, providing unprecedented network programmability to handle the explosive growth of Big Data driven by the popularisation of smart mobile devices and the pervasiveness of content-rich multimedia applications. In order to quantitatively investigate the performance characteristics of SDN networks, several research efforts from both simulation experiments and analytical modelling have been reported in the current literature. Among those studies, analytical modelling has demonstrated its superiority in terms of cost-effectiveness in the evaluation of large-scale networks. However, for analytical tractability and simplification, existing analytical models are derived based on the unrealistic assumptions that the network traffic follows the Poisson process which is suitable to model non-bursty text data and the data plane of SDN is modelled by one simplified Single Server Single Queue (SSSQ) system. Recent measurement studies have shown that, due to the features of heavy volume and high velocity, the multimedia big data generated by real-world multimedia applications reveals the bursty and correlated nature in the network transmission. With the aim of the capturing such features of realistic traffic patterns and obtaining a comprehensive and deeper understanding of the performance behaviour of SDN networks, this paper presents a new analytical model to investigate the performance of SDN in the presence of the bursty and correlated arrivals modelled by Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP). The Quality-of-Service performance metrics in terms of the average latency and average network throughput of the SDN networks are derived based on the developed analytical model. To consider realistic multi-queue system of forwarding elements, a Priority-Queue (PQ) system is adopted to model SDN data plane. To address the challenging problem of obtaining the key performance metrics, e.g., queue length distribution of PQ system with a given service capacity, a versatile methodology extending the Empty Buffer Approximation (EBA) method is proposed to facilitate the decomposition of such a PQ system to two SSSQ systems. The validity of the proposed model is demonstrated through extensive simulation experiments.     A systematic review on the anxiolytic effects of aromatherapy in people with anxiety symptoms

    Purpose: We reviewed studies from 1990 to 2010 on using aromatherapy for people with anxiety or anxiety symptoms and examined their clinical effects. Methods: The review was conducted on available electronic databases to extract journal articles that evaluated the anxiolytic effects of aromatherapy for people with anxiety symptoms. Results: The results were based on 16 randomized controlled trials examining the anxiolytic effects of aromatherapy among people with anxiety symptoms. Most of the studies indicated positive effects to quell anxiety. No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: It is recommended that aromatherapy could be applied as a complementary therapy for people with anxiety symptoms. Further studies with better quality on methodology should be conducted to identify its clinical effects and the underlying biologic mechanisms. © 2011, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.published_or_final_versio

    Excitation Spectra And Hard-core Thermodynamics Of Bosonic Atoms In Optical Superlattices

    A generalized double-well-basis coupled representation is proposed to investigate excitation spectra and thermodynamics of bosonic atoms in double-well optical superlattices. In the hard-core limit and with a filling factor of one, excitations describing the creation of pairs of a doubly occupied state and a simultaneous empty state, and those from a symmetric singly occupied state to an antisymmetric state are carefully analyzed and their excitation spectra are calculated within mean-field theory. Based on the hard-core statistics, the equilibrium properties such as heat capacity and particle populations are studied in detail.     QCD Approach to B->D \pi Decays and CP Violation

    The branching ratios and CP violations of the BDπB\to D\pi decays, including both the color-allowed and the color-suppressed modes, are investigated in detail within QCD framework by considering all diagrams which lead to three effective currents of two quarks. An intrinsic mass scale as a dynamical gluon mass is introduced to treat the infrared divergence caused by the soft collinear approximation in the endpoint regions, and the Cutkosky rule is adopted to deal with a physical-region singularity of the on mass-shell quark propagators. When the dynamical gluon mass μg\mu_g is regarded as a universal scale, it is extracted to be around μg=440\mu_g = 440 MeV from one of the well-measured BDπB\to D\pi decay modes. The resulting predictions for all branching ratios are in agreement with the current experimental measurements. As these decays have no penguin contributions, there are no direct CPCP asymmetries. Due to interference between the Cabibbo-suppressed and the Cabibbo-favored amplitudes, mixing-induced CP violations are predicted in the BD±πB\to D^{\pm}\pi^{\mp} decays to be consistent with the experimental data at 1-σ\sigma level.     Effect of 2-(3-carboxy-1-oxopropyl) amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose on human esophageal cancer cell line

    Aim: To determine whether 2-(3-carboxy-1-oxopropy1) amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose (COPADG), a derivative of D-amino-glucose, inhibited the growth of human esophageal cancer cell line Eca-109. Methods: Effects of COPADG on Eca-109 cells cultured in RPMI 1640 medium were examined by a tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay (MTT assay). Results: COPADG inhibited the growth of Eca-109 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner; the maximum inhibition rate was 83.75%. Conclusion: COPADG can directly inhibit the proliferation of Eca-109 cells, which may serve as the experimental evidence for development of new drugs for esophageal cancer therapy.
