Is Cycle 24 the Beginning of a Dalton-Like Minimum?
The unexpected development of cycle 24 emphasizes the need for a better way
to model future solar activity. In this article, we analyze the accumulation of
spotless days during individual cycles from 1798-2010. The analysis shows that
spotless days do not disappear abruptly in the transition towards an active
sun. A comparison with past cycles indicates that the ongoing accumulation of
spotless days is comparable to that of cycle 5 near the Dalton minimum and to
that of cycles 12, 14 and 15. It also suggests that the ongoing cycle has as
much as 20 \pm 8 spotless days left, from July 2010, before it reaches the next
solar maximum. The last spotless day is predicted to be in December 2012, with
an uncertainty of 11 months. This trend may serve as input to the solar dynamo

Dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting Nb3Sn films
The penetration of magnetic flux into a thin superconducting film of Nb3Sn
with critical temperature 17.8K and critical current density 6MA/cm^2 was
visualized using magneto-optical imaging. Below 8 K an avalanche-like flux
penetration in form of big and branching dendritic structures was observed in
response to increasing perpendicular applied field. When a growing dendritic
branch meets a linear defect in the film, several scenarios were observed: the
branch can turn and propagate along the defect, continue propagation right
through it, or "tunnel" along a flux-filled defect and continue growth from its
other end. The avalanches manifest themselves in numerous small and random

One-dimensional dynamics of QCD2 string
We show that QCD on 2D pseudo-manifolds is consistent with the
Gross-Taylor string picture. It allows us to introduce a model describing the
one-dimensional evolution of the QCD string (in the sense that QCD
itself is regarded as a zero-dimensional system). The model is shown to possess
the third order phase transition associated with the Bose string below
which it becomes equivalent to the vortex-free sector of the 1-dimensional
matrix model. We argue that it could serve as a toy model for the
glueball-threshold behavior of multicolor QCD.Comment: 9p., LaTe

Randomly dilute Ising model: A nonperturbative approach
The N-vector cubic model relevant, among others, to the physics of the
randomly dilute Ising model is analyzed in arbitrary dimension by means of an
exact renormalization-group equation. This study provides a unified picture of
its critical physics between two and four dimensions. We give the critical
exponents for the three-dimensional randomly dilute Ising model which are in
good agreement with experimental and numerical data. The relevance of the cubic

Interference and interaction effects in multi-level quantum dots
Using renormalization group techniques, we study spectral and transport
properties of a spinless interacting quantum dot consisting of two levels
coupled to metallic reservoirs. For strong Coulomb repulsion and an applied
Aharonov-Bohm phase , we find a large direct tunnel splitting
between the levels of
the order of the level broadening . As a consequence we discover a
many-body resonance in the spectral density that can be measured via the
absorption power. Furthermore, for , we show that the system can be

Oestradiol contributes to differential antitumour effects of adjuvant zoledronic acid observed between pre- and post-menopausal women
Clinical trials have demonstrated that adding zoledronic acid (Zol) to (neo)adjuvant standard of care has differential antitumour effects in pre- and post-menopausal women: Both benefit from reduced recurrence in bone; however, while postmenopausal women also incur survival benefit, none is seen in premenopausal women treated with adjuvant bisphosphonates. In the current study, we have used mouse models to investigate the role of oestradiol in modulating potential antitumour effects of Zol. Pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal concentrations of oestradiol were modelled in BALB/c wild-type, BALB/c nude, and C57BL/6 mice by ovariectomy followed by supplementation with oestradiol. Mice also received 40 mg/kg/day goserelin to prevent ovariectomy-induced increases in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Metastasis was modelled following injection of MDA-MB-231, 4T1, or E0771 cells after ovariectomy and saline or 100 μg/kg Zol administered weekly. Supplementing ovariectomised mice with 12.5 mg/ml, 1.38 mg/ml, and 0 ng/ml oestradiol, in the presence of goserelin, resulted in serum concentrations of 153.16 ± 18.10 pg/ml, 48.64 ± 18.44 pg/ml, and 1.00 ± 0.27 pg/ml oestradiol, which are equivalent to concentrations found in pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal humans. Osteoclast activity was increased 1.5–1.8-fold with peri- and post-menopausal compared with premenopausal oestradiol, resulting in a 1.34–1.69-fold reduction in trabecular bone. Zol increased trabecular bone in all groups but did not restore bone to volumes observed under premenopausal conditions. In tumour-bearing mice, Zol reduced bone metastases in BALB/c (wild-type and nude), with greatest effects seen under pre- and post-menopausal concentrations of oestradiol. Zol did not affect soft tissue metastases in immunocompetent BALB/c mice but increased metastases 3.95-fold in C57BL/6 mice under premenopausal concentrations of oestradiol. In contrast, Zol significantly reduced soft tissue metastases 2.07 and 4.69-fold in immunocompetent BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice under postmenopausal oestradiol, mirroring the results of the clinical trials of (neo)adjuvant bisphosphonates. No effects on soft tissue metastases were observed in immunocompromised mice, and differences in antitumour response did not correlate with musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma (MAF), macrophage capping protein (CAPG), or PDZ domain containing protein GIPC1 (GIPC1) expression. In conclusion, oestradiol contributes to altered antitumour effects of Zol observed between pre- and post-menopausal women. However, other immunological/microenvironmental factors are also likely to contribute to this phenomenon
Controlling laser spectra in a phaseonium photonic crystal using maser
We study the control of quantum resonances in photonic crystals with
electromagnetically induced transparency driven by microwave field. In addition
to the control laser, the intensity and phase of the maser can alter the
transmission and reflection spectra in interesting ways, producing hyperfine
resonances through the combined effects of multiple scattering in the

Glueball spectrum based on a rigorous three-dimensional relativistic equation for two-gluon bound states I: Derivation of the relativistic equation
A rigorous three-dimensional relativistic equation satisfied by two-gluon
bound states is derived from the QCD with massive gluons. With the gluon fields
and the quark fields being expanded in terms of the gluon multipole fields and
the spherical Dirac spinors respectively, the equation is well established in
the angular momentum representation and hence is much convenient for solving
the problem of two-gluon glueball spectra. In particular, the interaction
kernel in the equation is exactly derived and given a closed expression which
includes all the interactions taking place in the two-gluon glueballs. The
kernel contains only a few types of Green's functions and commutators.
Therefore, it is not only easily calculated by the perturbation method, but
also provides a suitable basis for nonperturbative investigations
