    SiGe HBT X-Band LNAs for Ultra-Low-Noise Cryogenic Receivers

    We report results on the cryogenic operation of two different monolithic X-band silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistor low noise amplifiers (LNAs) implemented in a commercially-available 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS platform. These SiGe LNAs exhibit a dramatic reduction in noise temperature with cooling, yielding Teff of less than 21 K (0.3 dB noise figure) across X-band at a 15 K operating temperature. To the authors’ knowledge, these SiGe LNAs exhibit the lowest broadband noise of any Si-based LNA reported to date

    Widely tunable, non-degenerate three-wave mixing microwave device operating near the quantum limit

    We present the first experimental realization of a widely frequency tunable, non-degenerate three-wave mixing device for quantum signals at GHz frequency. It is based on a new superconducting building-block consisting of a ring of four Josephson junctions shunted by a cross of four linear inductances. The phase configuration of the ring remains unique over a wide range of magnetic fluxes threading the loop. It is thus possible to vary the inductance of the ring with flux while retaining a strong, dissipation-free, and noiseless non-linearity. The device has been operated in amplifier mode and its noise performance has been evaluated by using the noise spectrum emitted by a voltage biased tunnel junction at finite frequency as a test signal. The unprecedented accuracy with which the crossover between zero-point-fluctuations and shot noise has been measured provides an upper-bound for the noise and dissipation intrinsic to the device.Comment: Accepted for Physical Review Letters.     Glutamate receptor activation triggers OPA1 release and induces apoptotic cell death in ischemic rat retina

    PurposeGlutamate receptor activation-induced excitotoxicity has been hypothesized to cause retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death in glaucoma and to link mitochondrial dysfunction in both acute and chronic neurodegenerative disorders. However, the relationships among elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), glutamate receptor-mediated excitotoxicity, and mitochondrial dysfunction in glaucoma remains unknown. The goal of this study was to determine whether the N- methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor antagonist MK801 can block optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) release and subsequent apoptotic cell death, as well as whether acute IOP elevation triggers OPA1 release and alters OPA1 gene and protein expression in the rat retina after ischemia.MethodsSprague Dawley rats received injections of MK801 (10 mg/kg) or vehicle and then transient retinal ischemia was induced by acute IOP elevation. Following subcellular fractionation, changes in cytoplasmic and mitochondrial OPA1 were assessed by western blot analysis. Also, the expression of OPA1 mRNA was measured by Taqman qPCR, the distribution of OPA1 protein was assessed by immunohistochemistry, and apoptotic cell death was assessed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining.ResultsThe ~65 and 90 kDa isoforms of OPA1 were increased in the cytosol in the rat retina at 6 h and at 12 h, but only the 90 kDa isoform of OPA1 was decreased at 12 h after ischemia induced by acute IOP elevation. This suggests that ischemic insult induced OPA1 release from the mitochondria in retinas. Pretreatment with MK801 blocked this effect and significantly increased OPA1 immunoreactivity in the inner retinal layers, as well as OPA1 gene expression and total protein expression in retinas at 12 h after ischemia. Further, pretreatment with MK801 prevented apoptotic cell death in retinas at 12 h after ischemia. Following acute IOP elevation, Bcl-2 mRNA expression in retinas was decreased at 3 h and 6 h but increased at 12 h and 24 h. In contrast, Bax mRNA expression in these retinas was increased in the first 12 h and then plateaued. Moreover, pretreatment with MK801 increased Bcl-2 mRNA expression, but did not alter the course of Bax mRNA expression.ConclusionsThese results indicate that OPA1 release from mitochondria triggered by acute IOP elevation is inhibited by blockade of glutamate receptor activation. Because this effect was accompanied by increases of Bcl-2 expression, no changes of Bax expression, and blockade of apoptosis, these findings indicate that glutamate receptor activation following acute IOP elevation may lead to a distinct mitochondria-mediated cell death pathway in ischemic retina. These results support further studies to determine whether ischemia-induced OPA1 release may be an important component of the biochemical cascade leading to pressure-related ischemic damage in glaucomatous retina

    Asymmetric Patterns of Visual Field Defect in Primary Open-Angle and Primary Angle-Closure Glaucoma

    Purpose: To compare the hemifield asymmetry of visual field (VF) loss in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) across all severity levels. Methods: A total of 522 eyes of 327 patients with POAG (mean age ± SD, 54.1 ± 12.4 years) and 375 eyes of 204 patients with PACG (67.3 ± 8.9 years) were included. Subjects meeting the definitions of POAG or PACG were included. Means of the total deviation (TD) values (Humphrey 24-2 VF) in the Glaucoma Hemifield Test (GHT) regions were calculated in early (≥ −6 dB), moderate (< −6 dB and ≥ −12 dB), and advanced (< −12 dB) stages of POAG and PACG eyes. Then the differences of the TD values between superior and inferior hemifield GHT regions of POAG and PACG eyes were calculated. Also, the relationship between the values of pattern SD (PSD) and mean TD (mTD) was compared between POAG and PACG. Results: In POAG eyes in the early stage, three regions (central, paracentral, and peripheral) in the superior hemifield had greater loss than their inferior counterparts; in moderate and advanced stages, all GHT regions in the superior hemifield had greater loss than their inferior counterparts. In PACG eyes, siginificantly fewer regions in the superior hemifield were significantly worse than their inferior counterpart, compared with POAG: one region (central) in early stage, two regions (central and peripheral) in moderate stage, and one region (central) in advanced stage. POAG eyes had greater PSD values than PACG eyes for given mean of TD values. Conclusions: In both POAG and PACG eyes, VF damage was more pronounced in superior hemifield than inferior hemifield; however, this tendency was more obvious in POAG eyes than in PACG eyes

    Four-photon interference: a realizable experiment to demonstrate violation of EPR postulates for perfect correlations

    Bell's theorem reveals contradictions between the predictions of quantum mechanics and the EPR postulates for a pair of particles only in situations involving imperfect statistical correlations. However, with three or more particles, contradictions emerge even for perfect correlations. We describe an experiment which can be realized in the laboratory, using four-photon entangled states generated by parametric down-conversion, to demonstrate this contradiction at the level of perfect correlations.Comment: publishe
