Exceptional points in the elliptic-hyperelliptic locus

An exceptional point in the moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces is a unique surface class whose full automorphism group acts with a triangular signature. A surface admitting a conformal involution with quotient an elliptic curve is called elliptic-hyperelliptic; one admitting an anticonformal involution is called symmetric. In this paper, we determine, up to topological conjugacy, the full group of conformal and anticonformal automorphisms of a symmetric exceptional point in the elliptic-hyperelliptic locus. We determine the number of ovals of any symmetry of such a surface. We show that while the elliptic-hyperelliptic locus can contain an arbitrarily large number of exceptional points, no more than four are symmetric.Comment: 23 pages; shortened for publicatio

Reevaluating Prestige: The Influence of History on the Decision to Reclassify to Division I: A Case Study

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of an institution’s past on the administrative decision to reclassify the institution’s athletic department to NCAA Division I. The study focused on the environment that existed prior to the reclassification and the administrative rationale used to justify the move. Two universities, University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and Elon University, were chosen for case study analysis. Data were collected and analyzed using case study methodologies and an adapted model of Pettigrew’s contextualist approach. Documents, archival records, semi-structured interviews, participant observations, physical artifacts, and direct observations from each institution were gathered. Three constructs from Pettigrew’s model: context, process, and content served as the basis for data analysis. Content analysis of all documents and interview transcripts revealed several themes. Results indicated that although the context at each university was different, each university believed the reclassification would improve their institutional profile among competitive peer institutions. Findings aid in gaining a better appreciation of the historical context in which the organizational change of the upward reclassification to Division I occurred. This study serves as a first step to understanding adminstrators’ rationale for moving an athletic program to Division I

Declining the Big East: A Case Study of the College of the Holy Cross

Abstract          The case study examines Holy Cross’ decision not to join the Big East Conference in 1979. Specifically, the case analyzes the commitment to a marketing strategy to de-emphasize athletics at a time when many institutions were using the growth of television to help market their university brand. The study also highlights the impact the decision has had on the institution and the athletic department since 1979. Data were gathered by interviewing two former administrators with over 50 years of experience at Holy Cross, and reviewing archival data and documents including administrators’ correspondence and letters, newspaper articles, magazines and websites related to Holy Cross athletics. Themes are presented in a chronological format to show the sequence of each theme. Results indicated that although the Big East presented many opportunities, administrators valued the academic brand of the institution and refused to sacrifice that brand in the pursuit of big-time athletics.
