    The bundles of algebraic and Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields

    Our main objective in this paper is to clarify the ontology of Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields (DHSF) and its relationship with even multivector fields, on a Riemann-Cartan spacetime (RCST) M=(M,g,del,tau(g),up arrow) admitting a spin structure, and to give a mathematically rigorous derivation of the so-called Dirac-Hestenes equation (DHE) in the case where M is a Lorentzian spacetime (the general case when M is a RCST will be discussed in another publication). To this aim we introduce the Clifford bundle of multivector fields (Cl(M,g)) and the left (Cl-Spin1,3(el)(M)) and right (Cl-Spin1,3(er)(M)) spin-Clifford bundles on the spin manifold (M,g). The relation between left ideal algebraic spinor fields (LIASF) and Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields (both fields are sections of Cl-Spin1,3(el)(M)) is clarified. We study in detail the theory of covariant derivatives of Clifford fields as well as that of left and right spin-Clifford fields. A consistent Dirac equation for a DHSF Psiis an element ofsec Cl-Spin1,3(el)(M) (denoted DECll) on a Lorentzian spacetime is found. We also obtain a representation of the DECll in the Clifford bundle Cl(M,g). It is such equation that we call the DHE and it is satisfied by Clifford fields psi(Xi)is an element ofsec Cl(M,g). This means that to each DHSF Psiis an element ofsec Cl-Spin1,3(el)(M) and spin frame Xiis an element ofsec P-Spin1,3(e)(M), there is a well-defined sum of even multivector fields psi(Xi)is an element ofsec Cl(M,g) (EMFS) associated with Psi. Such an EMFS is called a representative of the DHSF on the given spin frame. And, of course, such a EMFS (the representative of the DHSF) is not a spinor field. With this crucial distinction between a DHSF and its representatives on the Clifford bundle, we provide a consistent theory for the covariant derivatives of Clifford and spinor fields of all kinds. We emphasize that the DECll and the DHE, although related, are equations of different mathematical natures. We study also the local Lorentz invariance and the electromagnetic gauge invariance and show that only for the DHE such transformations are of the same mathematical nature, thus suggesting a possible link between them.     Pulmonary Emphysema Regional Distribution and Extent Assessed by Chest Computed Tomography Is Associated With Pulmonary Function Impairment in Patients With COPD

    Objective: This study aimed to evaluate how emphysema extent and its regional distribution quantified by chest CT are associated with clinical and functional severity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods/Design: Patients with a post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1)/forced vital capacity (FVC) < 0.70, without any other obstructive airway disease, who presented radiological evidence of emphysema on visual CT inspection were retrospectively enrolled. A Quantitative Lung Imaging (QUALI) system automatically quantified the volume of pulmonary emphysema and adjusted this volume to the measured (EmphCTLV) or predicted total lung volume (TLV) (EmphPLV) and assessed its regional distribution based on an artificial neural network (ANN) trained for this purpose. Additionally, the percentage of lung volume occupied by low-attenuation areas (LAA) was computed by dividing the total volume of regions with attenuation lower or equal to -950 Hounsfield units (HU) by the predicted [LAA (%PLV)] or measured CT lung volume [LAA (%CTLV)]. The LAA was then compared with the QUALI emphysema estimations. The association between emphysema extension and its regional distribution with pulmonary function impairment was then assessed. Results: In this study, 86 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Both EmphCTLV and EmphPLV were significantly lower than the LAA indices independently of emphysema severity. CT-derived TLV significantly increased with emphysema severity (from 6,143 ± 1,295 up to 7,659 ± 1,264 ml from mild to very severe emphysema, p < 0.005) and thus, both EmphCTLV and LAA significantly underestimated emphysema extent when compared with those values adjusted to the predicted lung volume. All CT-derived emphysema indices presented moderate to strong correlations with residual volume (RV) (with correlations ranging from 0.61 to 0.66), total lung capacity (TLC) (from 0.51 to 0.59), and FEV1 (~0.6) and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide DLCO (~0.6). The values of FEV1 and DLCO were significantly lower, and RV (p < 0.001) and TLC (p < 0.001) were significantly higher with the increasing emphysema extent and when emphysematous areas homogeneously affected the lungs. Conclusions: Emphysema volume must be referred to the predicted and not to the measured lung volume when assessing the CT-derived emphysema extension. Pulmonary function impairment was greater in patients with higher emphysema volumes and with a more homogeneous emphysema distribution.     Revisiting special relativity: A natural algebraic alternative to Minkowski spacetime

    Minkowski famously introduced the concept of a space-time continuum in 1908, merging the three dimensions of space with an imaginary time dimension ict i c t , with the unit imaginary producing the correct spacetime distance x2c2t2 x^2 - c^2 t^2 , and the results of Einstein's then recently developed theory of special relativity, thus providing an explanation for Einstein's theory in terms of the structure of space and time. As an alternative to a planar Minkowski space-time of two space dimensions and one time dimension, we replace the unit imaginary i=1 i = \sqrt{-1} , with the Clifford bivector ι=e1e2 \iota = e_1 e_2 for the plane that also squares to minus one, but which can be included without the addition of an extra dimension, as it is an integral part of the real Cartesian plane with the orthonormal basis e1 e_1 and e2 e_2 . We find that with this model of planar spacetime, using a two-dimensional Clifford multivector, the spacetime metric and the Lorentz transformations follow immediately as properties of the algebra. This also leads to momentum and energy being represented as components of a multivector and we give a new efficient derivation of Compton's scattering formula, and a simple formulation of Dirac's and Maxwell's equations. Based on the mathematical structure of the multivector, we produce a semi-classical model of massive particles, which can then be viewed as the origin of the Minkowski spacetime structure and thus a deeper explanation for relativistic effects. We also find a new perspective on the nature of time, which is now given a precise mathematical definition as the bivector of the plane.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figure

    Direct Measurement of Nuclear Dependence of Charged Current Quasielastic-like Neutrino Interactions using MINERvA

    Charged-current νμ\nu_{\mu} interactions on carbon, iron, and lead with a final state hadronic system of one or more protons with zero mesons are used to investigate the influence of the nuclear environment on quasielastic-like interactions. The transfered four-momentum squared to the target nucleus, Q2Q^2, is reconstructed based on the kinematics of the leading proton, and differential cross sections versus Q2Q^2 and the cross-section ratios of iron, lead and carbon to scintillator are measured for the first time in a single experiment. The measurements show a dependence on atomic number. While the quasielastic-like scattering on carbon is compatible with predictions, the trends exhibited by scattering on iron and lead favor a prediction with intranuclear rescattering of hadrons accounted for by a conventional particle cascade treatment. These measurements help discriminate between different models of both initial state nucleons and final state interactions used in the neutrino oscillation experiments

Modified vaccinia virus Ankara expressing antigen 85A (MVA85A) is a novel tuberculosis vaccine candidate designed to enhance responses induced by BCG. Antigen-specific interferon-γ (IFN-γ) production is greatly enhanced by MVA85A, however the variability between healthy individuals is extensive. In this study we have sought to characterize the early changes in gene expression in humans following vaccination with MVA85A and relate these to long-term immunogenicity. Two days post-vaccination, MVA85A induces a strong interferon and inflammatory response. Separating volunteers into high and low responders on the basis of T cell responses to 85A peptides measured during the trial, an expansion of circulating CD4+ CD25+ Foxp3+ cells is seen in low but not high responders. Additionally, high levels of Toll-like Receptor (TLR) 1 on day of vaccination are associated with an increased response to antigen 85A. In a classification model, combined expression levels of TLR1, TICAM2 and CD14 on day of vaccination and CTLA4 and IL2Rα two days post-vaccination can classify high and low responders with over 80% accuracy. Furthermore, administering MVA85A in mice with anti-TLR2 antibodies may abrogate high responses, and neutralising antibodies to TLRs 1, 2 or 6 or HMGB1 decrease CXCL2 production during in vitro stimulation with MVA85A. HMGB1 is released into the supernatant following atimulation with MVA85A and we propose this signal may be the trigger activating the TLR pathway. This study suggests an important role for an endogenous ligand in innate sensing of MVA and demonstrates the importance of pattern recognition receptors and regulatory T cell responses in determining the magnitude of the antigen specific immune response to vaccination with MVA85A in humans.This work was funded by the Wellcome Trust.     High-level production of violacein by the newly isolated Duganella violaceinigra str. NI28 and its impact on Staphylococcus aureus

    A violacein-producing bacterial strain was isolated and identified as a relative of Duganella violaceinigra YIM 31327 based upon phylogenetic analyses using the 16S rRNA, gyrB and vioA gene sequences and a fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis. This new strain was designated D. violaceinigra str. NI28. Although these two strains appear related based upon these analyses, the new isolate was phenotypically different from the type strain as it grew 25% faster on nutrient media and produced 45-fold more violacein. When compared with several other violacein producing strains, including Janthinobacterium lividum, D. violaceinigra str. NI28 was the best violacein producer. For instance, the crude violacein yield with D. violaceinigra str. NI28 was 6.0 mg/OD at 24 hours, a value that was more than two-fold higher than all the other strains. Finally, the antibacterial activity of D. violaceinigra str. NI28 crude violacein was assayed using several multidrug resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Addition of 30 mu M crude violacein led to a 96% loss in the initial S. aureus population while the minimum inhibitory concentration was 1.8 mu M. Consequently, this novel isolate represents a phenotypic variant of D. violaceinigra capable of producing much greater quantities of crude violacein, an antibiotic effective against multidrug resistant S. aureusopen
