Impact of Community-Based Larviciding on the Prevalence of Malaria Infection in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The use of larval source management is not prioritized by contemporary malaria control programs in sub-Saharan Africa despite historical success. Larviciding, in particular, could be effective in urban areas where transmission is focal and accessibility to Anopheles breeding habitats is generally easier than in rural settings. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a community-based microbial larviciding intervention to reduce the prevalence of malaria infection in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania. Larviciding was implemented in 3 out of 15 targeted wards of Dar es Salaam in 2006 after two years of baseline data collection. This intervention was subsequently scaled up to 9 wards a year later, and to all 15 targeted wards in 2008. Continuous randomized cluster sampling of malaria prevalence and socio-demographic characteristics was carried out during 6 survey rounds (2004-2008), which included both cross-sectional and longitudinal data (N = 64,537). Bayesian random effects logistic regression models were used to quantify the effect of the intervention on malaria prevalence at the individual level. Effect size estimates suggest a significant protective effect of the larviciding intervention. After adjustment for confounders, the odds of individuals living in areas treated with larviciding being infected with malaria were 21% lower (Odds Ratio = 0.79; 95% Credible Intervals: 0.66-0.93) than those who lived in areas not treated. The larviciding intervention was most effective during dry seasons and had synergistic effects with other protective measures such as use of insecticide-treated bed nets and house proofing (i.e., complete ceiling or window screens). A large-scale community-based larviciding intervention significantly reduced the prevalence of malaria infection in urban Dar es Salaam
Quantifying Privacy: A Novel Entropy-Based Measure of Disclosure Risk
It is well recognised that data mining and statistical analysis pose a
serious treat to privacy. This is true for financial, medical, criminal and
marketing research. Numerous techniques have been proposed to protect privacy,
including restriction and data modification. Recently proposed privacy models
such as differential privacy and k-anonymity received a lot of attention and
for the latter there are now several improvements of the original scheme, each
removing some security shortcomings of the previous one. However, the challenge
lies in evaluating and comparing privacy provided by various techniques. In
this paper we propose a novel entropy based security measure that can be
applied to any generalisation, restriction or data modification technique. We
use our measure to empirically evaluate and compare a few popular methods,

Laser-induced etching of few-layer graphene synthesized by Rapid-Chemical Vapour Deposition on Cu thin films
The outstanding electrical and mechanical properties of graphene make it very
attractive for several applications, Nanoelectronics above all. However a
reproducible and non destructive way to produce high quality, large-scale area,
single layer graphene sheets is still lacking. Chemical Vapour Deposition of
graphene on Cu catalytic thin films represents a promising method to reach this
goal, because of the low temperatures (T < 900 Celsius degrees) involved during
the process and of the theoretically expected monolayer self-limiting growth.
On the contrary such self-limiting growth is not commonly observed in
experiments, thus making the development of techniques allowing for a better
control of graphene growth highly desirable. Here we report about the local
ablation effect, arising in Raman analysis, due to the heat transfer induced by

Holographic GB gravity in arbitrary dimensions
We study the properties of the holographic CFT dual to Gauss-Bonnet gravity
in general dimensions. We establish the AdS/CFT dictionary and in
particular relate the couplings of the gravitational theory to the universal
couplings arising in correlators of the stress tensor of the dual CFT. This
allows us to examine constraints on the gravitational couplings by demanding
consistency of the CFT. In particular, one can demand positive energy fluxes in
scattering processes or the causal propagation of fluctuations. We also examine
the holographic hydrodynamics, commenting on the shear viscosity as well as the
relaxation time. The latter allows us to consider causality constraints arising

COPPER FRACTIONATION IN PROTEINS FROM PLASMA, MUSCLE AND LIVER OF NILE TILAPIA. Copper fractionation in plasma, muscle and liver of Nile tilapia was performed after protein separation by 2D-PAGE. SR XRF analysis indicated the presence of copper in three protein spots of plasma, and in two protein spots of muscle and liver, respectively. Copper ions were found to be distributed mostly in proteins that had a molar mass of less than 54 kDa and greater than 13 kat and a pI in the 5.3-9.3 range. The copper concentration bound to these proteins was determined by GFAAS which showed concentrations in the 1.20-4.82 mg g(-1) range.35349349
News discourse and readers’ comments: expanding the range of citizenship positions?
First Published May 15, 2017.Little attention has been paid to the relation between citizens’ representation in news media and citizen participation in readers’ comments, and to the roles both discourses may play in fostering public engagement in official consultation processes. This article offers a discursive analysis of these questions by focusing on how commenters, through their uses of language in connection with news texts, address the political ordering of news discourse and their positioning therein. Using Critical Discourse Analysis and other interaction-oriented forms of discourse analysis, we examine, first, the topics and the framing of voices in news coverage and, second, the interactional order, stance markers and style features of readers’ comments. Control and Characterization of Individual Grains and Grain Boundaries in Graphene Grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition
The strong interest in graphene has motivated the scalable production of high
quality graphene and graphene devices. Since large-scale graphene films
synthesized to date are typically polycrystalline, it is important to
characterize and control grain boundaries, generally believed to degrade
graphene quality. Here we study single-crystal graphene grains synthesized by
ambient CVD on polycrystalline Cu, and show how individual boundaries between
coalescing grains affect graphene's electronic properties. The graphene grains
show no definite epitaxial relationship with the Cu substrate, and can cross Cu
grain boundaries. The edges of these grains are found to be predominantly
parallel to zigzag directions. We show that grain boundaries give a significant
Raman "D" peak, impede electrical transport, and induce prominent weak
localization indicative of intervalley scattering in graphene. Finally, we
demonstrate an approach using pre-patterned growth seeds to control graphene
nucleation, opening a route towards scalable fabrication of single-crystal
