    Differential transmission of cherry rosette nepovirus by populations of Longidorus arthensis (Nematoda : Longidoridae) with a description of the association of the virus with the odontostyle of its vector

De faibles différences morphométriques ont été relevées entre les nématodes du Baselland et ceux de la région de l'Arth, mais elles sont considérées comme intraspécifiques et non interspécifiques. L'examen en microscopie électronique de fine sections de spécimens femelles ayant transmis le CRV révèle la présence de quelques particules de virus seulement adsorbées à la surface de la lumière de l'odontostyle tandis que nombre de particules sont adsorbées, fréquemment en plusieurs couches, à la surface du fourreau-guide. Il est donc suggéré que les sites actifs de rétention des nepovirus transmis par les espèces de #Longidorus soient considérés comme étant la lumière de l'odontostyle et l'espace situé entre ce dernier et le fourreau-guide de l'odontostyle.     Improving seabed cable plough performance for offshore renewable energy

    Seabed ploughing plays an important part in providing protection to subsea cables that connect offshore renewables, and the process represents a significant portion of the overall installation cost. Current models for predicting the required tow forces for seabed ploughs are based on semi-empirical methods as conventional geotechnical finite element analysis is not suited to modelling this process due to the large de-formations involved. The project described in this paper aims to develop a new material point method numerical modelling software to predict seabed plough response, which will enable new designs to be optimised. This will be validated against physical modelling, a part of which is the focus of this paper. This includes both 1g and centrifuge testing as well as new techniques such as 3D soil surface scanning. The testing also provides insights into share geometry influences on plough behaviour, and will allow improvements to existing empirical models

    Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) in layered soils: a Material Point approach

    Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) can be used to determine in-situ soil properties and represent a practical choice for site investigation offshore, especially for linear infrastructure, such as offshore wind export cables. Information gained from CPTs is key for predicting soil-structure interaction behaviour, for example when predicting the tow forces involved in seabed ploughing, as the CPT provides an analogue to the process. The numerical modelling of CPTs is challenging due to the significant distortion in the soil displaced by the penetrating cone. This means that solving this sort of problem using finite elements, although not impossible, is numerically tiresome in terms of remeshing and mapping of state variables. Therefore, in this paper we adopt the Material Point Method (MPM) to develop a CPT prediction tool in layered soils. This MPM is combined with a novel non-matching mesh frictional boundary to represent the penetrometer. The developed tool will be used to understand the response of layered soils commonly found offshore as a step towards predicting the interaction of ploughs and anchors with the seabed

    Theoretical analysis of the focusing of acoustic waves by two-dimensional sonic crystals

    Motivated by a recent experiment on acoustic lenses, we perform numerical calculations based on a multiple scattering technique to investigate the focusing of acoustic waves with sonic crystals formed by rigid cylinders in air. The focusing effects for crystals of various shapes are examined. The dependance of the focusing length on the filling factor is also studied. It is observed that both the shape and filling factor play a crucial role in controlling the focusing. Furthermore, the robustness of the focusing against disorders is studied. The results show that the sensitivity of the focusing behavior depends on the strength of positional disorders. The theoretical results compare favorably with the experimental observations, reported by Cervera, et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 023902 (2002)).Comment: 8 figure

    Hyperparathyroidism, platelet intracellular free calcium and hypertension in chronic renal failure

    Hyperparathyroidism, platelet intracellular free calcium and hypertension in chronic renal failure. To investigate possible relationships between hyperparathyroidism, alterations in intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i and hypertension in chronic renal failure, serum concentrations of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) were measured by two-site immunometric assay, and platelet ([Ca2+]i) was assessed using the fluorescent indicator fura-2. Thirty-six patients with chronic renal failure were studied, 10 with normal serum PTH concentrations (mean 8.0 ± 0.6 pmol/liter), 17 with elevated serum PTH (35.0 ± 7.2 pmol/liter) and 9 patients with elevated PTH (36.2 ±5.9 pmol/liter) who were receiving nifedipine. Platelet [Ca2+]i was increased in patients with elevated PTH, compared with those in whom PTH was normal (138 ± 16 vs. 83 ± 7 nmol/liter, P < 0.01). A linear relation was observed between serum PTH and platelet [Ca2+]i in these patients (r = 0.818, P < 0.001). In contrast, platelet [Ca2+]i was not elevated (84 ± 9 nmol/liter) in the patients with elevated PTH who were receiving nifedipine. A linear relation was also present between both serum PTH (r = 0.616, P < 0.001) and platelet [Ca2+]i (r = 0.576, P < 0.005) and mean blood pressure. Nine patients with hyperparathyroidism were restudied after treatment with the vitamin D analogue alfacalcidol. This resulted in significant decreases in serum PTH (P < 0.01), platelet [Ca2+]i (P < 0.02), and mean blood pressure (P < 0.05). These studies indicate that [Ca2+]i may be increased early in renal failure, and that this increase occurs in association with both hyperparathyroidism and hypertension. Furthermore, treatment of hyperparathyroidism with alfacalcidol may result in reductions in both [Ca2+]i and blood pressure. The lack of elevation in [Ca2+]i in nifedipine-treated patients with hyperparathyroidism suggests that, in uremia, increases in cytosolic calcium induced by PTH or other factors may be mediated in part by dihydropyridine-sensitive mechanisms

    Overture - Object-oriented tools for overset grid applications

    The Overture framework is an object-oriented environment for solving partial differential equations in two and three space dimensions. It is a collection of C++ libraries that enables the use of finite difference and finite volume methods at a level that hides the details of the associated data structures. Overture can be used to solve problems in complicated, moving geometries using the method of overlapping grids. It has support for grid generation, difference operators, boundary conditions, data-base access and graphics. Short sample code segments are presented to show the power of this approach

    Mutual Events in the Cold Classical Transneptunian Binary System Sila and Nunam

    Hubble Space Telescope observations between 2001 and 2010 resolved the binary components of the Cold Classical transneptunian object (79360) Sila-Nunam (provisionally designated 1997 CS29). From these observations we have determined the circular, retrograde mutual orbit of Nunam relative to Sila with a period of 12.50995 \pm 0.00036 days and a semimajor axis of 2777 \pm 19 km. A multi-year season of mutual events, in which the two near-equal brightness bodies alternate in passing in front of one another as seen from Earth, is in progress right now, and on 2011 Feb. 1 UT, one such event was observed from two different telescopes. The mutual event season offers a rich opportunity to learn much more about this barely-resolvable binary system, potentially including component sizes, colors, shapes, and albedo patterns. The low eccentricity of the orbit and a photometric lightcurve that appears to coincide with the orbital period are consistent with a system that is tidally locked and synchronized, like the Pluto-Charon system. The orbital period and semimajor axis imply a system mass of (10.84 \pm 0.22) \times 10^18 kg, which can be combined with a size estimate based on Spitzer and Herschel thermal infrared observations to infer an average bulk density of 0.72 +0.37 -0.23 g cm^-3, comparable to the very low bulk densities estimated for small transneptunian binaries of other dynamical classes.Comment: In press in Icaru

    Parity-Violating Interaction Effects I: the Longitudinal Asymmetry in pp Elastic Scattering

    The proton-proton parity-violating longitudinal asymmetry is calculated in the lab-energy range 0--350 MeV, using a number of different, latest-generation strong-interaction potentials--Argonne V18, Bonn-2000, and Nijmegen-I--in combination with a weak-interaction potential consisting of rho- and omega-meson exchanges--the model known as DDH. The complete scattering problem in the presence of parity-conserving, including Coulomb, and parity-violating potentials is solved in both configuration- and momentum-space. The predicted parity-violating asymmetries are found to be only weakly dependent upon the input strong-interaction potential adopted in the calculation. Values for the rho- and omega-meson weak coupling constants hρpph^{pp}_\rho and hωpph^{pp}_\omega are determined by reproducing the measured asymmetries at 13.6 MeV, 45 MeV, and 221 MeV.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Physical Review
