Calculation of NMR Properties of Solitons in Superfluid 3He-A

Superfluid 3He-A has domain-wall-like structures, which are called solitons. We calculate numerically the structure of a splay soliton. We study the effect of solitons on the nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectrum by calculating the frequency shifts and the amplitudes of the soliton peaks for both longitudinal and transverse oscillations of magnetization. The effect of dissipation caused by normal-superfluid conversion and spin diffusion is calculated. The calculations are in good agreement with experiments, except a problem in the transverse resonance frequency of the splay soliton or in magnetic-field dependence of reduced resonance frequencies.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, updated to the published versio

Effects Of Training Goals And Goal Orientation Traits On Multidimensional Training Outcomes And Performance Adaptability

    No full text
This research examined the effects of mastery vs. performance training goals and learning and performance goal orientation traits on multidimensional outcomes of training. Training outcomes included declarative knowledge, knowledge structure coherence, training performance, and self-efficacy. We also examined the unique impact of the training outcomes on performance adaptability by predicting generalization to a more difficult and complex version of the task. The experiment involved 60 trainees learning a complex computer simulation over 2 days. The research model posited independent effects for training goals relative to goal orientation traits and independent contributions of training outcomes to the performance adaptability of trainees. The findings were consistent with the proposed model. In particular, self-efficacy and knowledge structure coherence made unique contributions to the prediction of performance adaptability after controlling for prior training performance and declarative knowledge. Implications and extensions are discussed. © 2001 Academic Press

A refrigerator employing a double copper nuclear stage and a silver 3He cell is described. The apparatus has cooled superfluid 3He to 0.38 mK and the 3He sample stays below 0.5 mK for 30 hours

Measurements of the thermal time constant at the heat capacity for liquid 3He in a nuclear cooling cryostat indicate that the "anomalous" Kapitza boundary conductance to Pd sinter is proportional to the heat capacity of the liquid in both the normal and superfluid phases
