Netherlands: Steady decline in job autonomy

    No full text
Research shows that job autonomy has predominantly positive effects, such as the prevention of stress, burnout and cardiovascular disease. Employees with a good deal of autonomy generally report better well-being, are more productive, more creative, have more self-esteem and have higher work motivation (Lopes et al, 2014). Autonomy also has economic benefits with lower employee turnover and less absenteeism (Spector, 1986). Policy-makers should therefore be aware of the economic and health risks posed by declining job autonomy. Eurofound's European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) shows that, on average, job autonomy significantly declined in most European countries from 1995 to 2010. But this did not include the Netherlands and Scandinavia, as shown by Lopes et al (2014) who say that job autonomy levels in Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden are above the EU average for all groups of workers

Characterizing work-related smartphone use at home and private smartphone use at work using latent class analysis

In order to better understand these two behaviors conceptually, we aimed to (1) identify subgroups of context-incongruent smartphone users and (2) identify differences in demographic, smartphone-related, and occupational health-related characteristics among the identified subgroups. We conducted an exploratory and data-driven latent class analysis of work-related smartphone use at home and private smartphone use at work (self-reported) in a large cross-sectional sample of Dutch fulltime employees (n = 1544). Our analysis revealed that most employees engage in context-incongruent smartphone use and identified four smartphone user classes. Comparisons of frequent and infrequent context-incongruent smartphone users revealed several interesting insights regarding demographic (e.g., frequent users were younger, more likely to be married or in a relationship, and less likely to work from their employer's site), smartphone-related (e.g., frequent users were more likely to be provided a smartphone by their employer, attached more importance to their work-related and private smartphone interactions, and reported higher fear of missing out), and occupational health-related (e.g., frequent users reported only slightly higher job demands, job control, and work-home interference, but at the same time lower segmentation preferences and psychological detachment) characteristics. These findings provide insight into the wide-spread occurrence of context-incongruent smartphone use and could help to develop theory on and understand the outcomes of these modern behaviors. They could also help organizations to better understand their employees’ behavior, which is a crucial first step in policy development.17 p

Contains fulltext : 149484.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)Objectives. This study examined the relationship between on-call duty exposure (active and total on-call hours a month, number of calls per duty) and employees’ experiences of being on-call (stress due to unpredictability, ability to relax during inactive on-call periods, restrictions during on-call duties, on-call work demands, and satisfaction with compensation for on-call duties) on the one hand and fatigue, strain-based and time-based work-home interference (WHI), and perceived on-call performance difficulties (PPD) on the other hand. Methods. Cross-sectional survey data were collected among a large heterogeneous sample of Dutch employees (). The final sample consisted of 157 on-call workers (23–69 years, 71% males). Data were analyzed by means of hierarchical regression analyses (controlling for age and job characteristics). Results. Differences in on-call work exposure were not systematically related to fatigue, WHI, and PPD (all p’s ). The experience of being on-call explained a medium proportion of the variation in fatigue and strain-based WHI and a medium to large proportion of the variation in time-based WHI and PPD over and above the control variables. Conclusions. Our results suggest that it is employees’ experience of being on-call, especially the experience of stress due to the unpredictability, rather than the amount of exposure, that is related to fatigue, WHI, and perceived on-call performance difficulties.10 p

Determinanten van geregistreerd ziekteverzuim ; verschillen tussen een retrospectieve en prospectieve onderzoeksopzet

This study examines the differences in the determinants of registered long-term sickness absence when using prospectively or retrospectively gathered absence data. Two databases, the long-term sickness absence registration of the Dutch Workers Insurance Authority (UWV) and data from the Netherlands Working Conditions Survey (NWCS) 2005 and 2006 were both prospectively and retrospectively linked together. Using two regression analyses we examined the relations between personal characteristics, job characteristics, working conditions, health and retrospectively and prospectively gathered data on long-term sickness absence. The underlying question is whether these relations differ between prospective and retrospective analyses. Personal characteristics, job characteristics, working conditions and health appear associated with long-term sickness absence in the past as well as with long-term sickness absence in the future. Some working conditions are differently related with long-term sickness absence when using a retrospective or a prospective research design. Health appears to be more strongly related with long-term sickness absence history than with long-term sickness absence in the future. It is concluded that a prospective research design gives a more valid image of the predictors of long-term absenteeism than a retrospective design, but the differences are small

Can workers with chronic back pain shift from pain elimination to function restore at work? Qualitative evaluation of an innovative work related multidisciplinary programme

Introduction: Workers with chronic low back pain (LBP) mean a heavy human and social-economic burden. Their medical histories often include different treatments without attention to work-relatedness or communication with occupational health providers, leaving them passive and medicalized in (outpatient) health care. So we developed and implemented an innovative, patient-activating alternative: the multidisciplinary outpatient care (MOC) programme, including work(place) intervention and graded activity. It aims at function restore (instead of pain elimination), return to work (RTW) and coordinated communication. Objectives: To qualitatively explore how patients and health care providers perceive the programme effectiveness and which factors influence its implementation. Methods: In-depth, semi structured interview with patients and focus groups of health care providers are used, all recorded, transformed into verbatim transcript and analysed. Results: This qualitative study shows that although patients' expectations were low at the start of the program, and despite long LBP histories, including many different therapies, (primarily) directed at pain reduction, the MOC programme was successful in changing patients' goal setting from pain oriented towards function restore and RTW. The programme was therefore perceived as applicable and effective. Patient compliance was influenced by barriers - despair, supervisory and subordinate resistance at work, waiting period, medicalisation in health care - and facilitators: disciplinary motivation, protocolled communication, information supply, tailor-made exercises. For some patients the barriers were too high. Several improvement suggestions were given. Conclusions: This qualitative study shows that generally, patients and professionals perceived the multidisciplinary outpatient care programme as applicable and effective. After incorporating improvement suggestions this program seems promising for further, broader application and hypothesis testing. For those, negatively evaluating the programme, alternatives should be explored. © 2009 IOS Press. All rights reserved
