Identification of specific requirements for a NASA aerospace law information system and identification of the acquisition requirements for an aerospace law collection for the NASA law library
The study to develop, implement, and maintain a space law library and information system is summarized. The survey plan; major interviews with individuals representative of potential sources, users and producers of information related to aerospace law; and system trade-off analyses are discussed along with the NASA/RECON system capability. The NASA publications of STAR and IAA are described, and the NASA legal micro-thesaurus is included
Space law information system design, phase 2
Design alternatives were defined for the implementation of a Space Law Information System for the Office of the General Counsel, NASA. A thesaurus of space law terms was developed and a selected document sample indexed on the basis of that thesaurus. Abstracts were also prepared for the sample document set
Long term storage test of titanium material with liquid fluorine propellant
The compatibility of 6AL-4V Ti with propellant grade GF2 and LF2 at 77 K for up to 3 years was investigated. Titanium double coupons, annealed or heat treated, with 16 or 64 RMS finishes, were immersed in F2 in individual Pyrex capsules and stored under LN2 for 29 and 39 months. Pre and post immersion tests were performed on the propellant and coupons. Chemical analysis of the propellant did not reveal any significant changes due to titanium corrosion. Gravimetric, visual, microscopic, and metallurgical examination with pitting analysis did not reveal gross corrosion of the titanium although pitting appears to be greater after 39 months exposure. The increase in pit size and number raises the possibility of unpredictable crack propagation instability. Fracture toughness tests are necessary to define this possibility
Alkali oxide-tantalum oxide and alkali oxide-niobium oxide ionic conductors
A search was made for new cationic conducting phases in alkali-tantalate and niobate systems. The phase equilibrium diagrams were constructed for the six binary systems Nb2O5-LiNbO3, Nb2O5-NaNbO3, Nb2O5-KNbO3, Ta2O5-NaTaO3, Ta2O5-LiTaO3, and Ta2O5-KTaO3. Various other binary and ternary systems were also examined. Pellets of nineteen phases were evaluated (by the sponsoring agency) by dielectric loss measurements. Attempts were made to grow large crystals of eight different phases. The system Ta2O5-KTaO3 contains at least three phases which showed peaks in dielectric loss vs. temperature. All three contain structures related to the tungsten bronzes with alkali ions in non-stoichiometric crystallographic positions
Quantum phases of atomic boson-fermion mixtures in optical lattices
The zero-temperature phase diagram of a binary mixture of bosonic and
fermionic atoms in an one-dimensional optical lattice is studied in the
framework of the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. By exact numerical solution of the
associated eigenvalue problems, ground state observables and the response to an
external phase twist are evaluated. The stiffnesses under phase variations
provide measures for the boson superfluid fraction and the fermionic Drude
weight. Several distinct quantum phases are identified as function of the
strength of the repulsive boson-boson and the boson-fermion interaction.
Besides the bosonic Mott-insulator phase, two other insulating phases are
found, where both the bosonic superfluid fraction and the fermionic Drude
weight vanish simultaneously. One of these double-insulator phases exhibits a
crystalline diagonal long-range order, while the other is characterized by

Creation of macroscopic superposition states from arrays of Bose-Einstein condensates
We consider how macroscopic quantum superpositions may be created from arrays
of Bose-Einstein condensates. We study a system of three condensates in Fock
states, all with the same number of atoms and show that this has the form of a
highly entangled superposition of different quasi-momenta. We then show how, by
partially releasing these condensates and detecting an interference pattern
where they overlap, it is possible to create a macroscopic superposition of
different relative phases for the remaining portions of the condensates. We
discuss methods for confirming these superpositions.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
The Quasi-Biennial Periodicity (QBP) in velocity and intensity helioseismic observations
We looked for signatures of Quasi-Biennial Periodicity (QBP) over different
phases of solar cycle by means of acoustic modes of oscillation. Low-degree
p-mode frequencies are shown to be sensitive to changes in magnetic activity
due to the global dynamo. Recently have been reported evidences in favor of
two-year variations in p-mode frequencies. Long high-quality helioseismic data
are provided by BiSON (Birmingham Solar Oscillation Network), GONG (Global
Oscillation Network Group), GOLF (Global Oscillation at Low Frequency) and
VIRGO (Variability of Solar IRradiance and Gravity Oscillation) instruments. We
determined the solar cycle changes in p-mode frequencies for spherical degree
l=0, 1, 2 with their azimuthal components in the frequency range 2.5 mHz < nu <
3.5 mHz. We found signatures of QBP at all levels of solar activity in the
modes more sensitive to higher latitudes. The signal strength increases with
latitude and the equatorial component seems also to be modulated by the 11-year
envelope. The persistent nature of the seismic QBP is not observed in the
surface activity indices, where mid-term variations are found only time to time
and mainly over periods of high activity. This feature together with the
latitudinal dependence provides more evidences in favor of a mechanism almost
independent and different from the one that brings up to the surface the active
regions. Therefore, these findings can be used to provide more constraints on
dynamo models that consider a further cyclic component on top of the 11-year
