Reconstruction of three-dimensional porous media using generative adversarial neural networks
To evaluate the variability of multi-phase flow properties of porous media at
the pore scale, it is necessary to acquire a number of representative samples
of the void-solid structure. While modern x-ray computer tomography has made it
possible to extract three-dimensional images of the pore space, assessment of
the variability in the inherent material properties is often experimentally not
feasible. We present a novel method to reconstruct the solid-void structure of
porous media by applying a generative neural network that allows an implicit
description of the probability distribution represented by three-dimensional
image datasets. We show, by using an adversarial learning approach for neural
networks, that this method of unsupervised learning is able to generate
representative samples of porous media that honor their statistics. We
successfully compare measures of pore morphology, such as the Euler
characteristic, two-point statistics and directional single-phase permeability
of synthetic realizations with the calculated properties of a bead pack, Berea
sandstone, and Ketton limestone. Results show that GANs can be used to
reconstruct high-resolution three-dimensional images of porous media at
different scales that are representative of the morphology of the images used
to train the neural network. The fully convolutional nature of the trained
neural network allows the generation of large samples while maintaining
computational efficiency. Compared to classical stochastic methods of image
reconstruction, the implicit representation of the learned data distribution
can be stored and reused to generate multiple realizations of the pore
structure very rapidly.Comment: 21 pages, 20 figure
Nuclear structure studies with the 7Li(e,e'p) reaction
Experimental momentum distributions for the transitions to the ground state
and first excited state of 6He have been measured via the reaction
7Li(e,e'p)6He, in the missing momentum range from -70 to 260 MeV/c. They are
compared to theoretical distributions calculated with mean-field wave functions
and with variational Monte Carlo (VMC) wave functions which include strong
state-dependent correlations in both 7Li and 6He. These VMC calculations
provide a parameter-free prediction of the momentum distribution that
reproduces the measured data, including its normalization. The deduced summed
spectroscopic factor for the two transitions is 0.58 +/- 0.05, in perfect
agreement with the VMC value of 0.60. This is the first successful comparison
of experiment and ab initio theory for spectroscopic factors in p-shell nuclei.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Dirac's Observables for the Rest-Frame Instant Form of Tetrad Gravity in a Completely Fixed 3-Orthogonal Gauge
We define the {\it rest-frame instant form} of tetrad gravity restricted to
Christodoulou-Klainermann spacetimes. After a study of the Hamiltonian group of
gauge transformations generated by the 14 first class constraints of the
theory, we define and solve the multitemporal equations associated with the
rotation and space diffeomorphism constraints, finding how the cotriads and
their momenta depend on the corresponding gauge variables. This allows to find
quasi-Shanmugadhasan canonical transformation to the class of 3-orthogonal
gauges and to find the Dirac observables for superspace in these gauges.
The construction of the explicit form of the transformation and of the
solution of the rotation and supermomentum constraints is reduced to solve a
system of elliptic linear and quasi-linear partial differential equations. We
then show that the superhamiltonian constraint becomes the Lichnerowicz
equation for the conformal factor of the 3-metric and that the last gauge
variable is the momentum conjugated to the conformal factor. The gauge
transformations generated by the superhamiltonian constraint perform the
transitions among the allowed foliations of spacetime, so that the theory is
independent from its 3+1 splittings. In the special 3-orthogonal gauge defined
by the vanishing of the conformal factor momentum we determine the final Dirac
observables for the gravitational field even if we are not able to solve the
Lichnerowicz equation. The final Hamiltonian is the weak ADM energy restricted
to this completely fixed gauge.Comment: RevTeX file, 141 page
The Interstellar Environment of our Galaxy
We review the current knowledge and understanding of the interstellar medium
of our galaxy. We first present each of the three basic constituents - ordinary
matter, cosmic rays, and magnetic fields - of the interstellar medium, laying
emphasis on their physical and chemical properties inferred from a broad range
of observations. We then position the different interstellar constituents, both
with respect to each other and with respect to stars, within the general
galactic ecosystem.Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures (including 3 figures in 2 parts
Measurements of Dihadron Correlations Relative to the Event Plane in Au+Au Collisions at GeV
Dihadron azimuthal correlations containing a high transverse momentum (\pt)
trigger particle are sensitive to the properties of the nuclear medium created
at RHIC through the strong interactions occurring between the traversing parton
and the medium, i.e. jet-quenching. Previous measurements revealed a strong
modification to dihadron azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions with
respect to \pp\ and \dAu\ collisions. The modification increases with the
collision centrality, suggesting a path-length dependence to the jet-quenching
effect. This paper reports STAR measurements of dihadron azimuthal correlations
in mid-central (20-60\%) Au+Au collisions at \snn=200~GeV as a function of
the trigger particle's azimuthal angle relative to the event plane,
\phis=|\phit-\psiEP|. The azimuthal correlation is studied as a function of
both the trigger and associated particle \pt. The subtractions of the
combinatorial background and anisotropic flow, assuming Zero Yield At Minimum
(\zyam), are described. The away-side correlation is strongly modified, and the
modification varies with \phis, which is expected to be related to the
path-length that the away-side parton traverses. The pseudo-rapidity (\deta)
dependence of the near-side correlation, sensitive to long range \deta
correlations (the ridge), is also investigated. The ridge and jet-like
components of the near-side correlation are studied as a function of \phis.
The ridge appears to drop with increasing \phis while the jet-like component
remains approximately constant. ...Comment: 50 pages, 39 figures, 6 table
Strangeness Enhancement in Cu+Cu and Au+Au Collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV
We report new STAR measurements of mid-rapidity yields for the ,
, , , , ,
particles in Cu+Cu collisions at \sNN{200}, and mid-rapidity
yields for the , , particles in Au+Au at
\sNN{200}. We show that at a given number of participating nucleons, the
production of strange hadrons is higher in Cu+Cu collisions than in Au+Au
collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. We find that aspects of the
enhancement factors for all particles can be described by a parameterization
based on the fraction of participants that undergo multiple collisions
Studies of di-jet survival and surface emission bias in Au+Au collisions via angular correlations with respect to back-to-back leading hadrons
We report first results from an analysis based on a new multi-hadron
correlation technique, exploring jet-medium interactions and di-jet surface
emission bias at RHIC. Pairs of back-to-back high transverse momentum hadrons
are used for triggers to study associated hadron distributions. In contrast
with two- and three-particle correlations with a single trigger with similar
kinematic selections, the associated hadron distribution of both trigger sides
reveals no modification in either relative pseudo-rapidity or relative
azimuthal angle from d+Au to central Au+Au collisions. We determine associated
hadron yields and spectra as well as production rates for such correlated
back-to-back triggers to gain additional insights on medium properties.Comment: By the STAR Collaboration. 6 pages, 2 figure
Inclusive charged hadron elliptic flow in Au + Au collisions at = 7.7 - 39 GeV
A systematic study is presented for centrality, transverse momentum ()
and pseudorapidity () dependence of the inclusive charged hadron elliptic
flow () at midrapidity() in Au+Au collisions at
= 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27 and 39 GeV. The results obtained with
different methods, including correlations with the event plane reconstructed in
a region separated by a large pseudorapidity gap and 4-particle cumulants
(), are presented in order to investigate non-flow correlations and
fluctuations. We observe that the difference between and
is smaller at the lower collision energies. Values of , scaled by
the initial coordinate space eccentricity, , as a function
of are larger in more central collisions, suggesting stronger collective
flow develops in more central collisions, similar to the results at higher
collision energies. These results are compared to measurements at higher
energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider ( = 62.4 and 200
GeV) and at the Large Hadron Collider (Pb + Pb collisions at =
2.76 TeV). The values for fixed rise with increasing collision
energy within the range studied (). A comparison to
viscous hydrodynamic simulations is made to potentially help understand the
energy dependence of . We also compare the results to UrQMD
and AMPT transport model calculations, and physics implications on the
dominance of partonic versus hadronic phases in the system created at Beam
Energy Scan (BES) energies are discussed.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Version accepted by PR
Measurements of and Production in + Collisions at = 200 GeV
We report measurements of charmed-hadron (, ) production cross
sections at mid-rapidity in + collisions at a center-of-mass energy of
200 GeV by the STAR experiment. Charmed hadrons were reconstructed via the
hadronic decays , and their charge conjugates,
covering the range of 0.62.0 GeV/ and 2.06.0 GeV/ for
and , respectively. From this analysis, the charm-pair production cross
section at mid-rapidity is = 170 45
(stat.) (sys.) b. The extracted charm-pair cross section is
compared to perturbative QCD calculations. The transverse momentum differential
cross section is found to be consistent with the upper bound of a Fixed-Order
Next-to-Leading Logarithm calculation.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures. Revised version submitted to Phys. Rev.
