A Dialectical Basis for Software Development Tool Building
We identify typical problems in the interactions of people with current software-based systems. In particular we observe the need to expend significant on-going effort to adapt these systems to reflect changes in the world about them, the need for people to adapt their working practices to fit in with these systems, and the inflexibility of these systems when faced with unusual circumstances or the need for change. We believe that these problems follow, at least in part, from these systems being developed and evolved using mechanisms each based on one Inquiry System only. This basis leads to assumptions being embedded in the mechanisms’ analysis outputs, and in system designs and implementations. We suggest that the problems noted may be mitigated by the use of a dialectical approach to Inquiry System selection for software development, based on the work of Hegel, which places in opposition different models of a situation based on different Inquiry Systems. We claim that such a mechanism has the potential to make explicit some of the assumptions which would otherwise be embedded implicitly in the delivered system without being questioned. We outline a research programme intended to test this hypothesis, and suggest other research directions
Structural and electrical transport properties of superconducting Au{0.7}In{0.3} films: A random array of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions
The structural and superconducting properties of Au{0.7}In{0.3} films, grown
by interdiffusion of alternating Au and In layers, have been studied. The films
were found to consist of a uniform solid solution of Au{0.9}In{0.1}, with
excess In precipitated in the form of In-rich grains of various Au-In phases
(with distinct atomic compositions), including intermetallic compounds. As the
temperature was lowered, these individual grains became superconducting at a
particular transition temperature (Tc), determined primarily by the atomic
composition of the grain, before a fully superconducting state of zero
resistance was established. From the observed onset Tc, it was inferred that up
to three different superconducting phases could have formed in these
Au{0.7}In{0.3} films, all of which were embedded in a uniform Au{0.9}In{0.1}
matrix. Among these phases, the Tc of a particular one, 0.8 K, is higher than
any previously reported for the Au-In system. The electrical transport
properties were studied down to low temperatures. The transport results were
found to be well correlated with those of the structural studies. The present
work suggests that Au{0.7}In{0.3} can be modeled as a random array of
superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions. The
effect of disorder and the nature of the superconducting transition in these

A multi-start heuristic for multiplicative depth minimization of boolean circuits
In this work we propose a multi-start heuristic which aims at minimizing the multiplicative depth of boolean circuits. The multiplicative depth objective is encountered in the field of homomorphic encryption where ciphertext size depends on the number of consecutive multiplications. The heuristic is based on rewrite operators for multiplicative depth-2 paths. Even if the proposed rewrite operators are simple and easy to understand the experimental results show that they are rather powerful. The multiplicative depth of the benchmarked circuits was hugely improved. In average the obtained multiplicative depths were lower by more than 3 times than the initial ones. The proposed rewrite operators are not limited to boolean circuits and can also be used for arithmetic circuits
Identification of host cell factors required for intoxication through use of modified cholera toxin
We describe a novel labeling strategy to site-specifically attach fluorophores, biotin, and proteins to the C terminus of the A1 subunit (CTA1) of cholera toxin (CTx) in an otherwise correctly assembled and active CTx complex. Using a biotinylated N-linked glycosylation reporter peptide attached to CTA1, we provide direct evidence that ∼12% of the internalized CTA1 pool reaches the ER. We also explored the sortase labeling method to attach the catalytic subunit of diphtheria toxin as a toxic warhead to CTA1, thus converting CTx into a cytolethal toxin. This new toxin conjugate enabled us to conduct a genetic screen in human cells, which identified ST3GAL5, SLC35A2, B3GALT4, UGCG, and ELF4 as genes essential for CTx intoxication. The first four encode proteins involved in the synthesis of gangliosides, which are known receptors for CTx. Identification and isolation of the ST3GAL5 and SLC35A2 mutant clonal cells uncover a previously unappreciated differential contribution of gangliosides to intoxication by CTx.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Fellowship
Accentuating institutional brands: A multimodal analysis of the homepages of selected South African universities
In seeking to disentangle themselves from the constraints of apartheid, South African
universities have immersed themselves in an identity modification process in which they not only
seek to redress the past, but also to reposition their identities as equal opportunity and non-racial
institutions. In this paper, we investigate how the University of the Western Cape, the University
of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University have used visual and verbal semiotics to re-design
their identities on their homepages to appeal to diverse national and international clients. Using
Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA), we show how the multi-semiotic choices work together on
the homepages to give the universities differentiated, competitive, powerful and attractive brands.
We conclude that the homepages blended cultural semiotic artefacts, historical, global and transformational
discourses, and architectural landscapes to construct different brand identities that, in turn,
rebrand the universities from edifices of apartheid education to equal opportunity institutions
Medical image colorization for better visualization and segmentation
Medical images contain precious anatomical information for clinical procedures. Improved understanding of medical modality may contribute significantly in arena of medical image analysis. This paper investigates enhancement of monochromatic medical modality into colorized images. Improving the contrast of anatomical structures facilitates precise segmentation. The proposed framework starts with pre-processing to remove noise and improve edge information. Then colour information is embedded to each pixel of a subject image. A resulting image has a potential to portray better anatomical information than a conventional monochromatic image. To evaluate the performance of colorized medical modality, the structural similarity index and the peak signal to noise ratio are computed. Supremacy of proposed colorization is validated by segmentation experiments and compared with greyscale monochromatic images
Poland's 2011 Online Election Campaign: New Tools, New Professionalism, New Ways to Win Votes
This article analyzes the use of the online environment within the context of the Polish parliamentary election of 2011. Using traditional methods of content analysis, we find that parties tend to adhere to a professionalized model of campaigning, and adapting online tools to suit the objectives of the campaign. There also appears to be a recognition that their most likely visitors to these online presences would be converts, and so they attempt to mobilize supporters rather than convert browsers. New parties and candidates are more likely to target browsers, with the latter offering a more personalized experience to online visitors. Importantly, when analyzing the outcome of the contest, we find that being online matters for candidates when controlling for all other variables. Equally, the reach the candidate has, which may well influence their vote share, is dependent on offering a more personalized, representational image and having a frequently updated online presence that should encourage repeat visits. Cumulatively, we suggest the future of online campaigning must not only focus on having a presence, but on using it in a way that appeals to a range of visitors, encouraging repeat visits, and that this strategy could have a positive impact on election outcomes. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
Generating forms of media capital inside and outside a field: the strange case of David Cameron in the UK political field
As societies become more ‘mediated’ so the elevation of public figures is increasingly linked to their ability to generate a positive public profile through the mass media. Politicians, artists, film stars, authors and others each gain
professional status, in part, based on how consumer-citizens actively respond to media representations of themselves. The linking of media to individual celebrity and symbolic power is now implicit in much writing. Individuals succeed because of their personal charisma (Weber, 1948) and an innate ability to present a media personality that directly engages with large publics
(Ankersmit, 1997; Horton and Wohl, 1993; Pels, 2003; Street, 2003). Alternatively, one’s symbolic image is primarily manufactured by promotional professionals (Boorstin, 1962; Evans, 2005; Franklin, 2004; Hall Jamieson, 1996; Lilleker and LeesMarshment, 2006) and parts of themedia industry itself (Evans and Hesmondhalgh, 2005; Turner, 2004). However one’s public image develops, media exposure then bestows a ‘primary definer’ status on those placed in positions of power thus drawing additional media coverage (Bennett,
