    Polish accession to the European Union: participating institutions

    In May 2014 it was aready ten years since Poland's accession to the European Union. The accession was preceded by a long period of political action and negotiations between the Polish and the EU institutions. The process of integration was extremely complex. It covered almost all areas of economic, legal and civil aspects of the aspiring country's economy, in which all necessary requirements had to be met. The aim of the article was to present the institutional framework created for efficient implementation of the process of accession. The considerations involved especially an institutional method. The research resulted in poining out both the actually efficient and less efficient bodies participating in the process of integration

    The motion of the freely falling chain tip

    The dynamics of the tip of the falling chain is analyzed. Results of laboratory experiments are presented and compared with results of numerical simulations. Time dependences of the velocity and the acceleration of the chain tip for a number of different initial conformations of the chain are determined.     Characterization of a Hall Effect Thruster Using Thermal Imaging

    A Hall thruster uses ionized xenon as a propellant for space propulsion applications. The heat produced by thruster components and the xenon plasma transfers to space and the spacecraft, impacting thruster and spacecraft design, as well as thruster efficiency and lifetime. Therefore, thermal information was gathered and analyzed in order to better understand the thermal characteristics of an operating thruster and to provide data applicable to improving the thruster efficiency and lifetime. This paper contains analysis of thruster temperatures obtained using a commercially available FLIR A40M thermographic imager in order to characterize a Busek Inc. 200W Hall Effect Thruster operating in Chamber 6 at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Edwards AFB, CA. This method is non-intrusive in that the thruster is viewed from outside the chamber through a zinc selenide window and provides temperature data on the entire visible area of the thruster for output to a computer for further processing. Maximum temperatures observed were above 773 K on the alumina plasma sprayed portion of the cathode, the anode, and on the thruster body near the exit plane. Magnet core winding temperature varied from 620 K near the exit plane to 475 K near the rear of the thruster. If these temperatures are near the magnet core temperature, it suggests they are not near the Curie temperature for iron of 1043 K or the Curie temperature of 858 K of iron alloyed with nickel. Initial heating rates of up to 138 K/min and initial cooling rates of up to 218 K/min were observed. The steady state temperature images and the heating data indicated a possible interaction between xenon and the thruster components

    In order to fully exploit the physics potential of the future high energy e+ e- linear collider, a Vertex Tracker providing high resolution track reconstruction is required. Hybrid pixel sensors are an attractive technology due to their fast read-out capabilities and radiation hardness. A novel pixel detector layout with interleaved cells between the readout nodes has been developed to improve the single point resolution.     The use of computer-assisted image analysis in measuring the histological structure of the human median nerve

    Background and aim: The aim of this study was to assess the histological structure of the median nerve and its motor branch (number and arrangement of nerve bundles) and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve (on the level of the carpal tunnel). Material and methods: This study has been conducted using median nerves dissected from cadavers stored in a 10% solution of formaldehyde at the Department of Anatomy of the Jagiellonian University Medical College and cadavers from the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Jagiellonian University Medical College. After dissection the median nerves were stained with haematoxylin and eosin and histological slides were prepared. These were later photographed (16 x magnification) and analysed using ImageJ software. The research protocol was approved by the Jagiellonian University Ethics Committee (registry KBET/209/B/2002). Results: The studied group comprised 8 women and 22 men (age between 23–92 years), yielding a total of 60 median nerves (30 right vs. 30 left). In 4 (6.67%) cases an accessory motor branch was found. The mean CSA of the median nerve was 0.19 cm2. The median nerves from the right hand had a statistically larger CSA (p = 0.017). The number of nerve bundles in the median nerve varied between 13 to 38 and in the motor branch of the median nerve between 4 to 14. Conclusions: The nerve bundles of the median nerve, at the level of the carpal tunnel, display no particular type of arrangement. ImageJ software proved useful in the assessment of the histological structure of the human median nerve and its motor branch

Hybrid Silicon pixel sensors are an attractive sensor technology option due to their read-out speed and radiation hardness, favoured in the high rate TESLA environment, but have been so far limited by the achievable single point space resolution. A novel layout of pixel detectors with interleaved cells to improve their spatial resolution is introduced and the results of the characterisation of a first set of test structures are discussed.     Median nerve thenar motor branch anatomical variations

    Aim. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of the different types of the median nerve thenar motor branch and to compare them with literature data.Materials and Methods. This study has been conducted using median nerves dissected from cadavers stored in a 10% solution of formaldehyde at the Department of Anatomy, Jagiellonian University Medical College (JUMC) and cadavers from the Department of Forensic Medicine (JUMC). The research protocol was approved by the Jagiellonian University Ethics Committee (registry KBET/209/B/2002).Results. The studied group comprised of 8 (26,7%) women and 22 men (age between 23-92 years), yielding a total of 60 thenar motor branches (30 right vs. 30 left). Forty-seven (78,3%) nerves were classified as extraligamentous, 12 (20%) were subligamentous and 1 (1,7%) was transligamentous. As for the side of origin of the thenar motor branch in 45 cases (75%) it was the radial side and in 2 cases (3,33%) it was the ulnar side.Conclusions. The obtained results confirm that the extraligamentous type of the thenar motor branch is the most common and that the ulnar origin of the thenar motor branch is the rarest

    The mandible and its foramen: anatomy, anthropology, embryology and resulting clinical implications

    The aim of this paper is to summarise the knowledge about the anatomy, embryology and anthropology of the mandible and the mandibular foramen and also to highlight the most important clinical implications of the current studies regarding anaesthesia performed in the region of the mandible. An electronic journal search was undertaken to identify all the relevant studies published in English. The search included MEDLINE and EMBASE databases and years from 1950 to 2012. The subject search used a combination of controlled vocabulary and free text based on the search strategy for MEDLINE using key words: ‘mandible’, ‘mandibular’, ‘foramen’, ‘anatomy’, ‘embryology’, ‘anthropology’, and ‘mental’. The reference lists of all the relevant studies and existing reviews were screened for additional relevant publications. Basing on relevant manuscripts, this short review about the anatomy, embryology and anthropology of the mandible and the mandibular foramen was written
