Circuit counts pulses and indicates time of occurrence of slow pulses

    Get PDF
Counter includes one section which counts the first several pulses, and a second section which counts pulses from a clock between the beginning of a sampling interval and the receipt of the first pulse by the circuit. The number of clock pulses indicates receipt time of the first pulse

Credit card fraud detection by adaptive neural data mining

    Get PDF
The prevention of credit card fraud is an important application for prediction techniques. One major obstacle for using neural network training techniques is the high necessary diagnostic quality: Since only one financial transaction of a thousand is invalid no prediction success less than 99.9% is acceptable. Due to these credit card transaction proportions complete new concepts had to be developed and tested on real credit card data. This paper shows how advanced data mining techniques and neural network algorithm can be combined successfully to obtain a high fraud coverage combined with a low false alarm rate

Theoretical Genetics - Paper Presented at the Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting

    Get PDF
The first task of genetics was to determine the laws which govern the transmission of characters from parent to offspring and to locate the material basis for this regular behavior. The task was quickly accomplished so that 20 years ago the gene-chromosome theory of heredity was well established; it has since been the ABC of genetics and provides the framework upon which more recent work rests. The substance of the theory, as you will recall, is that the characters observed in an adult individual are determined by genes which are arranged in a linear order in the chromosomes

A survey of the marine nematodes of Chesapeake Bay, Maryland

    Get PDF
The study here reported is a survey of the most common non-parasitic nematode families of Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, with descriptions and figures, so that ecological workers and students of invertebrate zoology may be encouraged not to pass over this highly interesting and abundant invertebrate phylum. This survey is not a complete account of the free-living nematode population of the Bay, however, since only the middle section of the Bay was sampled and since the collections were not made systematically throughout the year. The physical and chemical factors of Chesapeake Bay may be found in several publications of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Solomons Island, Maryland, and in the records of the Chesapeake Bay Institute, Annapolis, Maryland

Possible magnetic-field-induced voltage and thermopower in diluted magnetic semiconductors

In diluted magnetic semiconductors, the carrier concentration and the magnetization of local moments are strongly coupled, since the magnetic interaction is mediated by the carriers. It is predicted that this coupling leads to an electric polarization due to an applied magnetic-field gradient and to the appearance of a magnetic-field-dependent voltage. An expression for this voltage is derived within Landau theory and its magnitude is estimated for (Ga,Mn)As. Furthermore, a large contribution to the thermopower based on the same mechanism is predicted. The role of fluctuations is also discussed. These predictions hold both if the magnetization is uniform and if it shows stripe-like modulations, which are possible at lower temperatures.Comment: 6 pages revtex, 5 figure

Revision of New World \u3ci\u3eCosmorrhyncha\u3c/i\u3e Meyrick, 1913 (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Olethreutinae), with descriptions of five new species

Although well studied in the Afrotropical Region, the genus Cosmorrhyncha Meyrick, 1913 (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Olethreutinae), has received little attention in the New World, where it apparently is restricted to the Neotropics from Guatemala south to Paraguay. Seven species are recognized, five of which are described as new: C. tonsana (Walker, 1863) (Type locality: Brazil); C. ocelliferana (Walker, 1863) (TL: Brazil); C. landryi Brown and Razowski, sp. n. (TL: French Guiana); C. parintina Brown and Razowski, sp. n. (TL: Brazil); C. macrospina Brown and Razowski, sp. n. (TL: Brazil); C. albistrigulana Brown and Razowski, sp. n. (TL: Costa Rica); and C. osana Brown and Razowski, sp. n. (TL: Costa Rica). Our circumscription of C. ocelliferana is rather broad and most likely encompasses a species complex rather than a single entity. Larvae of C. tonsana have been reared from Picramnia latifolia Tul. (Picramniaceae), Dialium guianense (Aubl.) Sandwith (Fabaceae), and Machaerium seemannii Benth. ex Seem. (Fabaceae) in Costa Rica; and those of C. albistrigulana from Dialium guianense (Fabaceae)
