    Three dimensional lower bound solutions for the stability of plate anchors in sand

    Soil anchors are commonly used as foundation systems for structures that require uplift or lateral resistance. These types of structures include transmission towers, sheet pile walls and buried pipelines. Although anchors are typically complex in shape (e.g. drag or helical anchors), many previous analyses idealise the anchor as a continuous strip under plane strain conditions. This assumption provides numerical advantages and the problem can solved in two dimensions. In contrast to recent numerical studies, this paper applies three dimensional numerical limit analysis and axi-symetrical displacement finite element analysis to evaluate the effect of anchor shape on the pullout capacity of horizontal anchors in sand. The anchor is idealised as either square or circular in shape. Results are presented in the familiar form of breakout factors based on various anchor shapes and embedment depths, and are also compared with existing numerical and empirical solutions

    Meta-Sociology: Doings and Reflections

    I have called my remarks "Meta-Sociology: Doings and Reflections." Like many of you, I am not quite sure what "meta" means, but, knowing that George Ritzer was going to address a related theme, I was depending on him to give you the in-depth interpretation. I will settle for the shallow view. I think I got my first sense of this concept from watching the Gary Shandling Show. You recall how Gary often goes off the TV set and watches the other characters on the TV monitor to find out what they are saying and In the scenes in which he is not involved. To make a "meta"approach is to step out of doing the usual kinds of things we do--the teaching, the research, the advising--and instead to reflect on what we are doing: to attempt to make sense of what'we are up to when we teach, inquire, advise, and so on. So I am here not to talk about my research but about why I decided to do the research that I did; I am here not to present my work but to talk about what working means to me; I am here not to do sociology, but to talk about doing sociology

    Optimal Moments for the Analysis of Peculiar Velocity Surveys II: Testing

    Analyses of peculiar velocity surveys face several challenges, including low signal--to--noise in individual velocity measurements and the presence of small--scale, nonlinear flows. This is the second in a series of papers in which we describe a new method of overcoming these problems by using data compression as a filter with which to separate large--scale, linear flows from small--scale noise that can bias results. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method using realistic catalogs of galaxy velocities drawn from N--body simulations. Our tests show that a likelihood analysis of simulated catalogs that uses all of the information contained in the peculiar velocities results in a bias in the estimation of the power spectrum shape parameter Γ\Gamma and amplitude ÎČ\beta, and that our method of analysis effectively removes this bias. We expect that this new method will cause peculiar velocity surveys to re--emerge as a useful tool to determine cosmological parameters.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figure

In an embodiment, the adapter is comprised of an elongated collet member having a longitudinal axis comprised of a first collet member end, a second collet member end, an outer collet member surface, and an inner collet member surface. The inner collet member surface at the first collet member end is used to engage the connector. The outer collet member surface at the first collet member end is tapered for a predetermined first length at a predetermined taper angle.
