    A mesocosm experiment investigating the effects of substratum quality and wave exposure on the survival of fish eggs

    In a mesocosm experiment, the attachment of bream (Abramis brama) eggs to spawning substrata with and without periphytic biofilm coverage and their subsequent survival with and without low-intensity wave exposure were investigated. Egg attachment was reduced by 73% on spawning substrata with a natural periphytic biofilm, compared to clean substrata. Overall, this initial difference in egg numbers persisted until hatching. The difference in egg numbers was even increased in the wave treatment, while it was reduced in the no-wave control treatment. Exposure to a low-intensity wave regime affected egg development between the two biofilm treatments differently. Waves enhanced egg survival on substrata without a biofilm but reduced the survival of eggs on substrata with biofilm coverage. In the treatment combining biofilm-covered substrata and waves, no attached eggs survived until hatching.     Fast iterative solution of reaction-diffusion control problems arising from chemical processes

    PDE-constrained optimization problems, and the development of preconditioned iterative methods for the efficient solution of the arising matrix system, is a field of numerical analysis that has recently been attracting much attention. In this paper, we analyze and develop preconditioners for matrix systems that arise from the optimal control of reaction-diffusion equations, which themselves result from chemical processes. Important aspects in our solvers are saddle point theory, mass matrix representation and effective Schur complement approximation, as well as the outer (Newton) iteration to take account of the nonlinearity of the underlying PDEs

    A plant-based diet, atherogenesis, and coronary artery disease prevention.

    A plant-based diet is increasingly becoming recognized as a healthier alternative to a diet laden with meat. Atherosclerosis associated with high dietary intake of meat, fat, and carbohydrates remains the leading cause of mortality in the US. This condition results from progressive damage to the endothelial cells lining the vascular system, including the heart, leading to endothelial dysfunction. In addition to genetic factors associated with endothelial dysfunction, many dietary and other lifestyle factors, such as tobacco use, high meat and fat intake, and oxidative stress, are implicated in atherogenesis. Polyphenols derived from dietary plant intake have protective effects on vascular endothelial cells, possibly as antioxidants that prevent the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein. Recently, metabolites of L-carnitine, such as trimethylamine-N-oxide, that result from ingestion of red meat have been identified as a potential predictive marker of coronary artery disease (CAD). Metabolism of L-carnitine by the intestinal microbiome is associated with atherosclerosis in omnivores but not in vegetarians, supporting CAD benefits of a plant-based diet. Trimethylamine-N-oxide may cause atherosclerosis via macrophage activation. We suggest that a shift toward a plant-based diet may confer protective effects against atherosclerotic CAD by increasing endothelial protective factors in the circulation while reducing factors that are injurious to endothelial cells. The relative ratio of protective factors to injurious endothelial exposure may be a novel approach to assessing an objective dietary benefit from a plant-based diet.     Manufacture and Sale of Cultured Butter

    Cultured butter, because of its pleasing and distinctive flavor, is finding new favor among consumers. Likewise, because of improved technology and an abundance of high quality raw materials readily available, it is now considered to be dependable butter and is winning new friends among butter dealers. The flavor in cultured butter is produced by adding from 1 to 3% of a milk culture of flavor producing bacteria directly to the butter during the working process. This gives a pleasing flavor to the butter which is maintained or increases slightly when the butter is held at household refrigerator temperatures for periods of 1 or 2 months. It is also maintained for at least 6 months when stored at 0°F. Consumers in Brookings and Sioux Falls showed a definite preference for butter with culture flavor over other butter and oleomargarine. Other consumer tests have given similar results. Butter quality in South Dakota has shown marked improvement since 1950. In that year a survey showed 81% of the butter was Grade B and 19% was Grade C. In 1959 the results of a similar survey were 22.3% Grade AA and A, 55.1% Grade B and 22.6% Grade C. Further improvement is possible and probable. The use of culture in more of Grades AA and A might result in increased demand for these grades of butter. Sales of this kind of butter have been increasing in this area

    Inelastic Diffraction and Spectroscopy of Very Weakly Bound Clusters

    We study the coherent inelastic diffraction of very weakly bound two body clusters from a material transmission grating. We show that internal transitions of the clusters can lead to new separate peaks in the diffraction pattern whose angular positions determine the excitation energies. Using a quantum mechanical approach to few body scattering theory we determine the relative peak intensities for the diffraction of the van der Waals dimers (D_2)_2 and H_2-D_2. Based on the results for these realistic examples we discuss the possible applications and experimental challenges of this coherent inelastic diffraction technique.Comment: 15 pages + 5 figures. J.     Electron correlations for ground state properties of group IV semiconductors

    Valence energies for crystalline C, Si, Ge, and Sn with diamond structure have been determined using an ab-initio approach based on information from cluster calculations. Correlation contributions, in particular, have been evaluated in the coupled electron pair approximation (CEPA), by means of increments obtained for localized bond orbitals and for pairs and triples of such bonds. Combining these results with corresponding Hartree-Fock (HF) data, we recover about 95 % of the experimental cohesive energies. Lattice constants are overestimated at the HF level by about 1.5 %; correlation effects reduce these deviations to values which are within the error bounds of this method. A similar behavior is found for the bulk modulus: the HF values which are significantly too high are reduced by correlation effects to about 97 % of the experimental values.Comment: 22 pages, latex, 2 figure

    Ab initio wavefunction based methods for excited states in solids: correlation corrections to the band structure of ionic oxides

    Ab initio wavefunction based methods are applied to the study of electron correlation effects on the band structure of oxide systems. We choose MgO as a prototype closed-shell ionic oxide. Our analysis is based on a local Hamiltonian approach and performed on finite fragments cut from the infinite solid. Localized Wannier functions and embedding potentials are obtained from prior periodic Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations. We investigate the role of various electron correlation effects in reducing the HF band gap and modifying the band widths. On-site and nearest-neighbor charge relaxation as well as long-range polarization effects are calculated. Whereas correlation effects are essential for computing accurate band gaps, we found that they produce smaller changes on the HF band widths, at least for this material. Surprisingly, a broadening effect is obtained for the O 2p valence bands. The ab initio data are in good agreement with the energy gap and band width derived from thermoreflectance and x-ray photoemission experiments. The results show that the wavefunction based approach applied here allows for well controlled approximations and a transparent identification of the microscopic processes which determine the electronic band structure

    Correlation effects in ionic crystals: I. The cohesive energy of MgO

    High-level quantum-chemical calculations, using the coupled-cluster approach and extended one-particle basis sets, have been performed for (Mg2+)n (O2-)m clusters embedded in a Madelung potential. The results of these calculations are used for setting up an incremental expansion for the correlation energy of bulk MgO. This way, 96% of the experimental cohesive energy of the MgO crystal is recovered. It is shown that only 60% of the correlation contribution to the cohesive energy is of intra-ionic origin, the remaining part being caused by van der Waals-like inter-ionic excitations.Comment: LaTeX, 20 pages, no figure
