    Effects of Stand Structure, Browsing, and Biophysical Conditions on Regeneration Following Mountain Pine Beetle in Mixed Lodgepole Pine and Aspen Forests of the Southern Rockies

    Aspen (Populus tremuloides) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) co-occur in the southern Rocky Mountains (USA), where mountain pine beetle (MPB, Dendroctonus ponderosae) has caused extensive lodgepole pine mortality since the late 1990s. Both species excel in post-disturbance high-light environments, but lodgepole pine has generally been thought to establish poorly on undisturbed seedbeds, and aspen suckering may be inhibited by intact aspen overstory. We ask whether lodgepole pine and aspen will regenerate in sufficient quantities to revegetate these forests. We visited a random sample of aspen and lodgepole pine stands across the affected landscape in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming to measure regeneration and overstory mortality. Lodgepole pine regeneration is occurring in 85% of stands, and most stands have \u3e550 stems ha−1. The median aspen sucker density was 6175 stems ha−1. Surprisingly, neither lodgepole pine nor aspen regeneration density was related to overstory mortality level. Animal damage is currently affecting aspen in these forests. Over 50% of stands had damage to 60% or more of their suckers, but 30% of stands had \u3c20% of their stems damaged. Browsed stems were significantly shorter for their ages and were shorter than the 2.5-m height threshold for possible elk browsing. However, the results suggest that sufficient quantities of down lodgepole pine may protect aspen from damage and allow aspen to successfully recruit to the overstory. Multiple regression analysis showed that down lodgepole pine basal area, followed by browsing pressure, were the most important predictors of sucker height and the proportion of suckers browsed. Although 15% of stands had no lodgepole pine regeneration, aspen and lodgepole pine forests are generally regenerating despite animal browsing on aspen. This study is the first to present a regional perspective on regeneration in MPB-affected lodgepole pine and aspen forests, and overall, intervention does not seem necessary to ensure a mix of both species in the future

    Nanometer-resolution measurement and modeling of lateral variations of the effective work function at the bilayer Pt/Al/SiO2 interface

    A ballistic electron emission microscopy (BEEM) comparison of the dependence on gate voltage of the average energy barrier of a metal bilayer Pt/Al/ SiO2 /Si sample and a Pt/ SiO2 /Si sample suggests that the metal/oxide interface of the Pt/Al/ SiO2 /Si sample is laterally inhomogeneous at nm length scales. However, BEEM images of the bilayer sample do not show significantly larger lateral variations than observed on a (uniform) Pt/ SiO2 /Si sample, indicating that any inhomogeneous "patches" of lower-energy barrier height have size smaller than the lateral resolution of BEEM, estimated for these samples to be ???10nm. Finite element electrostatic simulations of an assumed inhomogeneous interface with nm size patches of different effective work function can fit the experimental data of the bilayer sample much better than an assumed homogenous interface, indicating that the bilayer film is laterally inhomogeneous at the nm scale.open2

    Expression of Chemoresistance-Related Genes and Heat Shock Protein 72 in Hyperthermic Isolated Limb Perfusion of Malignant Melanoma: An Experimental Study

    Hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion (HILP) is considered an established treatment for multiple locoregional intransit metastases in malignant melanoma of the extremities. Various mechanisms such as the expression of chemoresistance genes and heat shock proteins by the tumor may be responsible for varying response rates and locoregional recurrences of the treatment. The aim of the experimental animal study was to investigate the direct impact of HILP on such mechanisms of resistance. Tissue temperature, administration of the cytostatic drug, and duration of perfusion were varied. Expression of the chemoresistance genes mdr1, mrp1, mrp2, and lrp and of heat shock protein 72 (HSP72) in the tumor tissue was analysed using RT-PCR and western blot analysis. The untreated SK-MEL-3 tumor expressed mdr1, mrp1, and lrp, but not mrp2. Neither variation of temperature, administration of the cytostatic drug, nor duration of perfusion changed the expression of this “resistance pattern”. In contrast to the cytostatic drug, hyperthermia causes a persistent induction of HSP72. Both observations could offer a potential explanation for failure of HILP in malignant melanoma

    Optimizing of preoperative computed tomography for diagnosis in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background and Objective</p> <p>This study evaluates whether Computer Tomography is an effective procedure for preoperative staging of patients with Peritoneal Carcinomatosis.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>A sample of 37 patients was analyzed with contrast enhanced abdominal Computer Tomography, followed by surgical staging. All Computer Tomography scans were evaluated 3 times by 2 radiologists with one radiologist reviewing 2 times. The efficacy of Computer Tomography was evaluated using the Spearman correlation coefficient. Correlations were analyzed by abdominopelvic region to assess results of the Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Index (PCI) aggregating the 13 regions. Surgical findings were compared to radiological findings.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Results indicate high correlations between the surgical and radiological Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Indices. Analyses of the intra-class correlation between the first and second reading of one radiologist suggest high intra-observer reliability. Correlations by abdominopelvic region show higher values in the upper and middle regions and relatively lower values in the lower regions and the small bowel (correlation coefficients range between 0.418 and 0.726, p < 0.010; sensitivities range between 50% and 96%; and specificities range between 62% and 100%).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Computer Tomography represents an effective procedure in the preoperative staging of patients with PC. However, results by abdominopelvic region show lower correlation, therefore suggest lower efficacy. These results are supported by analyses of sensitivity and accuracy by lesion size. This suggests that Computer Tomography is an effective procedure for pre-operative staging but less for determining a tumor's accurate extent.</p

    Nature of complex singularities for the 2D Euler equation

    A detailed study of complex-space singularities of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation is performed in the short-time asymptotic r\'egime when such singularities are very far from the real domain; this allows an exact recursive determination of arbitrarily many spatial Fourier coefficients. Using high-precision arithmetic we find that the Fourier coefficients of the stream function are given over more than two decades of wavenumbers by \hat F(\k) = C(\theta) k^{-\alpha} \ue ^ {-k \delta(\theta)}, where \k = k(\cos \theta, \sin \theta). The prefactor exponent α\alpha, typically between 5/2 and 8/3, is determined with an accuracy better than 0.01. It depends on the initial condition but not on θ\theta. The vorticity diverges as sβs^{-\beta}, where α+β=7/2\alpha+\beta= 7/2 and ss is the distance to the (complex) singular manifold. This new type of non-universal singularity is permitted by the strong reduction of nonlinearity (depletion) which is associated to incompressibility. Spectral calculations show that the scaling reported above persists well beyond the time of validity of the short-time asymptotics.     Universal conductance fluctuations in three dimensional metallic single crystals of Si

    In this paper we report the measurement of conductance fluctuations in single crystals of Si made metallic by heavy doping (n \approx 2-2.5n_c, n_c being critical composition at Metal-Insulator transition). Since all dimensions (L) of the samples are much larger than the electron phase coherent length L_\phi (L/L_\phi \sim 10^3), our system is truly three dimensional. Temperature and magnetic field dependence of noise strongly indicate the universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) as predominant source of the observed magnitude of noise. Conductance fluctuations within a single phase coherent region of L_\phi^3 was found to be saturated at \approx (e^2/h)^2. An accurate knowledge of the level of disorder, enables us to calculate the change in conductance \delta G_1 due to movement of a single scatterer as \delta G_1 \sim e^2/h, which is \sim 2 orders of magnitude higher than its theoretically expected value in 3D systems.Comment: Text revised version. 4 eps figs unchange

    Histological response of peritoneal carcinomatosis after hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC) in experimental investigations

    BACKGROUND: In selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal cancer prognosis can be improved by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) after cytoreductive surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tumor response of peritoneal carcinomatosis in tumor-bearing rats treated with HIPEC. METHODS: CC531 colon carcinoma (2,5 × 10(6 )cells), implanted intraperitoneally in Wag/Rija rats, was treated by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. After 10 days of tumor growth the animals were randomized into five groups of six animals each: group I: control (n = 6), group II: sham operated animals (n = 6), group III: hyperthermic intraperitoneal perfusion (HIP) without cytostatic drugs, group IV: HIPEC with mitomycin C in a concentration of 15 mg/m(2 )(n = 6), group V: mitomycin C i.p. alone in a concentration of 10 mg/m(2 )(n = 6). After 10 days the extent of tumor spread and histological outcome were analysed by autopsy. RESULTS: All control animals developed extensive intraperitoneal tumor growth. Histological tumor load was significantly reduced in group III and group V and was lowest in group IV. In group II tumor load was significantly higher than in group I. Implanted metastases were significantly decreased in group IV compared with group I and group II. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that HIPEC is an effective treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis in this animal model. HIPEC reduced macroscopic and microscopic intraperitoneal tumor spread

    Nonexistence of self-similar singularities for the 3D incompressible Euler equations

    We prove that there exists no self-similar finite time blowing up solution to the 3D incompressible Euler equations. By similar method we also show nonexistence of self-similar blowing up solutions to the divergence-free transport equation in Rn\Bbb R^n.
