Multipole polarizability of a graded spherical particle

We have studied the multipole polarizability of a graded spherical particle in a nonuniform electric field, in which the conductivity can vary radially inside the particle. The main objective of this work is to access the effects of multipole interactions at small interparticle separations, which can be important in non-dilute suspensions of functionally graded materials. The nonuniform electric field arises either from that applied on the particle or from the local field of all other particles. We developed a differential effective multipole moment approximation (DEMMA) to compute the multipole moment of a graded spherical particle in a nonuniform external field. Moreover, we compare the DEMMA results with the exact results of the power-law graded profile and the agreement is excellent. The extension to anisotropic DEMMA will be studied in an Appendix.Comment: LaTeX format, 2 eps figures, submitted for publication

Quantum interference in deformed carbon nanotube waveguides

Quantum interference (QI) in two types of deformed carbon nanotubes (CNTs), i.e., axially stretched and AFM tip-deformed CNTs, has been investigated by the pi-electron only and four-orbital tight-binding (TB) method. It is found that the rapid conductance oscillation (RCO) period is very sensitive to the applied strains, and decreases in an inverse proportion to the deformation degree, which could be used as a powerful experimental tool to detect precisely the deformation degree of the deformed CNTs. Also, the sigma-pi coupling effect is found to be negligible under axially stretched strain, while it works on the transport properties of the tip-deformed CNTs.Comment: 14 pages and 5 figure

The structure of parafermion vertex operator algebras

    Get PDF
It is proved that the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to the irreducible highest weight module for the affine Kac-Moody algebra A_1^{(1)} of level k coincides with a certain W-algebra. In particular, a set of generators for the parafermion vertex operator algebra is determined.Comment: 12 page

Numerical simulations of negative-index refraction in wedge-shaped metamaterials

A wedge-shaped structure made of split-ring resonators (SRR) and wires is numerically simulated to evaluate its refraction behavior. Four frequency bands, namely, the stop band, left-handed band, ultralow-index band, and positive-index band, are distinguished according to the refracted field distributions. Negative phase velocity inside the wedge is demonstrated in the left-handed band and the Snell's law is conformed in terms of its refraction behaviors in different frequency bands. Our results confirmed that negative index of refraction indeed exists in such a composite metamaterial and also provided a convincing support to the results of previous Snell's law experiments.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

Systematic analysis of group identification in stock markets

We propose improved methods to identify stock groups using the correlation matrix of stock price changes. By filtering out the marketwide effect and the random noise, we construct the correlation matrix of stock groups in which nontrivial high correlations between stocks are found. Using the filtered correlation matrix, we successfully identify the multiple stock groups without any extra knowledge of the stocks by the optimization of the matrix representation and the percolation approach to the correlation-based network of stocks. These methods drastically reduce the ambiguities while finding stock groups using the eigenvectors of the correlation matrix.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

R-parity as a residual gauge symmetry : probing a theory of cosmological dark matter

    Get PDF
We present a non-supersymmetric scenario in which the R-parity symmetry RP=(1)3(BL)+2sR_P = (-1)^{3(B-L)+2s} arises as a result of spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking, leading to a viable Dirac fermion WIMP dark matter candidate. Direct detection in nuclear recoil experiments probes dark matter masses around 252-5 TeV for MZ34M_{Z^{\prime}} \sim 3-4 TeV consistent with searches at the LHC, while lepton flavor violation rates and flavor changing neutral currents in neutral meson systems lie within reach of upcoming experiments.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

Rabi oscillations in a quantum dot-cavity system coupled to a non-zero temperature phonon bath

We study a quantum dot strongly coupled to a single high-finesse optical microcavity mode. We use a rotating wave approximation method, commonly used in ion-laser interactions, tegether with the Lamb-Dicke approximation to obtain an analytic solution of this problem. The decay of Rabi oscillations because of the electron-phonon coupling are studied at arbitrary temperature and analytical expressions for the collapse and revival times are presented. Analyses without the rotating wave approximation are presented by means of investigating the energy spectrum.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures; Revised versio

Aspherical supernova explosions and formation of compact black hole low-mass X-ray binaries

It has been suggested that black-hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BHLMXBs) with short orbital periods may have evolved from BH binaries with an intermediate-mass secondary, but the donor star seems to always have higher effective temperatures than measured in BHLMXBs (Justham, Rappaport & Podsiadlowski 2006). Here we suggest that the secondary star is originally an intermediate-mass (\sim 2-5 M_{\sun}) star, which loses a large fraction of its mass due to the ejecta impact during the aspherical SN explosion that produced the BH. The resulted secondary star could be of low-mass (\la 1 M_{\sun}). Magnetic braking would shrink the binary orbit, drive mass transfer between the donor and the BH, producing a compact BHLMXB.Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

Contribution of Scalar Loops to the Three-Photon Decay of the Z

I corrected 3 mistakes from the first version: that were an omitted Feynman integration in the function f^3_{ij}, a factor of 2 in front of log f^3_{ij} in eq.2 and an overall factor of 2 in Fig.1 c). The final result is changed drastically. Doing an expansion in the Higgs mass I show that the matrix element is identically 0 in the order (MZ/MH)^2, which is due to gauge invariance. Left with an amplitude of the order (MZ/MH)^4 the final result is that the scalar contribution to this decay rate is several orders of magnitude smaller than those of the W boson and fermions.Comment: 6 pages, plain Tex, 1 figure available under request via fax or mail, OCIP/C-93-5, UQAM-PHE-93/0
