Sulphur content of Tennessee soils
The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine the sulfur content of representative Tennessee soils, (2) to correlate the total sulfur content with the organic matter content, and (3) to predict the possibility of a sulfur shortage in some areas of the state
Spectroscopy and multivariate analyses applications related to solid rocket nozzle bondline
Chemical composition and molecular orientation define the properties of materials. Information related to chemical composition and molecular configuration is obtained by various forms of spectroscopy. Software algorithms developed for multivariate analyses, expert systems, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are used to conduct repetitive operations. The techniques are believed to be of particular significance toward achieving TQM objectives. The objective was to obtain information related to the quality of the bondline in the solid rocket motor, SRM, nozzle. Hysol 934 NA, a room temperature curing epoxide resin, is used as the bonding agent. A good bond requires that the adhesive be placed on a properly prepared metal surface, the adhesives Part A and B be mixed in appropriate ratio from material within shelf life specifications. Spectroscopic data was obtained for surfaces prepared according to specifications, contaminated metal surfaces, samples of the epoxide adhesive at times that represent shelf aging from 3 months to 2 years, several mix ratio of A to B, and curing material. Temperature was found to be a significant factor. The study concentrated on pot life and mix ratio
Real-time quality assurance testing using photonic techniques: Application to iodine water system
A feasibility study of the use of inspection systems incorporating photonic sensors and multivariate analyses to provide an instrumentation system that in real-time assures quality and that the system in control has been conducted. A system is in control when the near future of the product quality is predictable. Off-line chemical analyses can be used for a chemical process when slow kinetics allows time to take a sample to the laboratory and the system provides a recovery mechanism that returns the system to statistical control without intervention of the operator. The objective for this study has been the implementation of do-it-right-the-first-time and just-in-time philosophies. The Environment Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) water reclamation system that adds iodine for biocidal control is an ideal candidate for the study and implementation of do-it-right-the-first-time technologies
The Relationship between Enrollment in Service Learning Courses and Deep Approaches to Learning: A Campus Study
Utilizing 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) data for both
freshmen and senior students on a college campus, this study isolates the influence of
participation in service learning courses on freshmen and senior students’ application
of deep approaches to learning. Deep learning, as compared to surface learning,
describes the extent to which a student engages in the learning process. Students
who use deep learning strategies make more robust connections to course material
by emphasizing learning activities such as integration, synthesis, and reflection. By
making deeper connections, students focus on both the substance and the underlying
meaning of their studies. Students learn to apply the knowledge gained to real
life situations and successfully integrate this with prior learning. Multiple linear
regression results for both freshmen and senior students suggest that students’ use
of deep approaches to learning increased as their participation in service learning
courses increased, adjusting for student characteristics and participation in other
high impact practices. These findings provide a rationale for institutions to support
faculty who engage with their community partners to develop service learning
courses. For faculty who teach service learning courses, these findings support the
value, from an institutional perspective, of the work that they do
The Relationship between Service Learning and Deep Learning
This research investigated the relationship between college students’ participation in service learning courses and their reported use of deep learning skills. An analysis of 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement data for freshmen and seniors at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis found that reported deep learning skills of higher order learning, integrative learning, and reflective learning were all higher for both freshmen and seniors who participated in service learning courses, with integrative learning skills having the greatest gain. These results contribute evidence that service learning should be valued to the extent that it contributes to student learning at the course level as well as at the institutional level and provide a rationale for institutions to support faculty who engage with the community partners to develop service learning courses

Examining Opioid Risk Mitigation Practices in a Rural Pain Management Clinic: A Quality Improvement Project
Opioid misuse and opioid use disorder rates have led to record opioid-related deaths nationally. Virginia public health officials declared a public health emergency due to the opioid crisis. Provider prescribing practices are part of this complex local and national public health problem. Evidence indicates that prescribers should assess for risks related to substance misuse and abuse in high-risk populations, such as patients on long-term opioid therapy. By evaluating risk level, the provider has additional information to guide treatment decisions and a baseline for assessing future changes in risk status. This project used quality improvement methods to study the implementation of an opioid risk screening tool in a rural pain management clinic. Addiction screening was implemented in two iterative Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles, aiming to screen 80% of eligible patients by Cycle 2. Participants completed an anonymous paper version of the Opioid Risk Tool-Opioid Use Disorder (ORT-OUD) as part of their intake assessment paperwork. The number of patients seen, the number and percent of eligible patients, screened patients, and the risk level for each screened patient was calculated. The project implemented the ORT-OUD screening with 78 patients, three of which completed the screening with nurse assistance. Thus, 100% of eligible patients were screened, meeting the screening goal. The screening identified 16 patients (21%) as high-risk. Opioid risk screening can provide valuable information when assessing and treating patients receiving long-term opioid therapy for chronic non-malignant pain. This project successfully implemented an opioid risk screening protocol using an interdisciplinary team approach
Higher order topological actions
In classical mechanics, an action is defined only modulo additive terms which
do not modify the equations of motion; in certain cases, these terms are
topological quantities. We construct an infinite sequence of higher order
topological actions and argue that they play a role in quantum mechanics, and
hence can be accessed experimentally.Comment: 7 page
