Computer programming, system development and analysis efforts during this contract were carried out in support of the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) at NASA/Langley. Optimal measurement precision of a nonlinear interferometer

We study the best attainable measurement precision when a double-well trap with bosons inside acts as an interferometer to measure the energy difference of the atoms on the two sides of the trap. We introduce time independent perturbation theory as the main tool in both analytical arguments and numerical computations. Nonlinearity from atom-atom interactions will not indirectly allow the interferometer to beat the Heisenberg limit, but in many regimes of the operation the Heisenberg limit scaling of measurement precision is preserved in spite of added tunneling of the atoms and atom-atom interactions, often even with the optimal prefactor.Comment: very close to published versio

The Function of the Director of Christian Education in Relation to Management of Personnel

During the past few years, the writer has become interested in the field of Christian Education. It has been observed that far too often, there are pastors and church leaders frustrated because of an inability to present the message of the Gospel effectively. It has been the conviction of this writer as he has worked with personnel as a floor manager in a department store, and later as a pastor in a small church, that any measure of human success comes as a result of working through individuals. Taxonomic review of the North American dung beetle genus\u3ci\u3e Boreocanthon\u3c/i\u3e Halffter, 1958 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Deltochilini)

This paper presents a taxonomic review of the genus Boreocanthon Halffter, restored generic sta­tus, a group of ball-rolling (telocoprid) dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) endemic to North America. The genus, heretofore treated as a subgenus of Canthon, comprises 13 species, each keyed, diagnosed, illustrated and presented with information on distribution, relationships, and biology (*signifies restored generic combination): *Boreocanthon ateuchiceps (Bates, 1887); B. coahuilensis (Howden, 1966); *B. depressipennis (LeConte, 1859c); *B. ebenus (Say, 1823); *B. forreri (Bates, 1887); *B. integricollis (Schaef­fer, 1915); *B. lecontei (Harold, 1868); *B. melanus (Robinson, 1948); *B. praticola (LeConte, 1868); *B. probus (Germar, 1823); *B. puncticollis (LeConte, 1866); *B. simplex (LeConte, 1857); as well as Boreocanthon halff­teri Edmonds here described as a new species. Other actions taken are a) Canthon mixtus Robinson declared junior subjective new synonym of Boreocanthon puncticollis; b) Canthon bisignatus Balthasar, 1939, declared junior subjective new synonym of Boreocanthon simplex; c) Boreocanthon coahuilensis (Howden) new ge­neric combination; and d) neotype designated for the type species of the genus Boreocanthon, Ateuchus ebenus Say, 1823, here Boreocanthon ebenus (Say)

America Inc.: The Rise and Fall of a Civil Democracy

The field of Curriculum Studies has thoroughly outlined the detrimental effects of corporate ideology on education in terms of curricular mandates, the corporatization of higher education, rampant privatization, and globalization. Educational mandates have created an atmosphere of control in which students are methodically deprived of exploration and creativity through strict adherence to a prescribed curriculum. This results in the de-skilling of teachers and the loss of Self as students are forced to memorize facts based on educational mandates, with teachers having to constantly redirect outlets for creativity in order to teach to the test. As a result of this study, it is evident that educational mandates are the first step in preparing children to become the unknowing participants in a consumer culture. In addition to curriculum mandates, children are also controlled by a system that advocates the use of psychiatric diagnoses and subsequent medication as a means to suppress disruptive forms of behavior that are deemed to be abnormal, such as a child\u27s propensity to play and normal forms of adolescent rebellion. I propose that a culture of defiance is rising out of the attempts to suppress normal behavior as children and adolescents rebel against the system. I also propose that the Self is methodically detached from its creative core and that Object-Relations Theory plays an integral role in understanding the behavior of postmodern consumers

William Taylor Muse- The Dean

It is hard to discuss William Taylor Muse, or The Dean as he was known to most of us, without using superlatives in what would appear to the uninitiated a super abundance. William T. Muse was many things-a devoted husband and father, an ardent Baptist, an enthusiastic and constant fan of athletics at the University of Richmond, a recognized scholar and legal author, a teacher of law for forty years, secre- tary and president of the Virginia State Bar Association, and a Sunday School teacher for most of his adult life. To most of us, he was pri- marily two things, The Dean and our friend. In these two capacities, his personality meshed. He was the Law School to most of us. That is not to say that the Law School, or our affections for it, disappeared with him. He visualized and epitomized the T. C. Williams School of Law as a vital and continuing institution. It does and will continue, as does our affection for him

A Synopsis of the Major Revisions to Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code Adopted By Virginia

When the Uniform Commercial Code became effective in Mississippi and South Carolina on January 1, 1968, it reached its goal of near uniform enactment. Maintaining this achievement of uniform adoption, however, has proven to be most difficult with regard to the Code\u27s treatment of secured transactions in Article 9. In 1966, the Permanent Editorial Board 2 noted that there had been 337 non-uniform, non-official amendments to Article 9 of the Code. Accordingly, the Board established a Review Committee to restudy Article 9 in depth and report its findings. The study culminated in the Final Report of the Permanent Editorial Board of April 25, 1971
